The Paper Workshop

Recently I attended a Paper Workshop, it gave me few ideas about creating a book, or how to present a body of work on paper. Our tutor showed us some folding techniques with some samples and we had a touch and look at many different papers and other materials on which we could do digital printing.

As I’m going to print some visual images for my project I wanted to choose the paper carefully to fit well together with whole body of work. The paper which I’m going to use for the first trial is: 

-printing paper, off-white, recycled 80 gsm

- sugar paper

-tracing paper

-acetate sheets

-blue recycled paper

Productive Day

Yesterday was quite productive day. After tutorial I decided to focus on the box with stuff of Miss P. Jones: letters, photographs, invitations, postcards, correspondence and documents. Miss P Jones was working for the British Army in various places across the world. Time on documents and photographs is between 1940-1967.   When I saw the box on my local junk market, I roughly went through it and the content of the box seems like someone’s life ... I had a feeling I shall get this box and have a closer look at it at home. So, there we are that raw material will be now digested through my brain, rearranged in some sort of narrative story or maybe not, and then expose to the public through some kind of form which I cannot name it yet using the technology and simple tools..... After tutorial I visit Simon at his office where he keeps his collection of books. Very interesting place, a man’s cave where he keeps his treasures :). We had a conversation about my project and Simon suggested some photo books as  ideas. I particularly liked one project The Image as Question: An Exploration of Evidential Photography. It was a catalog from the exhibition.

 The form of this project was mixed media such as text, photographs, diagrams etc. Whole documents were kept in file. You could easily take each document out. I liked the idea of different paper use, and the way how documents were kept, but I wasn’t sure about the form of file as criminal evidence. Miss P. Jones box was more about her photographs, correspondence, articles and postcards. I left Simon’s room inspired, with wonder about different types of paper forms. My next thing on that day was Paper Workshop, lucky me! I learnt about all sort of different papers and different techniques of folding. It gave me better visual shape of my project! Now I need some time to rethink all about why, how, when, where and what I want to create…..
