Tobias knew he had an easy life and that no matter how far he tried to escape his birthright, it would always be something he could fall back on if he were ever in need, but he didn’t want it and had so much love and pride for the life he’d built for himself. It had been nine years since he last took anything from his father and he never regretted it. Sitting with Piet across from him, it felt like something was stirring in him. Confirming every choice he’d made with an added excitement that grew more with every word the older man said. He was fascinated by him, completely enthralled and so fast and dove right into that feeling.
I was curious about you rings through Tobias head, a bashful but delighted smile grows easily on his face. “You read me correctly. I don’t care for the fame or the fortune of all that, just the experience. I think that’s why this life feels so natural to me.” Not a groundbreaking insight since he knew many sailors felt the same way but it was his to feel too and he did. “You’re observant, I am too. You sent away your friends to talk to me. Maybe I’m not the only one so attached.” Something catches in his chest, not a flutter but something feels like it stops in him and gives a jolt at the assumption of an invite. Just the two of them. It could have been anywhere, and he’d agree without any pause. “I know it too. We spend a lot of time in the Grecian ports, but I’ve never made time for myself outside of work when we dock.” Tobias eyes are full of suggestion, his smile almost wickedly flirtatious but there’s something there. He felt it. It was so strong, and he thought it couldn’t just be him. “I’ll meet you as soon as we dock and you can take me to this lake if its just us.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
IT LOOKED AS IF SO MUCH WAS RUNNING THROUGH THAT PRETTY LITTLE HEAD SAT IN FRONT OF HIM. Thoughts looked as if they were running across the face in quick succession that made Piet even more intrigued. There’d been much more interesting men met before and ones with a face of a striking disposition stronger than Tobias but there was something about him or between them that was not being ignored. It felt as if it couldn’t be. Piet was never a man of one religion nor did he care for any in particular but he never ignored signs from any deity or higher being and something about the gravity of the storm, how easily they were saved when all hope seemed lost and the surge between he and the presumed noble was not one he wanted to let go of.
“You have to be observant to survive this life and its uncertainties,” its spoken colder than intended so he carries on. “I mean to say there are things you do to survive and observing surroundings is how I’ve always done it but I was curious about you and your quarters showed a glimpse of who you are. You talk of these heroes but do not seem like a man who wants glory for himself and that makes me think your affiniteit is for the relationship and the journey, not the end goal.” Tobias wore his wants and his emotions plain for all to see and if Piet had only good intentions, he would admire it but instead saw it as a way to play the man to get what he wanted out of him. “We’ve known each other one night and you’re so attached to me with one brief conversation.” Not a question. A statement matched with a beaming look on his face and soft eyes filled with longing that left no room for question. “Piraeus is a city I know well. There’s a lake a few hours ride from there I can show you. It’s quiet of a night but under the moon its quite a sight.” An invention given between the lines.

Margarete Steiff was born in 1847, but fell ill with polio as a small child. She had to drive in a wheelchair all her life and could only move her right arm with a lot of pain. But she had a lot of courage, went to school and later learned to sew. In 1879 she began to sew and sell small fabric elephants. That's how the business started.
Her favorite nephew Richard worked in the company and he made the first soft bear in the world with movable arms and legs. The bear wins first prize at the world exhibition 1904 in St. Louis. Teddy Roosevelt is president in the USA and from 1906 this bear was called "Teddy bear". As a trademark he gets the little "button in the ear" with a picture of Margaret's elephant on it.
The Steiff animals were and remain of the highest quality. Margarete's slogan has always been "Only the best is good enough for children." Today there are not only Steiff animals as cuddly toys, but also special collecting animals (like the Munich bear with the certificate above) and even a "Steiff Club."

Gerhard Schoene was born in Dresden in 1952 (then part of the GDR). He grew up with five siblings in a Protestant pastor's family. In his childhood, music and literature were very important at home, and Schöne became particularly known for his children's songs. Some of his songs were also critical of the GDR, and he was an active supporter (proponent) of the turn in 1989/90. Nevertheless, he received the GDR National Prize in 1989 as the most successful songwriter. Schöne is still successful today with new CDs and concerts.
On October 6, 1683, 13 German families came to Pennsylvania. In 1983, to commemorate 300 years of German immigration, President Reagan declared October 6 as German-American Day. One in four Americans today has German roots, and you can see family names that are of German origin all over the country. German-Americans have had a great influence on America, especially in politics, science, technology, education, music, etc.

You'll be learning more about it and its variations Doppelkopf and Schafkopf in the next Websuche. UNO and Mau-Mau are similar: in both games the goal is to get rid of your cards, and certain cards have special powers. Jass is the "Swiss National Cardgame," also not unlike Skat. However, it is played with the "altdeutsche Karten" that have the four suits of bells, shields, flowers, and acorns:

They’d only known each other barely a night and already he felt like it had been so much longer. It could be because of the intensity of the storm, because he’d saved the others life or it could be that there was something between them. That’s what he hoped for. For whatever reason, there was something there and he’d felt it the instant he’d spotted him in the sea that was only heightened when they fell on each other on deck. He’d tried the bold flirting without any hesitation only to be read so completely for what was under it. It happened faster than it had with anyone and so easily as if they had known each other before. Normally that would unnerve him or set him on edge but this time, it sent something threw him that excited him deep down and throughout his body. Despite the busyness of the ship, it was as if it were just the two of them and their conversation existing outside of everything going on. With so little known about Piet, Tobias was fascinated already and hoped it was the same in return.
He's about to flirt again but instead stops short as he hears the words carry on from the mans mouth. “You’re observant, aren’t you?” he smiles bashfully, taking the clear interest in him and his habits from Piet as a sign of something. “I’ve always loved Greek stories. Achilles and Patroclus, the battle of Troy and of course Odysseus and his journey home. Who wouldn’t love that? I read them as a boy and I think my desire for travel took root from them.” He’d never said that to anyone but it felt natural to spill it for Piet’s ears so early on in their hopeful friendship. Sighing, his tired mind tries to recall their journey. “We found you about a month and a half into our journey to Piraeus, so we have about a week or so left if the winds are kind. Are you so eager to leave me,” he stops, embarrassed and tries to make a quick recovery. “Us, behind?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A HEALTHY EGO COULD BE USED AS A VIRTUE FOR MOST MEN HOWEVER IT WAS OFTEN FOUND THAT THEY LET IT GROW TOO BIG AND THAT WOULD FAST MAKE IT A DETRIMENT TO THEM. Piet knew he did not share the rough look of a sailor, knew that he was decent to look at for many and a strong physique from over forty years of work helped, however, it was not something he thought of about himself. Instead looked to something of substance over vanity. That did not stop him looking at the beauty around him of the world or the on the people encountered.
Eyes narrow at the younger man Piet presumed to be noble, inspecting him as he sits down and a judgement etched in them too. “The shallow pretence does well for you, I can tell. Assuming no other sailor here has shared your bed, they didn’t see the books by your bed, but I did. Readings from Aristotle, Homer and Plato. An interest in Greek stories it looks like and not something a shallow mind would care to keep or read over and over judging by their spines.” The mention of the losses under his command breaks the narrowed eyes into a softened look. “Bedankt. Thank you. The losses are something I’ll carry with me.” The reality was Piet did not care as long as he lived. What he did mourn was the treasure on board. “When will reach the nearest port and more importantly, where?”

Heavy rain beat down on them and win whipped violently against faces that tried to cover against the elements with little relief. It was while he was checking the ropes on deck that had been sued to secure that he noticed three distant figures clinging to the remains of a wreckage. In this kind of storm they’d seen plenty of wreckages and did a silent prayer for the unnamed lost souls, but this time changed and they had the chance to save. There was un unspoken agreement that any souls that could be saved should and so Tobias ran to the captain and pointed out the people.
The closer the ship got to the people, he could see them. Three men, all older than he was, battered by the storm and looking cold but holding on tight. In an organised effort, each one was hoisted up with speed. The last was the oldest. As Tobias saw him, their eyes locked and there was something about him that made him linger despite the urgency. A breathlessness caught him despite the wind, something stirred in him that he had experienced before but not of this magnitude. It was stronger and reminded him of what it was like when he saw another he had an instant attraction and connection too. Even in the wind and rain, he could see how attractive the man was and had to snap himself out his own admiring throughs as he grasped the man as tight as he could and hoisted him up on the deck. Together they fall back but are on the deck and there’s a pause between them as they finally look at each other without the danger of drowning. Still clutching him, Tobias is about to speak when the other crew get them on their feet. They try and take him to medic but Tobias follows, insisting on helping him walk and with good reason too. Not just because he wants to remain close and hear about who they are but because there was a struggle after being in the cold water for so long. “I’m Tobias,” he manages to speak. It’s soft, his gaze unable to take his eyes from the man. “You’re lucky we spotted you. Where you out there long? Where were you travelling from?” Its too much and rambling, so unlike him but he can’t help it.

Tobias spoke a few languages, some far better than others, but it Dutch wasn’t one of them and he immediately started to feel left out. It was irrational, he knew it, but the feeling couldn’t be helped. The words hit him hard, he knew that he stood out against the crowd of rough sailors even though he’d worked with them for most of his life. No matter what he did that couldn’t be stopped.
“That’s just because I’m much more handsome that the rest of them,” he laughs but its hollow sounding even with the flirty demeanour that usually sees him through. After a minute or two, he finally takes a seat and tries his best not to look at the two other rescued men looking their way. It felt as if they were intruding even though he’d not even known any of the three for a day. “I don’t think I said it before but I’m sorry for your loss. The men you lost to the sea and your ship, I don’t know that pain and I can’t imagine it would be easy for anyone to hold.”

CAPTAIN OF HIS OWN CREW ENSURES THAT THERE WAS REST OTHERWISE MOODS WOULD SOUR AND FIGHTS WERE NOT WELCOME ON HIS DECKS. Not to say that was happening on his ship but the younger man seemed to have his mood altered by the lack of sleep from the storm. Strange enough, Piet thought that fire suited him much more than the flirt. If he was noble born like Piet thought, this would be something outside of the life he was born into and maybe why the ship called to him more than the elite.
“Het is Nederlands. It’s Dutch. That’s where I’m from and our mother tongue. I’m not talking in that language to keep a secret from the crew, it is simply my natural language.” A lie. It was spoken for both those reasons but the first one being the main reason. “They are cautious of you. You stand out from the others here.”

Even though Tobias had been the very catalyst that had saved their lives, he could tell the other two men didn’t like him too much and there was a hostility about them that he didn’t understand. It wasn’t that he expected them to be grateful but he didn’t expect the sour mood from them. It would help if he knew the language spoken between them but it wasn’t one that he was even familiar with. The not knowing made his irritated mood worse.
“What are you saying in…what language is that?” He doesn’t sit but stands, lingering by as his eyes watch the glare being shot his way from the two that left. “I came over to see how you are all doing but it seems that was the wrong thing to do for your friends.” When Piet explains, a knot forms in his stomach. Of course they would be in a foul mood after all they lost. “I don’t mean to make it about myself but they’re still glaring now. Is it grief or annoyance that I’m talking with you?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WHISPERS PASS BETWEEN THE THREE MEN IN PRACTISED EASE FROM YEARS OF BEING IN THE SAME CREW AND SAVING EACH OTHERS BACK. For their own privacy, the words were spoken only in hushed tones of Piet’s mother tongue that he insisted all his crew would learn for this very reason. It was his language even if he was versed in a lot of others, it was about power to make others use the one he was born into.
“laat mij met hem praten," Instructions given in the same language he thought the other did not know. "You were but why else would you come over if not to interrupt?” With a smirk, he turns to the one that saved his life and gives a gesture for him to join them but there’s a scoff from the saved friends as they leave and mutter between them how foolish Piet was being. “Pay them no attention, the ways of the storm are still in their heads and the grief of our fallen friends heavy on all our minds.”

The excitement of the night before had faded because of all the work that needed doing to make sure their own fleet didn’t get lost in the storm. Tobais had an energy about him, a surge that went through him that kept sleep and tiredness away as he worked but as the morning hit and the work slowed, he started to feel it. Tiredness was nothing new to him after so many years of hard work but the adrenaline fading, he found himself getting irritated. It happened on rare occasions, and he knew it was because of the way the rush faded so fast, and he was left with nothing except the waiting.
His mood lifted instantly when he saw the man he’d rescued and without waiting, he goes straight over and doesn’t care if he’s about to interrupt. Then he hears the strange words and stops. Only then does he realise they must’ve been directed at him because the other two men rescued whose name he doesn’t know glance over at him in ways that he knew from his noble-born life that meant the words were about him. “Am I interrupting?” he asks lingering close but with an irritated edge.

THE STORM HAD DONE A NUMBER ON THE SHIP BUT OVERALL THE CONDITION WAS A TESTAMENT TO THE CREW THAT WORKED IT TO KEEP UP THE CONDITION SO MUCH IT LASTED PAST THE STORM THAT CLAIMED HIS OWN FLEET. Envy struck him at once and thoughts flooded of how to take the ship for his own. It was a foolish notion since Piet knew he had no power to take it. Grateful for the chance of sleep, Piet wasted no time and climbed into the bunk but eyes did not rest until they looked over the books. Not much of them but classic literature he’d never seen a sailor read before. “Van adellijke afkomst,” is whispered to himself before the pirate watches the boy leave.
The next morning he rises early and immediacy finds the ship moving smooth. The storm had passed and it was smooth sailing with everyone working hard. Eyes scanned the deck and immediately find Tobias but does not go over to him and instead opts for food when he’s called over by the friends he was rescued with. Food is shoveled into his mouth and questions form about where he was and why he was with the younger male. “Hij is van adellijke afkomst,” whispered although he doubts anyone knows the language of his mother tongue. “We can use that.”

Tobias knows the ship like it is a part of him for spending such a long time on it. Years he’d spent getting to know every inch of it and now that he did, he wore it with pride more than he did the family estate that he knew. Backing down but still with the thoughts in his head, Tobias walks the man to the crew sleeping area. It’s cramped enough with who they have but they had an honour to look after those rescued. “Mine is over there in the corner, the one with the books piled next to it. Feel free to take it and I don’t mean that as a flirtation. I’m on duty for the night until the next shift and I don’t mind.” That part is true and there’s part of him that doesn’t want the other man to be in anyone elses bed even if it just sleep. “Your friends can take the ones next to you, I’ll talk to the men they belong to. Just,” he says licking his lips with a nervous edge. “Never mind. Get your rest. I’ll be on deck in the morning to fix whatever the storm has broken. If you’re able, I could do with the extra hand.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DEFLECTION AS IT WAS, PIET KNEW THERE WAS SOME TRUTH TO THE YOUNGER MANS WORDS AS A MEMORY OF HIS OWN TATTOOING CEREMONIES CAME OVER HIM. The first was cause for celebration, the others had been done with the fanfare or fuss because, as Tobias had said, there was often too much work to be done or something happening that had it done without a big occasion. That did not mean he believed the man. Nobles from a plethora of countries had been met at a distance and all had an air about them, you could tell their birth status by their face. “If you believe that,” is all he says but matching a smug look that the other had on his face not long ago. “Down,” he grins gently pushing Tobias away but leaving his hand on the others chest just a little longer than needed. Enough to be noticed. “And show me to my quarters so I can sleep, sail-master.”

“On this ship, gaining a mark is a celebration. We make a whole time of it and it takes a lot of work, sometimes people save them up and get them all at once. I prefer to focus on showing what I can do than having the marks on my body show it off.” He’s smug again and hoping that the lie pays off or is even a little believable. “I’m not trying to stave away disappointment,” he scoffs. “I’m just trying to do my work.” Somewhat true. The idea of being marked so much that it couldn’t be hidden would do something to his father and anger him beyond consoling if Tobias were ever caught. Although, he was tempted to get another tattoo to show his rank. A point of pride and he loved the night he got it. “What one would you want to see on my skin?” Slutry spoken as he inches closer, never giving up.
He can’t help but smirk at the comment. It was working, he couldn’t deny it. “You think you know me so well. For someone who was at deaths door mere moments ago, you seem to think you know so much. Did the cold of the water sharpen your mind?” Now it was his turn to taunt. Rejection was a rarity for him but even so, this didn’t feel like one. Maybe a delay. “If you promise,” he smirks again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WHEN SOMEONE WAS TRYING TO DEFLECT THE QUESTION, IT WAS AN EASY SPOT. That is what he thought was happening with the younger man which added more suspicion on what was being hidden and why. Given the looks of him, the minimal tattoo despite a respect from the crew and with a good position of sail-master. That position revealed experience that was not showing on the ink in the others body. Ever curious. “And yet no mark to show your rank. Who are you trying not to disappoint?” Likely a family member. The sea life called to runaways, and it could easily be that the boy was one of them.
“Maybe I am trying to provoke you but I can see when it is working. That gives up more about you than you think. Hiding something gives away as much as slipping up with the truth.” The sureness of him was alluring on him. A perfect balance of cockiness and assuredness. “I know what you mean and subtly is clearly not something you are versed in. When I’m finished, show me to where myself and my friends can rest, sail-master, and let the excitement of the day fade from us. With a clear head in the morning and out of the storm we can look into your proposition.”

The mention of the tattoo on his wrist makes Tobias instinctively look down. There’s a fond look on his face thinking of the night he got it and the big celebration he had. At that point he had no siblings but it felt like a night that he had a crowd full of brothers that wanted to celebrate him for what he’d done and not what he was born into. He was so proud that night, relished it all and thought of it even now with a love that he never experienced back in his true life as an heir to an Earl. The difference could not even be described for how far away they were from another.
“You are intent at trying to provoke me,” he chuckles but there was something intimate about seeing Piet’s tattoo and a stirred feeling Tobias at the thought that they had the same tattoo. It was common in their shared line of work, but he saw it as something tying them together, some kind of fate maybe. “I started as a cabin boy at sixteen and worked up to deck as a fully-fledged sailor and now I’m the sail-master. It’s why I spotted you and saved your life,” spoken so cocky and looking for any way to remind the other that he was more than what he saw. “One could say I’m lost in the life of the sea; I love being a sailor. Right now, I live for myself. I indulge in every want and desire I wish and I make sure I have no regrets. When you’re checked over by the medic I know of a private place I can show you what I mean.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
IT WAS CLEAR FROM THE SMILE THAT REMAINED ON THE YOUNGER PERSONS FACE THAT IT WAS A TOOL USED TO GET OUT OF THINGS. Something that could have evaded situations that would have been a detriment to any situation he was misfortunate enough to be in, by design or by mistake. Looks were important in any area of life and was one of the many reasons Piet did not look like the pirate he was aside from the carefully placed tattoos that would reveal his nautical ways but even they could be described away as simply being that of a sailor.
The respect given to the crew instead of selling them out told a lot. Not a surprise because the trust was there between every shipmate and seen to work in perfect harmony even in dangerous situations that they had rescued him from. “A deckhand judging by the rope on your wrist.” Piet’s own wrist slid from the balcony, the wet sleeve pulled up and the wrist held up close so the boy could see the same tattoo on his wrist. “Do you have more or is a man of your age limited by skill and can only get one?” If questioning the crew would not work, poking at someone’s ego could reveal more and give a crack in the secret. “My years have given me knowledge on people that you could very well discover. Have you, Tobias, not been lost in someone before? Maybe not in a romantic way. Maybe in a familial one or in your very dedication to this ship. Do you live for yourself or for expectations placed on you?”

Growing up how he did, so scrutinised and inspected from family, friends families and others who he didn’t even know made it easy to spot when it was happening again and sometimes even the intention behind it. He wasn’t the fool people assumed of him because of his handsome face; he was much more aware of what went on around him than people thought. So he spotted the look and stiffened up, not backing down from it but glad to catch the hand gesture of the one he spoke with that seemed to dismiss them. It was subtle, might not even have been anything but he wanted to think it did.
The question caught Tobias off guard, how easy the man saw him and his past that he had worked hard to be rid of. Instead of giving a direct answer he gives a charming, easy, smile. “This ship is under tight control; we have a love and respect for each other but I’m a low rank. My conviction isn’t learned, it’s just who I am.” Challenging slightly in his voice. While he wanted to defend his ship and the other crew members, he knew to be cautious. It wasn’t that he wanted to keep his past a secret, it was just that there was a judgment to being a noble heir, people thought you privileged and not the hardworking man he’d earned in the years he’d been working on the ship. “You think so little of the man that saved your life to think I’d get lost in another person. Now who is the bold one?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THERE’S A NOISE AND THE PIRATES GAZE IS STRIPPED AWAY FROM THE YOUNGER MAN BEFORE HIM TO SEE THE TWO RESCUED FRIENDS GIVING A CAUTIOUS LOOK. There’s a warning in it that only they knew how to read but with a hidden gesture of the hand they understand that he is getting information and back down, allowing space between himself and Tobias. The boy was eager to please, the curious nature of him a fault that left his intentions and desire open to be examined and manipulated.
“I’ve met bold sailors younger and older than you, but your conviction is an entire new breed of what I am used to. Could it be from a life lived before you took to the sea or was it something learned on a out of control ship?” There had been some concerned eyes glanced their way from the captain and Piet was quick to realise there was care there. Not the romantic kind but something familial. The crew, like many others, worked together in great harmony and a way that moved as one. There was no way he thought the crew were out of control with that but they held a deep respect for one another and to poke at that would be a way to find out the truth. The quick wit showed Tobias was more than a handsome face. Piet couldn’t resist the smirk growing on his face at the retort thrown in his direction. “If the crew are worth it then I can see myself sticking around. You may have missed the destroyed vessel you rescued me from when you couldn’t stop staring at me, boy.” Straightening his back up, Piet tilts his head and doesn’t back down from the contact. “And you look as if you’d lose yourself giving in.”

Normally he was so suave and confident when it came to anyone, he was attracted to but right now he felt that he was floundering. It wasn’t like he hadn’t met men like Piet before; he had. And he’d likely bedded them and moved on but there was a hold on him already that cut through a bravado, and he felt like he was being inspected, scrutinised and evaluated. There was also intrigue that he was picking up on that worked perfectly at enticing him even more with the bluntness of the words.
“I was only clarifying just so I know how much I mean to you from before you even knew my name,” the cockiness returned to his voice matched with a small smile that he tried to hold back as much as possible if only for a performance of indifference. “If I use my favour later on, does that mean you are sticking around and not leaving us at the next port?” Thankfully, he knew that port would be a long time away with the ship trying to make up the lost days from the storm to make the next journey. If it meant he’d have the man for a little longer then he’d take it and he didn’t even hide how happy that made him. “Well…” he answers smug and moving a little closer to him. “You look as if you want to try.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THOSE YOUNGER OFTEN LED WITH BOLDNESS AND WHILE THAT WAS SOMETHING IN THAT TO BE ADMIRED, IT GAVE AWAY MUCH ABOUT THEIR PERSON THAT WOULD BE BETTER HIDDEN. Tobias was excitable, a many in his early twenties it seemed by the look of him and so easily read by personality, status and perhaps even intention. A flirt by default, someone who could have led by charm but chose the work of a deckhand. A man who wanted to make something of himself outside what could have been given.
Warmth was coming back but slowly and made his mind sharper. “You were the one that spotted us and hoisted us up, are you not? Unless there is another man responsible for that, yes. You could be my salvation.” There is bluntness to his voice that was the default of his tone but an intrigue with it too. The boy was handsome, bold. Interesting. “I am not saved by ten minutes, and you are claiming favour on my life already. Boldness becomes you but my experiences appeal you to not think so rash and use that later on because you will not have any more.” Space is created by Piet stepping back and twisting his head to see the medic working on the friends also saved with him before attention goes back to his saviour. “You speak that as if you want me to try and it would be unwise to tempt someone you have just met in such a manner.”

There was never a dull moment on the ship and barely a time for rest which he liked. It helped channel the excitable nature in him and the restless one that had made him seek out the sailor life in the first place. There was a structure that he found to channel his more impulsive ways but this…someone new and how they had found him reignited a dormant side that he had controlled away. It was almost hyper, he wanted to know everything right away about the man with an excitable hunger.
He blushes at the comment, knowing he’s a lot already, but then hearing that he was the other mans salvation intrigues him more and his eyes slowly travel up, a confident shadow of a smirk growing on him. “You think me your salvation?” spoken low, sultry almost. It was always his default to flirt and a near death experience was not going to stop that it seemed. “Then, Piet, isn’t there some rule or honourable thing about saving a life?” He wasn’t sure what and it was a poor attempt at flirtation that he couldn’t help. The touch is unexpected, but the feeling sends a shiver down his spine not from the cold air of the wind and rain but for how intimate and caring he reads the gesture as. “I’m made of stronger things; a head wound won’t break me.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DEATH HAD COME FOR HIM ON MANY OCCASIONS BUT NEVER GREETED WITH ANY SERIOUS ATTITUDE THINKING THAT THE TIME HE WOULD CEASE WOULD ALWAYS COME ANOTHER DAY. Clinging to the remains of the boat that had once been the home where life was spent and made, it was the first time that death became more than a passing thought to be bargained away. Until another vessel was seen and again Piet bid farewell to the distant reaper that would have to claim his life another day and looked at the face that found his and bought salvation to the small group clinging for life.
On the new vessel and wild eyes search the faces of those around them that with extra focus on the ones close by or with looks that stayed too long. Piet grabs the younger man with the refined face that stood out from the other, harsher looking, ones on the deck never breaking from the contact when he’s pulled up and staying with a hand clasped into the others for longer than needed after safety is all but ensured at the feeling of touching the wooden deck. Tobias stood out from the other men. Not only was face more polished, handsome in a way that exuded status but the very way words fell out of his mouth had that elegance heard only from those of noble birth. “You ask so many questions to someone barely out of the water and out of sorts,” accent was thick form the cold but the English was perfectly spoken. “I prayed for salvation but I did not think it would come so talkative with questions. How about I give you my name and rest later? Piet.” Other hands were insistent about getting him to the medic bay, but it wasn’t until they were under the swaying lamp that he noticed a wound on the younger one’s head. No hesitation is practiced and instead his hand goes to the forehead, touching it lightly but ensuring the gap between them is closed in a moment. “You should have that looked over. It would be a bad omen for my salvation to succumb to a head wound.”
