Dragon fruit nursary... #dragonfruit #patifarms Dragon fruit is an incredible cactus that produces strange looking fruit resembling a magical dragon egg. Cut through the vibrant pinky red skin to reveal white or pink flesh speckled with tiny black seeds. The taste is hard to pin down with some saying it’s a sweet mix of mild kiwi fruit, watermelon, strawberry and pear flavours. Others describe it as only vaguely sweet or even savoury. Confused? Well growing conditions and ripeness of the fruit can impact taste but nonetheless it’s visually impressive and packed full of nutrients, like Vitamin C, so you can’t go wrong. If the fruit isn’t enough to you tempt you then don’t forget the flowers. Their stunning large flowers are easily over 20cm wide and appear in summer. They are yellowy green on the outside and open to a scented white, lily like bloom. Flowers open in the evening and only last one night. It’s the perfect excuse to host an evening cocktail party and enjoy their blooms! Dragon Fruit Types The name dragon fruit is used to refer to several types of cacti that produce edible fruits. #redpitayadragonfruit Red Dragon fruits grow on long, thin, vining cactuses that are often seen growing up trees, fences or walls. On the outside, Red Dragon fruits look almost identical to the white-fleshed variety. The brightly colored oblong fruits are about 10 centimeters in length and can weigh up to a pound. They have pink to magenta-colored skin that has the appearance of succulent, fleshy scales overlapping, leaving small, green-tipped protrusions along its length. The skin is thin, with an average thickness of only 3 millimeters, so the flesh to rind ratio is high. The bright magenta flesh of the Red Dragon fruit is the result of a compound called betacyanin, which is the same pigment present in beets and prickly pear fruit. The pulp has the texture of a kiwi fruit, with small, black edible seeds throughout. फळांच्या सालीवर आणि कोवळ्या पानावर ठिपके किंवा भरपूर व्रण दिसतात. व्रण आकाराने अंडाकृती असतात. अळ्यांनी खाल्ल्यामुळे मुळांना नुकसान होते. प्रौढ भुंगे विविध तणांना तसेच केळीच्या कोवळ्या न उमललेल्या पान, फांद्या आणि मुळांना खातात. ते कोवळी फळे देखील खातात आणि सालीवर व्रण तसेच ठिपके निर्माण करतात ज्यामुळे ती विकृत आकाराची होतात आणि विक्रीयोग्य रहात नाहीत. फळाच्या बुडाजवळच सर्वात जास्त व्रण दिसतात, त्यावरुन असे लक्षात येते कि भुंगे खाण्यासाठी सर्वात चांगली निवार्‍याची (उदा. पुष्पकोषांखाली) जागा शोधतात. व्रण बहुधा आकाराने अंडाकृती असतात आणि फळांवर व्रण करणार्‍या मेलिपोना अॅमाल्थे नावाच्या मधमाशांशी गल्लत होऊ शकते. संधीसाधु जंतुंनी पेशींमध्ये घर केल्याने जास्तच नुकसान होते. अळ्या कोवळ्या मुळांवर उपद्रव करतात आणि जुन्या मुळांमध्ये बोगदे करुन आतील भाग फस्त करतात. पावसाळ्यात यांचा उपद्रव सर्वात जास्त असतो. #farmers #patilfarms #farmer #shetkari (at Patil Farms) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUPghHmsaLS/?utm_medium=tumblr
