I've always loved tradition, and the comfort of old favourites, so it's no real surprise that one of my newest favourite Chanukah books is based on one of the most beloved series from my childhood. I was so excited to see that Emily Jenkins had adapted Sydney Taylor's adored characters to a picture book for younger children in "All-Of-A-Kind Family Hanukkah" (2018), and the results, stunningly illustrated by Paul O. Zelinsky, are everything I could have hoped for. They give the most beautiful glimpse into Jewish-American family life at the turn of the 20th century in New York, with large families, poor but full of love, crammed into tenements and celebrating the holidays with noisy good cheer. A heartwarming look at Jewish history and community in a time when we could all do to recognise and embrace each other's fundamental humanity and similarities.
