Kerger also announced a “multi-year, multimillion-dollar commitment” to support the work of “underrepresented” filmmakers through the nonprofit Firelight Media and its Groundwork Regional Lab. “My goal is to build upon PBS’s strong foundation through transparency, trust, and ongoing collaboration with employees and key stakeholders across the public media system,” Loving said in a statement. Loving has been serving as a deputy commissioner and chief diversity officer for the New York City Fire Department.

While public broadcasting has a “long legacy of attempting to reflect our country and the diversity of it, I think we don’t always look as carefully in the mirror and recognize that there may be areas where we are not doing our best.”Ĭecilia Loving joined PBS on Monday as senior vice president for diversity, equity and inclusion, reporting to Kerger. Decades of Decision ( PBS ) Scheduled to begin in March, this series of five hour - long dramatic programs will focus on the issues confronting the common. “I think these are important moments to pause and to look at ourselves very carefully,” Kerger said. While the measures took into account allegations that PBS favors white male filmmaker Ken Burns (“The Civil War,” “Baseball”) and slights viewers of color, Kerger said, they emerged from a deeper reappraisal prompted by the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer in 2020. LOS ANGELES (AP) - PBS has fallen short on some aspects of diversity and is taking steps toward comprehensive change to be overseen by a new executive hired for the task, CEO and President Paula Kerger said. Will TV is like MLB TV but the the sport of Cricket – not sure how popular that will be in the U.S.?Īfter trying these new channels out over the next few days, make sure to leave a comment and let us know what you think. This is an archived article and the information in the article may be outdated. The PBS Kids channel also doesn’t require that you be a cable subscriber to work, and, as you would expect, contains learning programs aimed at small children. The AOL On channel brings a ton of videos to your Apple TV from all types of entertainment genre’s i.e., sports, tech, world news, and even AOL Originals - which contain a fair amount of “reality” based content. While Apple continues to add a select few channels, it’s by no means compares to the amount of channels available on Roku which is more than 1,300 – not counting hidden ones.Īlso, if you don’t care to use any of the new channels, you can hide the useless ones by going to Settings > Main menu and toggle them to show or hide. You won’t need to worry about updating your Apple TV to receive the new channels, just power it on and you should see them in the lineup. But don’t confuse this with WatchABC which was added several months ago – for that you will need a cable subscription. The ABC News channel will offer highlight of ACB New shows like Good Morning America, and Nightline too. Both channels will provide original programs, some live and on-demand news feeds, and live hourly updates. PBS NewsHour is a public media news organization with a nightly hour-long television broadcast and a robust digital footprint across the web and social. With the addition of the AOL and ABC news channels, you’ll have even more video content for free, but it is ad-supported.

Buck O’Neil
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
John Jordan (Buck) O'Neil (November 13, 1911 – October 6, 2006) was a first baseman and manager in the Negro American League, mostly with the Kansas City Monarchs. After his playing days, he worked as a scout, and became the first African American coach in Major League Baseball. In his later years he became a popular and renowned speaker and interview subject, helping to renew widespread interest in the Negro leagues, and played a major role in establishing the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri.
O'Neil's life was documented in Joe Posnanski's award-winning 2007 book The Soul of Baseball.
Playing career
Born in rural Carrabelle, Florida, O'Neil was initially denied the opportunity to attend high school due to racial segregation; at the time, Florida had only four high schools specifically for African Americans. However, after working a summer in a celery field with his father, O'Neil left home to live with relatives and attend Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, where he completed high school and two years of college courses. He left Florida in 1934 for several years of semi-professional "barnstorming" experiences (playing interracial exhibition games). The effort paid off, and in 1937, O'Neil signed with the Memphis Red Sox for their first year of play in the newly formed Negro American League. His contract was sold to the Monarchs the following year.
O'Neil had a career batting average of .288 between 1937 and 1950, including five .300-plus seasons at the plate, as well as five seasons in which he did not top .260. In 1946, the first baseman led the NAL with a .350 batting average and followed that in 1947 with a .305 mark in 16 games. He also posted averages of .344 in 1940 and .330 in 1949. He played in four East-West All-Star Games in three different seasons and two Negro World Series.
A World War II tour in the U.S. Navy from 1943–1945 briefly interrupted his playing career.
O'Neil was named manager of the Monarchs in 1948 after Frank Duncan's retirement, and continued to play first base as well as a regular through 1951, dropping to part-time status afterward. He managed the Monarchs for eight seasons from 1948 through 1955 during the declining years of the Negro leagues, winning two league titles and a shared title in which no playoff was held during that period. His two undisputed pennants were won in 1953 and 1955, when the league had shrunk to fewer than six teams.
Negro leagues career statistics
O'Neil was known to have played full-time in 1951 and as a reserve and pinch-hitter as late as 1955, but Negro leagues statistics for the period 1951 and after are considered extremely unreliable.
Source: Hall of Fame Committee on African-American Baseball, 2006
Off the field
When Tom Baird sold the Monarchs at the end of the 1955 season, O'Neil resigned as manager and became a scout for the Chicago Cubs. He was the first African American scout in Major League Baseball, and was named the first black coach in the major leagues by the Cubs in 1962 and is credited for signing Hall of Fame player Lou Brock to his first contract. O'Neil is sometimes incorrectly credited with also having signed Hall of Famer Ernie Banks to his first contract; Banks was originally scouted and signed to the Monarchs by Cool Papa Bell, then manager of the Monarchs' barnstorming B team in 1949. Banks played briefly for the Monarchs in 1950 and 1953, his play interrupted by Army duty. O'Neil was Banks' manager during those stints, and Banks was signed to play for the Cubs more than two years before O'Neil joined them as a scout.
After many years with the Cubs, O'Neil became a Kansas City Royals scout in 1988, and was named "Midwest Scout of the Year" in 1998.
O'Neil gained national prominence with his compelling descriptions of the Negro leagues as part of Ken Burns' 1994 PBS documentary on baseball. Afterwards, he became the subject of countless national interviews, including appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman and The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder.
In 1990, O'Neil led the effort to establish the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM) in Kansas City, and served as its honorary board chairman until his death.
In 1996, O'Neil became the recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree from the University of Missouri – Kansas City in Kansas City, Missouri.
In February 2002, at the end of the NLBM's Legacy Awards annual banquet, O'Neil received an induction ring from the baseball scouts Hall of Fame in St. Louis.
O'Neil and all-star Ichiro Suzuki developed a relationship, with Ichiro attending the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum with O'Neil and seeking O'Neil's knowledge of the game when the Seattle Mariners would have road games in Kansas City. "With Buck, I felt something big. The way he carried himself, you can see and tell and feel he loved this game."
A busy final year
On May 13, 2006, he received an honorary doctorate in education from Missouri Western State University where he also gave the commencement speech.
O'Neil was a member of the 18-member Baseball Hall of Fame Veterans Committee from 1981 to 2000 and played an important role in the induction of six Negro league players from 1995 to 2001 during the time the Hall had a policy of inducting one Negro leaguer per year. O'Neil was nominated to a special Hall ballot for Negro league players, managers, and executives in 2006, but received fewer than the necessary nine votes (out of twelve) to gain admission; however, 17 other Negro league figures were selected.
God's been good to me. They didn't think Buck was good enough to be in the Hall of Fame. That's the way they thought about it and that's the way it is, so we're going to live with that. Now, if I'm a Hall of Famer for you, that's all right with me. Just keep loving old Buck. Don't weep for Buck. No, man, be happy, be thankful.
On July 29, 2006, O'Neil spoke at the induction ceremony for the Negro league players at the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Still playing after all these years
Just before the Hall of Fame ceremonies, O'Neil signed a contract with the Kansas City T-Bones on July 17 to allow him to play in the Northern League All-Star Game. Before the game, O'Neil was "traded" to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and was listed as the starting shortstop, although after drawing an intentional walk, he was replaced before actually playing in the field. At the end of the inning, another "trade" was announced that brought O'Neil back to the Kansas City team, allowing him to lead off the bottom of the inning as well (drawing another intentional walk).
The T-Bones originally claimed that O'Neil, at age 94 years, 8 months, and 5 days, would be by far the oldest person to appear in a professional baseball game (surpassing 83-year-old Jim Eriotes who had struck out in another Northern League game just a week earlier). However, that claim was in error, as the Schaumburg Flyers of the Northern League had signed Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe to a one-game contract and allowed him to face one batter on June 19, 1999 when he was 96 years old. While O'Neil was the second-oldest pro player, the claim was amended that he would be the oldest person to make a plate appearance in a professional baseball game.
The Kansas City T-Bones retired his number on May 26, 2006.
Death and legacy
On August 5, 2006, O'Neil was admitted to a Kansas City hospital after complaining that he didn't feel well. He was admitted for fatigue and was released three days later only to be re-admitted September 17. On September 28, Kansas City media reported that O'Neil's condition had worsened. On October 6, O'Neil died at the age of 94 of heart failure and bone marrow cancer.
During the ESPN opening day broadcast of the 2007 Kansas City Royals, on April 2, 2007, Joe Morgan announced that the Royals would honor O'Neil by placing a fan in the Buck O'Neil Legacy Seat in Kauffman Stadium each game who best exemplifies O'Neil's spirit. The seat itself has been replaced by a red seat amidst the all-blue seats behind home plate in Section 101, Row C, Seat 1. Due to the renovations and section renumbering in 2009 the seat number is now Section 127, Row C, Seat 9, and the seat bottom is now padded. The first person to sit in "Buck's seat" was Buck O'Neil's brother, Warren.
Presidential Medal of Freedom
On December 7, 2006, O'Neil was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush; the award was given to his brother, Warren, on his behalf on December 15. He was chosen due to his "excellence and determination both on and off the baseball field", according to the White House news release. He joins such sports notables as Jesse Owens, Muhammad Ali, Jackie Robinson, and Jack Nicklaus in receiving the United States' highest civilian honor. On November 13, 2012 the family of Buck O'Neil donated his Presidential Medal of Freedom to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in honor of what would have been O'Neil's 101st birthday. The medal will be showcased in a special area of the NLBM dedicated to O'Neil.
Beacon of Life Award
On March 31, 2007—the day of Major League Baseball's first annual Civil Rights Game—O'Neil was posthumously awarded MLB's first annual Beacon of Life Award at the inaugural MLB Beacon Awards luncheon.
Lifetime Achievement Award
On October 24, 2007, O'Neil was posthumously given a Lifetime Achievement Award named after him. He had fallen short in the Hall of Fame vote in 2006; however, he was honored in 2007 with a new award given by the Hall of Fame, to be named after him. A statue of O'Neil is to be placed inside the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum on 18th and Vine in Kansas City, and the Buck O'Neil Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented no more than every three years.
At the Hall of Fame induction ceremony on July 27, 2008, Joe Morgan gave a dedication speech for the award and talked about O'Neil's life, repeatedly citing the title of O'Neil's autobiography, I Was Right on Time.
Other honors

"John Jordan 'Buck' O'Neil" exhibit (in the Ted Williams Museum and Hitters Hall of Fame)
Hall of Famous Missourians: In February 2012 O'Neil was inducted to the Hall, located in the Missouri state capitol building in Jefferson City. A bronze bust of O'Neil will be on permanent display by the sculptor E. Spencer Schubert.

With baseball season starting, AT&T TV is the only streaming choice for many fans.
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/with-baseball-season-starting-att-tv-is-the-only-streaming-choice-for-many-fans-3/
With baseball season starting, AT&T TV is the only streaming choice for many fans.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sarah Tew/CNET
Change is the norm when it comes to live TV streaming services, but AT&T TV has had a particularly tumultuous history. It started life as DirecTV Now in 2016, and in the time since it has added and dropped channels, changed its name twice and hiked prices numerous times. The latest iteration no longer requires a contract or a set-top box — yay! — making it similar at first blush to competitors like YouTube TV and Hulu Plus Live TV. The downside is the high price: A monthly subscription starts at $70 and to get access to your local regional sports networks (RSNs) you’ll need to pay for the $85 package.
Like
$85 plan has robust regional sports channels for NBA and MLB games.
Fun channel-surfing capabilities.
Don’t Like
Expensive, especially with sports and DVR add-ons.
$70 plan has fewer channels for more money than YouTube TV.
Roku app doesn’t work as well as Apple TV’s or web.
Tumblr media
Now playing: Watch this: Live TV streaming services for cord cutters: How to choose…
2:44
Those local channels, which carry the regular season games of NBA basketball and MLB baseball teams, are the best reason to subscribe to AT&T TV. No competitor has nearly as many RSNs, so for fans who want to catch all the action of their team live, paying $85 per month to AT&T TV is often the only streaming option. (As a bonus, that price also includes a year of HBO Max and NBA League Pass Premium.) A cable TV subscription, which typically also offers RSNs, is likely cheaper, however.
Read more: MLB 2021 streaming: How to watch the Dodgers, Mets, Yankees and more baseball without cable
Using the AT&T app feels more cablelike than any of its competitors, with a unique swiping channel-change mechanic. The service is best appreciated on an Apple TV because even though Roku is our favorite streaming device, its app lacks the ability to pause live TV. If you crave a familiar interface and want access to its extensive sports coverage AT&T TV is worth a look, but if you don’t need those RSNs, then YouTube TV, which costs less and has more non-sports channels, is a better choice.
Optional contract, multiple channel packages
One of the benefits of choosing a live TV streaming service over cable is that you’re not tied to a contract. AT&T TV does offer an optional two-year contract, but it’s not a very good deal.
Off-contract, the basic package starts at $70 a month with 65-plus channels and a 20-hour DVR but it does miss channels such as MLB Network, NFL Network and Travel Channel. For cord-cutters who want to follow their local NBA or MLB team, AT&T TV’s $85 Choice package is a better option, with access to those regional sports networks. The Ultimate tier costs $95 with more channels including Starz and Encore, while the “whole enchilada” $140 Premier level adds even more channels with HBO (and HBO Max), Starz, Showtime and Cinemax.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The AT&T TV Stream set-top box is free if you get a contract, but you can also use devices like Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV.
Sarah Tew/CNET
Opting for the contract gives you an AT&T TV Stream set-top box, an unlimited cloud DVR (normally $10 per month extra) and a discount on the first year — with a steep price increase in year 2.
With a contract, the basic Entertainment package’s first-year price is $60 per month, which then jumps to $93 per month in the second. The Choice package drops from $85 per month to $65 per month for the first year of the two-year contract, but the second year would jack the price back up to $110 per month. Those with Choice on a two-year contract would also be on the hook for paying an additional $8.49 per month as a “regional sports fee” for two years. Month-to-month Choice subscribers don’t have to pay the regional sports fee.
Those second-year price hikes make the overall cost of both packages higher than simply going month-to-month for two years, so we don’t recommend getting a contract.

AT&T recently upped the number of concurrent in-home streams to 20, which is good news to households with lots of people who want to watch at once. The out-of-home concurrent streaming limit is three, which should still be plenty.
What’s it like to use?
AT&T bought DirecTV in 2015, and that service’s history still informs the functionality of AT&T TV. Our favorite cablelike feature is the ability to swipe left or right to change channels, even if it’s not quite instantaneous. There’s about three to five seconds of loading time when changing channels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
AT&T TV comes with a program guide
Sarah Tew/CNET
When using AT&T TV with a remote, the controls center around the direction buttons and Enter/OK. This makes it relatively quick to pick up and use, and also means you don’t need a complicated remote control to make it work, making the minimalist Apple TV clicker a great companion. If you want the full “surfing” experience on a universal remote, you could even program left and right arrows into your Channel up/down buttons.
The service loads straight into the last channel watched — further enhancing its cable credentials — and pressing down brings up the interface with a choice of the 14-day guide, Watch Now, My Library recordings and a Discover option. Navigation is intuitive and quick, something that the painfully slow YouTube TV is not.
While Roku is very similar to Apple TV, there is one major difference: There’s still no live TV pause on Roku. This is also potentially frustrating to sports fans who need to pause the action momentarily. Instead, pressing pause freezes the screen while the program keeps playing in the background. Meanwhile Apple TV will allow two minutes until it cuts to the live feed and pauses again, and will keep skipping forward and pausing each minute or two until you press Play. In comparison, YouTube TV lets you pause indefinitely, just like a normal DVR.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sarah Tew/CNET
Depending on the tier you choose, AT&T TV’s DVR offers between 20 and an unlimited number of hours, while YouTube TV offers unlimited storage by default. YouTube TV lets you keep recordings for up to 9 months, while you are limited to 30 days on AT&T TV. If you live in a small to medium-size household, the service offers three simultaneous streams without the need to pay extra.
Some programs do give you the option to restart, and pressing down on the Apple TV remote will bring up show info, a recording option and Restart (if available). Pressing the Select button will pause the program. In contrast, pressing the middle button on Roku brings up a different menu with similar functionality but no pause, but there is the ability to restart.
I briefly used a Fire TV and found the experience closer to Apple TV than Roku. If you don’t have an Apple TV, the Fire TV is my next choice for using the service. Using an iPhone (an iPhone 6 Plus on AT&T, to be specific) also offered a smooth experience with quick channel changes.
Is it worth your $70 (or $85) a month?
The cable experience is what AT&T TV is all about — the swipe left and right functionality is quite inspired. While the company has really bulked up on its content since we last looked in 2019 — when it had fewer than 50 of the most popular channels — the service still lags behind every other rival in terms of breadth. The real reason to get it is if you’re an avid sports fan — the $85 Choice package with its twin draws of HBO and RSNs is unmatched by the competition.
If you want to save money though? Stay clear — almost any other service offers a better value than this, and many cable packages are comparable. Even if you’re an Apple user, other services such as YouTube TV and Hulu Plus Live TV offer a superior and cheaper experience.
Channel comparison
Below you’ll find a chart that’s a smaller version of this massive channel comparison. It contains the top 100 channels from each service. Some notes:
Yes = The channel is available on the cheapest pricing tier.
No = The channel isn’t available at all on that service.
$ = The channel is available for an extra fee, either a la carte or as part of a more expensive package or add-on.
Not every channel a service carries is listed, just the “top 100” as determined by CNET’s editors. Minor channels such as AXS TV, CNBC World, Discovery Life, GSN, POP and Universal Kids didn’t make the cut.
Regional sports networks — channels devoted to showing regular-season games of particular pro baseball, basketball and hockey teams — are not listed.

KQED, the local PBS affiliate in San Francisco, hired me on three separate occasions. Perhaps my first four month stint of lambasting pledge; mocking the union slugs; and wearing a “I Hate Public Television” button didn’t alienate enough of the self-righteous to not ask me back.
During the second stretch at KQED, Yan Can Cook, a favorite cooking show of mine, ended up as one of my management responsibilities. Martin Yan, a charming and energetic man, had still not mastered the English language. While this elevated the whimsical personality of the brand, it did cause some consternation amongst his underwriters and sponsors.
One day, after rousing the stage manager from her stupor, we shot promos for the show.
Angry Stage Manager: “Fisherman’s Wharf Consortium. Promo! On. 5, 4, 3 . . . “
Martin Yan: “And dis time of yee-ah, you can take a trip to Fishahman’s Woof, where you can enjoy fresh Dungeness CRAP! And—”
Angry Director: “Cut!”
Martin Yan: “Problem?”
Legend has it that KQED lost the Fisherman’s Woof sponsorship. In the interest of keeping the stupid racism accusations to a minimum, I won’t cover the shoot day with the guest Thai chef who came on Yan Can Cook to make something with peanut sauce.
And if Martin Yan’s questionable diction were the only issue at KQED, and by extension PBS, the very concept of public broadcasting wouldn’t be so irksome. But in addition to top-heavy management, labyrinthine union rules, and the whiny production personnel, KQED’s programming, more of it on the public dime than any stooge at MSNBC will ever admit, ran tried and true to its appeal to aging hippies, angry minorities, guilt-ridden Caucasians.
In other words, less than 50% of the potential market at best.
A typical spate of an evening’s fare, consisting of 99% national feed and 1% of the pathetic excuse for local programming, laid out, with some embellishments as follows:
6pm – 7pm – The McNeil-Lehrer News Hour(of some clone thereof) – Tonight our two Woodward and Bernstein Wannabes present the news of past week with an emphasis on sticking a thumb in the eye of traditional Americans. Our field reporters, recently returned from their internships at the Kremlin, go on location to cover obtrusive American Imperialism in the four corners of the world.
7pm – 8pm – TWIT BAY AREA – This Week In The Bay Area.A series of featurettes on the topics that interest the residents of Kooktown, USA (In fairness, KQED does refer to the city as San Francisco) and its environs. Among tonight’s topics: The concept of White Privilege will be beaten to death by a KQED producer of color who couldn’t make it in the private sector. An inside look at the local burgeoning activist community. And our weekly expose on some rich, white people who just don’t pay their fair share of taxes.
8pm – 9pm – Beverly.A documentary produced by our sister station, WGBH/Boston. It’s the story of a young hermaphroditic transsexual who always felt, deep down inside, that they were a little ‘different.’
9pm – 10pm – Enrico.A documentary produced by our sister station, WGBH/Boston. It’s the story of a young hermaphroditic transsexual who, in addition to being an undocumented person of color, always felt, deep down inside, that they were a little ‘different.’
10pm – 11pm – Masterpiece Theater, Midsommer Murders or Agatha Christie Mysteries.
****
The beauty of KQED programming, and by extension PBS, is that you could fill out the viewing schedule in a matter of minutes for all seven days of the week. A name or title change here and there for the documentaries produced by WGBH, and a veryshort list of the topics that The MacNeil – Lehrer News Hour (Or some clone thereof) and TWIT BAY AREA dared touch and whoever had the job of scheduling at KQED had a very cushy job.
As mentioned earlier, KQED hired me twice in the early 90’s. They also brought me back in the mid-90’s for one more go at mind control assisting with The MacNeil – Lehrer News Hour, but after a third lunch with the local producer of the show did not yield the appropriate responses from Yours truly, the Che Guevara fan club, also known as Human Resources, gave up.
My last lunch with said producer went as follows:
Edward R. Murrow: “I just love Bill Clinton.”
Me: “He’s a lecherous, morally-repugnant layer of veneer. Putting him the White House was bad enough, but now that we’ve lowered the bar for entry, I think anyone can get in.”
Edward R. Murrow: “Check!”
It may have lasted longer than that, but by the time Ed Murrow stomped out of the sad excuse for a watering hole in which we dined, my membership in the Go Along to Get Along Club had been officially rescinded.
****
The sheep mentality engendered by employment within PBS aside, another aspect of working at KQED involved dealing with NABET, the labor union at the station started by the Cromwells. Given the work ethic and attitude with which the membership approached their jobs, the acronym stood for Not A Bit of Effort, Toots.
KQED’s scheduling department, with I which had to deal on an hourly basis, presented the only upside to this situation. The three main people, Jim, Jerry, and Simon must have gone home every night and beaten the dog, given the obstacles consistently put in their way. Their boss, Larry, should have been canonized during his tenure.
Requesting even an hour’s time of one of the 682 skilled laborers present at the station on a daily basis generated enough paperwork, Prilosec, and Sturm Und Drang to mount a summit meeting between superpowers.
Simon: “Scheduling. Dis is Simon.”
Me: “Simon, it’s George in unit managers. I need an hour of audio this afternoon.”
Simon: “I don’t have anybody.”
Me: “I saw a couple hundred of the NABET guys down at the Slo-Club, great name for a hang out for them by the way, having a 27 course lunch.”
Simon: “Yes, Dey on break.”
Me: “I get it. When dey back from break, can I get one of the audio guys or gals to record some V.O. in the booth at three o’clock?”
Simon: “Two.”
Me: “Okay, two o’clock, but I don’t think they’ll even be through the soup course by then.”
Simon: “No. You need two people to run audio in booth.”
Me: “First of all, I didn’t think you hadanybody. Second, that booth isn’t big enough for one person, let alone two. What are theygoing to do?”
Simon: “One to adjust microphone. Other runs tape machine.”
Me: “Are you F&$KING kidding me?”
Simon: “No. Is in NABET rules book. Section 22, para—”
Me: “What does the microphone adjuster do while the other person is running the tape machine?”
Simon: “Fills out timecards for session.”
Me: “Okay, fine.”
Simon: “Send me FAX, two copies of session script, name of actor on AFTRA contract, AFTRA contract in triplicate, radio and TV buy, and name of good place to buy miniature television set.”
Me: “What?”
Simon: “Kids want TV for car. It runs off cigarette lighter input. Very clever. I—”
I made up the part about the 27 course lunch. Might have only been 22.
****
KQED’s staff of producers, as befits the personality of a bunch of touchy-feely Marin County types, had zero interest in actually lodging consistent complaints about NABET. As such, when any of the production people complained to me in Unit Managers, I requested that a discussion with scheduling and the shop steward might be in order.
No one ever wanted to do that. In time, and long after I left, the union, the feckless producers, and their helpmates in top-heavy management cratered the station’s General Ledger and led to even less effective local programming and even fewer documentaries for which the station could claim credit. That trend continues to this day.
But by golly, trotting Bill Moyers, or some clone thereof, out to slam conservatives, and binge-running(No one binge watches PBS, except for Downton Abbey) alternative lifestyle short films, satisfies the sanctimonious and the self-proclaimed superior types.
And I ain’t talking about the viewership.
****
Can’t properly say farewell to this section without a few words on Pledge, the scourge of anything worthwhile to watch on PBS. It is the interrupter of any rhythm and appreciation of public television. If Pledge could be taken outside and shot, I’d be breach loading the shotgun and walking into my backyard to do it.
Pledge runs about 52 weeks out of the year, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Or, perhaps it just feels that way. During whatever air time is left, the local affiliate or national feed consists of worthwhile educational programs and family oriented fare that crosses all borders of gender, faith, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Hah!
And, as much as I’d like to post a typical Pledge Pitch, I haven’t taken nearly enough Xanax in my life to pull myself out of the pit of despair into which I would plummet. I don’t think I can bring myself to recount the dialogue from the usual tag team combination of the effeminate Castrati and the cloyingly solicitous Manhattanite doyenne trying their level best to separate us from $50 for a copy of The Mario Lanza Diet Book.
I am moving on from PBS. You should too. I realize there is a dearthof educational, activity, and alternative viewing stations out there such as The Discovery Channel, NatGeo, Hallmark,
SCI, The History Channel, Ovation, Animal Planet, NASA TV, C-SPAN (Cough), The Travel Channel, The Golf Channel, NFL Network, MLB, NHL, and the various international feeds from other countries that any basic cable package will provide.
And there’s just so darned little On-Demand and on PPV that making a $50 donation to the elites seems like a fair trade. That and the Gazillion Dollars sent to those losers every year, some of which is hoovered out of your taxes, whether anyone at the CPB will confess to it or not.
Yes, the American public should just keep falling for the “Could you really take Sesame Street away from your children.?” Or as the sanctimonious PBS Pledge hosts would put it, “Can you allow the blood-thirsty, evil Republicans to take away the only access to fine, commercial-free programming poor little children of minority parents have? Can you? To those same programs also available to the spoiled-rotten, glow-in-the-dark, pale and washed out spawn of Satan? Can you?”
And now back to the private sector.

Buck O’Neil
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
John Jordan O’Neil (November 13, 1911 – October 6, 2006) was a first baseman and manager in the Negro American League, mostly with the Kansas City Monarchs.
Buck O'Neil Run/Walk
"John Jordan 'Buck' O'Neil" exhibit (in the Ted Williams Museum and Hitters Hall of Fame)
Hall of Famous Missourians: In February 2012 O'Neil was inducted to the Hall, located in the Missouri state capitol building in Jefferson City. A bronze bust of O'Neil will be on permanent display by the sculptor E. Spencer Schubert.

For a more robust plan, the second tier costs $84.99 and has 90 channels including ESPN News and ESPNU. The Ultimate plan costs $94.99 and includes the same features as tier two but with 130 channels, including NHL Network, CBS Sports Network, and FS1. If you sign up with AT&T for one of its top plans, for the first year, HBO Max is included in the price.
What Are Sports Streaming Services?
Sports streaming services are streaming services that include live sports as a part of the package. Those that made our rating of the Best Sports Streaming Services of 2021 were vetted through our Best Live TV Streaming Services of 2021. These companies such as YouTube TV, AT&T TV, and fuboTV have access to local news networks, regional sports programming, college and professional sports, international events, or sports networks like MLB, NHL, or NFL. Philo places No. 5 in our Best Live TV Streaming ratings, but it doesn’t offer access to live sports so isn’t included on the Best Sports Streaming list. Likewise, plenty of companies in our Best Streaming Services of 2021 rating offer sports content, however, we’ve differentiated between live sports and other sports content which mainly includes sports analysis, interviews, or pay-per-view events.
ThinkWithGoogle.com says that 30% of all sports fans stream live events from tablets or smartphones. Thanks to the many benefits of streaming that’s no surprise. Choosing digital streaming over cable can provide cost savings, access to entertainment via multiple devices, on-the-go access, and free trial periods. In most cases, there’s no setup cost or installation required and the majority of these services are contract-free, so if one doesn’t fit your preferences you can try out another. Because they are app-based, it’s a simple process to cancel the service and then connect to another app that may have what you want.
To watch sporting events via live streaming you will need the following:
A reliable internet connection. Live content is not available for download, so you’ll want to make sure your connection is stable before it’s time to experience your event live. Consider one of the Best Internet Service Providers of 2021.
A streaming device. There are any number of devices available for live streaming and it comes down to the service you choose and your preference in device. Laptops, TVs, tablets, smartphones, and devices such as Roku, Apple TV, Google Chromecast, or Amazon Fire TV will allow you to connect. Even gaming consoles such as Xbox and PlayStation will work with some services.
A streaming service app. Make sure the service you choose and the device you are using are compatible. Set up your account with the streaming service provider and download its app to watch your favorite sports team live.
Compare Sports Streaming Services
Sports streaming services offer a wide variety of channels, some of which are based on your location. Where one service may provide access to one network another may not. To create a great match between your viewing preferences and your wallet you’ll have to pay attention to your habits and see which companies offer what you want for the right price. There are cost savings that occur with streaming over the internet that cable companies can’t match, but just like your cable bill can creep up with premium channels and additional services, you may not want to add on every feature or network available.
Getting the best bang for your buck can mean aligning what you’re looking for in a sports package with the ideal content for the rest of your family. Luckily, several of the services in our rating have a good balance of content for both sports and other entertainment options. A few services, like Hulu + Live TV and AT&T TV, offer on-demand, live, and sports streaming all on one platform. These plans start at $64.99 and $69.99, respectively. However, you can increase the offerings along with the price to find more options through AT&T TV. Currently, Hulu + Live TV is available in a bundle with ESPN+ and Disney+ for sports fans and those who enjoy Disney movies. Others, such as fuboTV, boast a large number of sports channels for $64.99, with add-on options including international packages, NFL RedZone, and more if your budget allows. YouTube TV includes local channels and NFL, NBA, and MLB Networks in its $64.99 base cost. It offers soccer, NFL RedZone, and FOX Soccer Plus, along with more sports packages at an additional cost. True cost savings could be yours if you keep it simple and choose Sling TV. Its Blue and Orange packages both start at $35 each. The Blue plan includes the NFL Network while the Orange plan has ESPN in the lineup. To maximize savings with options you can combine Sling’s two plans for $50 per month. Sling offers some add-on premium channels that start at $6 per month and a Sports Extra package that starts at an additional $11 per month.
What Is the Cheapest Live TV Streaming Service?
Best Sports Streaming Services Price Comparison
A monthly subscription to one of the sports streaming services in our rating will cost between $33 and $69.99 per month for the starting package. Sling TV wins the low-cost category, but keep in mind that these are starting prices. Some subscriptions come with optional add-ons and upgrades for channels in a specific language. Here’s where pricing can begin to reach cable service costs because add-ons can be as low as $5 per month or up to $10 per month depending on the package. One great aspect of streaming services is the trial period many providers offer. You can try out the sports package on the platform of your choice without being locked into a contract or being stuck with a service you don’t use very often by selecting a service’s month-to-month subscription. Where cable television might have you buy access to a set of channels and be stuck for a year, streaming allows you to tailor your service to what you actually watch with the freedom to change it on the fly.

When comparing sports streaming services along with price, it’s important to look at other features that may impact how you use the package and its overall value. Cloud DVR space is an important factor because no one can be present for every single sports event or every episode of their favorite show. You might want the ability to download content while you’re connected to Wi-Fi and then save it to watch later, in another location or at a more convenient time. The more cloud space you have and the longer you have to watch the content before it expires, the better the streaming package will serve you. Be careful to read each service’s fine print as downloaded content may expire after a certain amount of time. YouTube TV is at the top with unlimited cloud DVR storage and nine months of viewing time, with the rest of the services offering between 50 to 1,000 storage hours. Some services, such as fuboTV, offer additional space with its higher-tiered plans or add-on packages.
If you are sharing a streaming app with other members of your household, it’s convenient to have more than one live stream available. Let’s say you want to watch the big game, but not all the family agrees. You can watch the game while another family member streams something different from the same app, or even the same thing from a different device. Simultaneous streaming capabilities are helpful and give you more options for using your subscription. The same thing applies to multiple profiles. It’s a great option for households that share a service because in some cases, each member can create their own watchlist, or at the least, keep track of where they left off watching their shows. On some platforms, parental controls work within the user profiles so parents can opt to only display specific programming for their children. This provides parents with a better way to streamline the content their children can view, as opposed to a one-profile platform where all content is available for all viewers.

A Nielsen report shows that 86 out of 100 telecasts viewed live or on the same day were attributed to sporting events. With even more growth expected for live streaming in 2021, choosing the right service is important. The following tips will help you choose the right sports streaming service to meet your needs:
Take stock of which sports you like to watch.
Determine if you want to watch sports content like talk shows, interviews, and analysis or only live sporting events and games.
For national sports decide which channels you need in order to watch the sports you enjoy. NFL games air on most local broadcast affiliates of CBS, ABC, FOX, and NBC, along with ESPN. Some PGA tournaments air on those networks too. However, while NBA, MLB, and NHL may air on some national networks, you may need to use a Regional Sports Network (RSN) to see most games. You’ll need to check which streaming service offers the RSN you need.
Consider if you like to root for local teams or if you prefer free rein when it comes to choosing your events. If you like teams that are not local to your area, you may want to consider optional add-ons with the streaming service you choose. Look for options such as NFL Game Pass, NBA League, or MLB.TV. Just be aware that if you get an individual sports streaming service like the aforementioned, you may not be able to watch the game live.
For international sports such as ESPN Deportes or BEIN, determine if the streaming service includes the channel you need. Even if it isn’t included in the base price, the channel could be offered as an add-on to your monthly subscription.
Look at the total package the service offers. Check which streaming services combine your sports interests with your other interests or that of other household members. Doing so will help you maximize your dollar when it comes to finding a streaming service that can provide many types of entertainment in one place.

YouTube TV review: The most full-featured live TV streamer is no longer the best value

YouTube TV review: The most full-featured live TV streamer is no longer the best value
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sarah Tew/CNET
Ever had a cable bill jump by 30% in a single month? That’s what subscribers of YouTube TV are feeling now after a price hike from $50 to $65 taking place July 31. While the service did get some extra channels in the form of Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon, they’re not worth another $15 a month for most subscribers. YouTube TV is still the easiest live TV streaming service to use and the one with the most channels and best features, but it’s no longer our top overall choice. That honor goes to Hulu Plus Live TV, which costs $55 a month, has an excellent slate of essential channels and includes Hulu’s vast on-demand library.
Like
More channels than any competitor, including PBS
Superb cloud DVR
Excellent on-screen interface and handy search bar
If you’re the kind of cord cutter who can stomach the $65 price, however, YouTube TV could still be for you. It’s easy to use, slick and fast on a variety of TV and mobile devices. Its cloud DVR is the best in the business, with unlimited storage and pretty much all the capabilities of a hardware DVR such as TiVo. And that channel selection is top-notch, including numerous cable staples and coverage of all four local networks — ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC — in most markets nationwide. (Editors’ note: CBS and Showtime are owned by ViacomCBS, which also owns CNET.) It’s also the only multichannel streaming service with local PBS stations. In short, you might not even miss cable.
YouTube TV is more expensive than Hulu with Live TV, AT&T TV Now and Fubo TV, but better than all three if you can handle the price. For people used to the myriad channels and easy DVR of cable or satellite, it may be worth the extra expense. For cord cutters who want more savings, however, we recommend Hulu Plus Live TV for premium users and Sling TV Blue at $30 per month for people on tighter budgets.
What do you get?
YouTube TV is different from YouTube, the free video service with more than 2 billion users a month. YouTube TV offers an experience similar to cable TV, with live channels and on-demand content available on a variety of devices. It works with Apple TV, Roku, Android TV, Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV along with numerous smart TVs, phones, tablets and web browsers.
The service operates in much the same way as competitors — there’s a program guide, a DVR and dozens of channels. But what really separates YouTube TV from other premium ($50-plus a month) services such as AT&T TV Now, Hulu with Live TV and FuboTV? Let’s take a look.
Services compared
Premium services YouTube TV AT&T TV Now Hulu Plus Live TV FuboTV Base price $65 a month for 85+ channels $55 a month for 45+ channels $55 a month for 60+ channels $60 a month for 90+ channels Total number of popular (top 100) channels 75 45 59 68 ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC channels Yes Yes Yes Yes Record shows for later (cloud DVR) Yes (keep for 9 months) Yes (500 hours, keep for 30 days) Yes (50 hours, 200 hours for $10 a month) Yes (500 hours) Step-up packages with more channels No Yes No Yes Simultaneous streams per account 3 3 2 ($15 option for unlimited) 3 Fast-forward through or skip commercials with cloud DVR Yes Yes No (Yes with $15 option) Yes
YouTube TV’s channel selection is excellent, with more from our list of 100 top channels than any other competitor. That said, more channels doesn’t necessarily mean more of what you want: Some services such as FuboTV lean heavily on sports while others are more wide-ranging. It’s best to check the list at the end of this article, which compares individual channels across services, to make sure you’re getting the channels you want.
Like Hulu, YouTube TV doesn’t offer any add-on channel packages, although it does have a handful of single-channel add-ons like Showtime, Epix, HBO and HBO Max to your subscription.
What’s it like to use?
YouTube TV’s user interface is fairly simple. There are three top-level tabs broken into Library, Home and Live. Library is where your DVR content lives. Home is where both featured and live thumbnails appear. The Live tab is a familiar-looking program grid which shows currently playing and upcoming shows. You can search for content from the top of any page, which makes it relatively easy to jump straight to the content you want. You can also perform searches with a compatible voice remote or Google Assistant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can connect to YouTube to watch related clips.
Ty Pendlebury/CNET
The service’s tie-in to YouTube proper is welcome — with YouTube originals included — though it could be more tightly integrated, especially on TV devices. For example, a content page appears when you press the Go To button on a show, and a Related on YouTube item appears at the bottom. It would be helpful to have thumbnails of related interviews and trailers appear more prominently on this page without having to delve into menus.
The DVR works well and includes the ability to rewind and fast-forward freely through recordings, even ones that aren’t yet completed. The Roku interface offers a 15-second skip by default while the Apple TV’s control system is even better. You can use the touch pad to scroll through videos — and it’s glorious! It’s so much fun and thumbnails make it relatively easy to home in on the part you want.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The DVR enables you to fast-forward and rewind, while Apple TV enables you to scrub through the timeline.
Sarah Tew/CNET
In the past, when a show appeared in a network’s on-demand library, it would automatically replace the version in your cloud DVR. That means you’d lose the ability to fast-forward through commercials. YouTube TV says it got rid of that restriction in October 2018, but some CNET readers have complained that it still occurs at times. Additionally, YouTube TV’s DVR is not truly unlimited. The shows expire after nine months, but this is still a lot longer than the 30 days you get with most rivals.
YouTube TV won’t save you as much money
At $50 YouTube TV was very attractive, but as the service has added more channels it also added further costs. When you add that $65 monthly fee to the $50 you’re already paying for internet, it means you’re paying over $110 a month. Many cable TV providers will give you a TV-and-internet bundle for around the same money.
Prices vary a lot, of course, and with cable you probably have to pay rental equipment fees, taxes and other extras. And cable providers usually reserve the best bundle pricing for people who sign a contract. The same goes for new “streaming” offerings such as AT&T TV and Comcast’s Infinity Flex.
Like Hulu with Live TV, Sling TV and others, YouTube TV is contract-free, so you can cancel at any time. Streaming services also have other advantages over cable. They’re easier to watch on phones and tablets, for example. At $65 per month, however, you’ll have to be coming from a relatively expensive cable bill to realize substantial savings with YouTube TV. In the meantime, give Hulu Plus Live TV a try.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The service comes with a comprehensive program guide.
Sarah Tew/CNET
Should you get YouTube TV?
If price is no object, YouTube TV is my favorite live streaming service, but the value proposition will be tough for a lot of people. If you don’t want to be beholden to a traditional cable company — and can get a good broadband-only internet package on the cheap — it’s Hulu Plus Live TV that offers the most compelling package right now. It has an improved interface (finally) and a good mix of channels for $10 less a month. For serious cord cutters on a budget, however, Sling TV is a better bet, especially when paired with an antenna or even AirTV 2.
