Overall, we see the NUC BOX-1165G7 perform strongly in most UL workloads where single-threaded performance matters. Here, we see the 28W TDP version score 2703 and 837 correspondingly. For additional reference, the Beast Canyon NUC with the 65W TDP Tiger Lake processor scored 7117 for the multi-threaded case and 968 for the single-threaded one. Since we have started processing these benchmarks only recently, our sample set for this benchmark is limited. We present the benchmark results for the single and maximum threads case above. The workload is configured to run with different number of threads ranging from 1 to 16 (and a single entry for the maximum number of threads allowed in the system). The benchmark routine attempts to perform the simulation of birds / bird-like objects flocking together using as many advanced capabilities as offered by the processor. Since gaming workloads are often multi-threaded, it makes sense to include this testing as part of the 3DMark suite. UL recently introduced a benchmark to test the multi-threaded capabilities of the CPU in a system. The graph below presents the overall score in this workload for different system configurations. It is less demanding than Time Spy, and is optimized for integrated graphics. The Night Raid workload is a DirectX 12 benchmark test. The graphs below present both numbers for all the systems that are being compared in this review. However, the plain version targets high-performance gaming PCs with a 2560 x 1440 render resolution, while the Extreme version renders at 3840 x 2160 resolution. The Time Spy workload has two levels with different complexities. The graph below presents the overall score for the Fire Strike Extreme and Fire Strike Ultra benchmark across all the systems that are being compared. The Extreme version targets 1440p gaming requirements, while the Ultra version targets 4K gaming system, and renders at 3840 x 2160. Similar to Sky Diver, it uses DirectX 11 (feature level 11) to render frames at 1920 x 1080. The base version is meant for high-performance gaming PCs. The Fire Strike benchmark has three workloads. The graph below presents the overall score for the workload across all the systems that are being compared. The Cloud Gate workload is meant for notebooks and typical home PCs, and uses DirectX 11 (feature level 10) to render frames at 1280 x 720. The graphs below present the various Ice Storm worloads' numbers for different systems that we have evaluated. While the Extreme renders at 1920 x 1080, the other two render at 1280 x 720. All three use DirectX 11 (feature level 9) / OpenGL ES 2.0. It is a cross-platform benchmark (which means that the scores can be compared across different tablets and smartphones as well). This workload has three levels of varying complexity - the vanilla Ice Storm, Ice Storm Unlimited, and Ice Storm Extreme. In this section, we take a look at the performance of the ASRock NUC BOX-1165G7 across the different 3DMark workloads. We use 3DMark to get an idea of the graphics capabilities of the system. Correspondingly, the rendering resolutions are also different. UL's 3DMark comes with a diverse set of graphics workloads that target different Direct3D feature levels. The power plan was set to Balanced for all the PCs while processing the PCMark 10 benchmark. These scores are heavily influenced by the CPU and GPU in the system, though the RAM and storage device also play a part. We benchmarked select PCs with the PCMark 10 Extended profile and recorded the scores for various scenarios. UL's PCMark 10 evaluates computing systems for various usage scenarios (generic / essential tasks such as web browsing and starting up applications, productivity tasks such as editing spreadsheets and documents, gaming, and digital content creation). While PCMark evaluates the system as a whole, 3DMark focuses on the graphics capabilities with emphasis on gaming workloads. Design wise, it does look like Microsoft took a few cues from their tablets, and used it for the upper half here, as it does feel almost like a tablet. There are no bevels here, and the edges just falls away cleanly. The Windows logo contrasts against the rest of the finishing with a mirror shine. The lid of the Surface Laptop 4 is made of aluminum, and it gets a nice matte finish that’s just perfect to the touch.

While the mouse doesn’t come free with every Surface Laptop 4, we received a Microsoft Surface Arc Mouse along with our Surface Laptop 4 for testing. It charges via the Surface Connect port, and we will get to that in a bit. I am a bit more torn about the connector for the Surface Laptop 4 though. A faster charging rate for the USB port would have been appreciated, but this is still way more convenient than most laptops already. I really quite like this design as it means that you won’t have to bring several power adapters with you when you travel, as all you need is the Surface Laptop 4’s to charge all your devices. That’s because instead of delivering all 65W to the laptop, 5W is for the USB-A port here. In the case of the Surface Laptop 4’s charger, 60+5W does not equal to 65W. I wish it was just integrated into the user guide itself though, just to save a bit of paper. There’s even a “Caring for your Surface Laptop” guide, which is a nice reminder of sorts to help you take care of the fancy Alcantara keyboard deck. You get the usual stash of documentations, as well as a pretty nifty 60+5W power adapter. In the box, the contents are also pretty standard.

LPCAMM2 can achieve lightning-fast speeds of up to 7,500MT/s, which is 1.3 times faster than DDR5 SODIMMs, by employing LPDDR5X memory. In addition to lowering power consumption, this memory form factor increases battery life. As compared to DDR5 SODIMMs, these modules utilise up to 80% less standby power, allowing users to work longer on the road without sacrificing performance.
The 128 bits of CPU bus width are filled by a single LPCAMM2 module, optimising bandwidth for AI workloads and apps and enabling AI-enabled PCs to reach new heights. Based on PCMark 10 tests, users can improve productivity tasks by up to 15% and increase performance by up to 7% for workloads involving the creation of digital material. Since LPCAMM2 is upgradeable, users can quickly change out their modules and expand their memory capacity as needed, in contrast to soldered-down memory. OnePlus Nord N30 5G
Who it’s for: The Nord N30 5G is a good option for people on a budget who still want a phone that does more than the bare minimum.
Why we like it:
The OnePlus Nord N30 5G costs less than $300, and it offers a lot of value for that low price. Compared with its predecessor, the Nord N30 has a slightly larger, 6.7-inch high-refresh-rate LCD screen; it also offers a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 chip with near-flagship performance and a long-lasting battery that can survive more than a day. It runs the latest version of Android with up to two years of security updates, and it supports 5G, so it works on all three major carriers.
Flaws but not dealbreakers:
The Nord N30 has a 108-megapixel main camera lens that shrinks a photo to a 12-megapixel image. But a large megapixel count in cameras doesn’t always equal great photos, as the camera quality isn’t great in the best of scenarios, and it’s even worse in low lighting. In addition, the N30 feels like a downgrade from the N20 in its build quality, trading a matte finish for a glossy plastic one that attracts fingerprints. A Striking Visual Experience
The OnePlus Nord N30 smartphone presents a stylish, modern, visually appealing design. Its dimensions are 6.5 by 3.0 by 0.3 inches (HWD), and it weighs 6.88 ounces. The phone is available in a dark Chromatic Gray colorway that doesn’t necessarily stand out but looks classy just the same.
You’ll find a sizable 6.72-inch LCD panel gracing the front. The screen has an aspect ratio of 20:9 and boasts a 2,400-by-1,080-pixel resolution. That makes for a pixel density of 391ppi, which is what we expect from a phone at this price in 2023. The screen has an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate and a 240Hz touch response rate, both of which are above average for $300 phones. Thanks to itds 680 nits peak brightness, I had no issues seeing the screen under all sorts of lighting conditions, including direct sunlight.
OnePlus opted for a glossy plastic panel for the rear, though it mimics the appearance of glass. The polished finish adds a touch of sophistication, but it attracts dust and fingerprints. The camera module is neatly positioned in the upper-left corner of the device. It includes an unorthodox arrangement of two massive round lenses that stand out visually. There’s also an LED flash that’s plainly visible. The midframe is plastic rather than metal.
Respectable Snapdragon Speed
The N30 boasts impressive performance thanks to its Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 5G chip and 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM. This midrange processor delivers a solid user experience, making it suitable for basic multitasking, gaming, and everyday tasks. For storage, OnePlus offers only one model, with 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage. The RAM and storage specs, though, are generations behind what’s current (LPDDR5X and UFS 4.0, respectively), which mostly means they are slower.
In PCMark Work 3.0 benchmark scores, the N30 achieves an impressive score of 10,245. This benchmark evaluates the device’s performance across various work-related tasks, such as web browsing, video editing, and data manipulation. While the score is good, the recent Motorola Moto G Power 5G scored 11,945 on the same test, while the Google Pixel 6a scored a little lower at 9,558.
The OnePlus Nord N30 performs admirably regarding CPU output, as demonstrated by its GeekBench 5 single-core score of 688. For multicore tasks, the Nord N30 achieved a score of 2,044, indicating its good ability to handle resource-intensive applications and deliver smooth multitasking performance. The Moto G Power was in the same range, with scores of 879 and 2,269. The Google Pixel 6a scored a better 1,018 and 2,601 on the same test.
For gaming, there were some slowdowns while playing Genshin Impact, a resource-taxing game, when on the Low graphic settings. It’s playable, but you’ll definitely see frame-rate issues here and there.
While the OnePlus Nord N30 may not match the raw processing power of flagship devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (1,545 and 5,078 in Geekbench), it stands out as a reliable performer within its midrange category. Users can expect the device to handle day-to-day tasks effortlessly, offer a decent gaming experience, and provide smooth multitasking capabilities.
Regarding battery life, the OnePlus Nord N30 is reliable, offering all-day power that can easily keep up with your usage demands. Equipped with a 5,000mAh battery, this affordable smartphone ensures you won’t be left scrambling for a charger.
We tested the battery by streaming a YouTube video over Wi-Fi with the screen brightness set to the maximum. The N30 lasted 11 hours and 18 minutes in this test. For comparison, the Moto G Power outlasted the OnePlus phone with 13 hours and 35 minutes of runtime, while the Pixel 6a lasted 12 hours and 55 minutes. Battery life is one area the Nord N30 could improve upon a little bit.
The OnePlus Nord N30 supports OnePlus’ proprietary fast 50W wired charging, versus the 15W wired charging offered by the Moto G Power, so you can quickly top up your battery when needed. With the included charger, the device can replenish a significant portion of its battery capacity quickly. We filled the battery from empty in 55 minutes, which is great for a battery this large. There’s no wireless charging.
Fantastic 108MP Cameras
One of the standout features of the OnePlus Nord N30 is the camera system. The 108MP, f/1.75 main sensor with electronic image stabilization has a higher resolution than is typically found on budget-friendly devices. (The Motorola Moto G Power 5G has a 50MP main camera.) Last year’s OnePlus N20 featured a 64MP main camera, so this is a big upgrade in the number of pixels.
A 2MP depth camera and a 2MP macro camera support the primary shooter. These aren’t the ultrawide angle and telephoto lenses we prefer to see on modern phones, but they do add to the versatility of the handset in their own way.
Overall, the photos impress. When shooting with the main camera, you almost forget you’re using a $300 phone. The phone bins pictures down by a factor of nine (nona-binning) to 12MP by default, though you can use the Extra HD mode to get full 108MP images if you wish.
Establishing the Connection
The phone doesn’t compromise on connectivity, offering impressive 5G capabilities that set it apart from its competitors. It doesn’t support mmWave 5G spectrum but does include the critical C-band spectrum of US carriers for good speeds.
In our rigorous speed tests, the OnePlus Nord N30 5G demonstrated its ability to harness the power of T-Mobile’s 5G network. In an area with strong T-Mobile 5G Ultra Capacity service, the OnePlus Nord reached download speeds of 762Mbps and upload speeds of 106Mbps. By comparison, the Moto G Power attained 702Mbps down and 98Mbps up. In an area at the edge of T-Mobile’s 5G coverage (without 5G UC), the Nord N30 hit 2.2Mbps down and 0.9Mbps up. The G Power notched speeds of 1.2Mbps down and 0.5Mbps up in the same spot.
We ran similar tests to ensure the phone’s Wi-Fi was up to snuff. First, we placed the Nord N30 and Moto G Power in the same room as our Wi-Fi 6E router (though the phone only supports up to Wi-Fi 5) to see if there was a difference in performance. There wasn’t, with each phone offering speeds of about 600Mbps down and 175Mbps up. The devices also performed similarly at the edge of the router’s range, with the OnePlus getting 10Mbps down and 2Mbps up. Motorola’s budget phone offered 11Mbps down and 2Mbps up in the same spot.
Call quality is nothing short of impressive. Even in a relatively loud room, I could hear the person on the other end clearly, and they could hear me, too. The volume is also quite good, with the earpiece peaking at 78.3dB and the speaker at 93.1dB. This is about what I expect for phones in this price range.
I tested the phone’s stereo speaker quality by listening to “Silent Shout” by The Knife. The phone offered acceptable volume levels and minimal distortion, even during our bass-heavy test track. It wasn’t as crisp and clear as more expensive phones like the Pixel 7a or the Galaxy S23, but it still sounded good.
Finally, OnePlus included the relatively dated Bluetooth 5.1 standard, which works well enough but doesn’t offer the latest range and speed benefits of Bluetooth 5.3. The phone also has NFC on board for mobile payments.
Breathing in Oxygenos
Compared with other Android skins, I’ve always been a big fan of OxygenOS. Unfortunately, it’s become more cluttered and less like stock Android in recent years. However, it’s still one of the better manufacturer overlays, and OxygenOS 13.1 (based on Android 13) found on the Nord N30 5G is solid overall.
OnePlus will offer a single Android version upgrade to the N30 and three years of security updates, which is standard for most phones in this price range. It can’t hang with the Pixel 6a’s three Android versions and five years of security updates. If longevity is your main concern, you’ll want to examine Samsung’s offerings, but if you’re okay with only jumping to Android 14, you’ll be well-served by the Nord N30.
OxygenOS feels good on this handset. It deviates from the stock Android on Google’s Pixel phones, but it’s still aesthetically pleasing and easy to use (and closer to stock than Samsung’s phones). OnePlus includes minimal extra apps out-of-the-box, so you don’t have to waste time deleting stuff to get the phone up and running.

The Aorus X7 Pro comes with plenty of little system management tools, giving users easy access to laptop settings and firmware updates. Even the Alienware 18 held on by just a few more minutes for a total of 1 hour and 57 minutes of run time while unplugged. The MSI GT72 Dominator did marginally better lasting just 2 hours and 18 minutes. With regular use browsing between seven tabs in Chrome, writing in Microsoft Word, chatting in Skype and Hipchat, all while streaming tunes on Google Music, the Aorus X7 Pro only ran for 2 hours and 5 minutes. The slim gaming rig only lasted a short 1 hour 53 minutes while running our PCMark 8 battery life benchmark tests. Gaming machines have never been lauded for their long battery life, and going with a thin chassis has cut the run time of the X7 Pro even shorter. Worse yet, you can barely hear the speakers over the blaring fans, which makes a headset a necessity. For starters you'll be hard pressed to actually locate any actual speaker grills but it is outfitted with two speakers at the front and two additional subwoofers located on the laptop's underside.ĭespite all the tweeters, playing music on this machine sounds tinny and begins to distort even when just turning the system volume up to 20. Unfortunately the audio setup on the Aorus X7 Pro leaves much more to be desired. The MSI GT72 Dominator was able to achieve 37 fps in Metro: Last Light. Comparatively, the Alienware 18 was not able to break past 30 fps and only ran the game at 26.67 fps. We use Metro: Last Light as benchmark test, because it's a resource intensive game that brings most mobile gaming rigs to their knees, and yet Aorus thin gaming machine was able to play the game with every setting on Ultra at 43.67 frames per second. This dual-970 machine is also a smooth performer when playing games. By comparison, the MSI GT72 Dominator completed the same benchmark with 8,323 points using a single Nvidia 980M graphics card. While the Alienware 18 equipped with two Nvidia 880M in SLI was only able to rack up 8,323 points in Fire Strike, the Aorus X7 Pro has risen to the top with 10,451 points. Thanks to the laptop's dual GPU set up and speedy processor, we've finally recorded a Fire Strike that's over 9,000. The Aorus X7 Pro broke benchmark records left and right in our usual gauntlet of tests.
