“For the Delhi of the 1970s, I think I was a woman who was ahead of her times. I was comfortable with no bras, tank tops or hipster pants while going out on the streets. I permanently moved to Paris after my wedding and built a thriving fashion business with my husband in France. I tried to integrate some of our Indian customs into my new life there. I would celebrate Diwali the way we did back home, or do aarti on auspicious days. However, I was mocked at times by those around me and hence I eventually stopped. I adopted their way of living, studied French art & history, and became a national tourist guide in Paris by the late 90s. I showed my adopted country's beauty to not only the Americans & French, but also to Hindi & Punjabi speaking travellers from India & Pakistan. I have really enjoyed talking to Pakistanis - I felt that they were from my own country and it's only partition that separates us.

While I’m settled in Paris today, I’ve made it a yearly ritual to come back to Delhi ‒ there is a sense of belonging here, a feeling of homeliness which somehow makes it okay for a stranger to put their head on your shoulder for a nap on the train. There are so many things I love about my trips to Delhi ‒ drinking dhabe wali chai, eating fish from Bengali Market, scouring for clothes, bangles and street food from Lajpat Nagar, walking around Qutub Minar, and perhaps most of all, speaking to people in my own language.The ongoing pandemic has made it nearly impossible for me to travel this year and I’m just longing to be there.”
