Hey Flans :), was just reading Wikipedia on the debut and it says that you 'pasted up' the art on the cover.
How much of the cover did Rodney do Vs you? Or was it just a case of Rodney doing the individual elements on the cover and you combined them?
JF: oh I realize my terminology is so archaic, it might be confusing. First to be clear--Rodney Alan Greenblat created ALL the artwork including the handwriting on the first album cover. It was a work of his imagination and he deserves full credit.
To explain "paste up" Before computers, a paste up artist (which was my job for a number of years) was one of the lower level folks in an art dept. at a newspaper, magazine or book publisher. You created the mechanical, which was a board with black and white art (either type or xeroxes of art sized the board), with all the typographic information as well as art instructions usually in blue pencil so it wouldn't get reproduced--and that, along with the original color illustration or photography, was photographed to be folded in as a layer in the photo-offset printing process.
The type was output by a dedicated machine--a very early computer essentially--and there were also photostatic machines, nicknamed stat machines that would put moire dots on artwork (those patterns of dots you see in newspapers) along with resize things or marry various visual elements together into one stable piece of art.
All these tasks would require a magazine to have a staff of a dozen or so people to put out a monthly edition. When computers came in, it was one or two folks finishing the same amount of work.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit - 1988
An American live action/ animated comedy mystery film. Set in a 1947 version of Hollywood where cartoon characters known as "toons" and people co-exist, the film follows Eddie Valiant, a private investigator who must help help Roger Rabbit, a toon who is framed for the murder of Acme Corporation's owner.
It was the most expensive animated film of that era with a budget of $30 million. The budget escalated to over $50 million.
Mime artists, puppeteers, mannequins and robotic arms were commonly used to help the actors interact with "open air" and imaginative cartoon characters. VistaVision cameras installed with motion-control technology were used for the photography of the live-action scenes, which would be combined with animation.
Filming took seven and a half months with an additional month for blue screen effects of Toontown. Post production took fourteen months. The computers were still not powerful enough to make a complicated movie like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, so all the animation was done using cels and optical compositing.
The animators and artists were given black and white printouts of the live-action scenes called photostats and they placed their animation paper on top of them. They drew the animated characters in relation to the live-action footage.
After the rough animation was complete it was run through the normal process of traditional animation until the cels were shot on the Rostrum Camera with no background. Th cartoon characters were given depth using three lighting layers, shadows, highlights and tones.

The Truth is a Ruin | Bucky & Gamora
They’ve been on the road for over a day, far past the hustle of New York and straight through that of other cities-- through the Appalachian Mountains and past the farmlands with their rundown, vine-strangled barns and gun shops attached to liquor stores.
The sun is fading when he pulls into the parking lot of a stray, lone diner, no other cars except for those he guesses belong to the workers. Good. Bucky kills the ignition, and the silence presses in on them-- easy to ignore with the low rumble of the engine and the occasional bump skip of the tires over uneven pavement, oppressive without it. He twists, reaching behind his seat for the bag of cash, grabs two twenty dollar bills, and zips it closed, shoving it back underneath the driver’s seat.
          ( beneath several layers of blankets, stashed in the trunk, are several bags of tactical gear-- four I.C.E.R.s, two photostatic veils, body armor; he keeps the encrypted drive on his person-- doesn’t feel right to leave it unguarded ) 
     “You hungry?” A paused, filled by the routine motion of adjusting his baseball cap over his head. “Y’know, you never did mention where you’re from.”

I decided to take a look at the process behind graffitiing and the different elements/steps that go into it. Firstly ‘Stencil’ are usually made beforehand, they can be made out of paper or cardboard and are brought to where the designer wants to graffiti and is attached to the wall via tape. not every Designer does this, as some like to work freehand but it is one of the first steps in the process. Then obviously spray paint cans would be used in layering motions to create lines and fill in shapes to create incredible typography on the wall or illustrate different items. 
GRaffiti styles that are a part of the process (definitions from https://www.rileystreet.com/blogs/art/how-to-graffiti)
Tags: This is the original form of graffiti that consists of simple lettering unique to the individual urban artists. 
Throw-ups: Throw-ups are slightly more complicated than tags. The letters take on a more artistic form with more color and often contain bubble letters.
Blockbuster: These are similar to throw-ups but are much larger. Instead of the bubble style, use a block style for lettering, hence the name. 
Wildstyle: If you’ve ever had difficulty reading graffiti letters, it may be because of its wildstyle. These elaborate works of art take much more time and creativity than the original throw-up.
Stencil: This type of graffiti involves making a stencil out of a durable piece of material and then spray painting inside the cutouts. This is a faster way to create graffiti but impressive nonetheless. 
Piece (masterpiece): As you can probably guess, a piece is a complete work of art with more than simple lettering. This type of graffiti includes images of varying subjects and even backgrounds done freehand. 
3D: This form of graffiti can also be considered an optical illusion. The artist creates an image that seems to take on a three-dimensional visual, almost jumping off the pavement.

Gutenberg started making bible mechanically but wanted them to look handmade so he could sell them expensive - he managed to print 200 bibles that were all alike. movable type let him change the size of type, etc
1886 - Linotype,  - machine lets set lines of type. types in a line automatically spaced - mass education became possible bc they could mass produce books. 
Half tones or dots were used to create images - they were expensive and required  a lot of time, so pictures were rarely used.

What were the processes described in the documentary?

How has printing processes influenced the aesthetics of the era mentioned in the movie?
- Linotype made mass education possible, and books were made more affordable for the working class.

- The markup person was an incredibly important role because they had a preconceived idea of the page layout in their head.
What were the methods, tools and evolving social roles that gave rise to the graphic design industry as we know it today?
- Otmar Morgenthau invented the linotype machine. Which was one of the greatest machines in history.
- Photo typesetting (cold print) brought more women into the workplace in the printing industry.
- The back-and-forth relationship between the editor and galley, trying to make the page design as perfect as it can be.
- Photostat machines would instantly develop an image to scale/reproduce image.
- Layering an image with different photos and also different colours create a college effect
How was the transition from manual & digital means of production in the discipline of graphic design?
- It was very difficult for graphic designers to make the switch from manual to digital. When the first Apple Macintosh and LaserWriter printer came out it was ridiculed and called unreliable. Earlier models of the LaserWriter printer product came out pixelated. A lot of designers said that graphic design/typography is better with the manual process/method.
Nowadays, clients believe graphic work is quick and easy compared to the difficulty and time consuming manual process before computer design became easily accessible.

- Difficult. For page printing for example, a lot of math and tedious counting was involved prior to printers and only having access to phototypesetting.

- Moving type into italics or bold became much quicker and cheaper.
- A studio has moved to a single laptop.
- Iteration has become more efficient and quicker.
- Nowadays, clients believe graphic work is quick and easy compared to the difficulty and time taken back before computer design became easily accessable.
I enjoyed this documentary especially as a good amount of the processes showed are directly involved with my own research of 1960 New York.

More Photoshop work
These are the other photostat I developed further on photoshop. They have the same layout/ concept as each other but they have different text/images on them. For this one I used the whale drypoint print that I made last week and then used an image of a fishing net to cover half over the face. I layered text on top and played around with colours, transparency and hues. My favourite outcomes are the first 2.
I like this one because I think the sage green and black and white tones work really well together creating a slightly colder/ harsher feel. I also like how clear the whale is and that it doesn’t get lost amongst the plastic.

I love this outcome because of the complimentary blue and orange colours, the blue highlighting certain features of the face and the whale. I think it works well overall but I do think that maybe the text should be darker as it looks slightly hectic with the same colours as the rest of the piece.

This is probably my least favourite outcome as I don’t think it works well and the red is too harsh. I just don't feel as though it has come together as a whole.

Assignment #2: Individual Research on Collage Art & Artists
I chose these artists, at first glance, by their use of color in their pieces; upon further inspection, I was intrigued by the further meaning of their artwork.
As for both of these artists, I personally identify with their methods; in my artwork, I struggle with trying to create depth in my pieces, and they often look flat or two dimensional; In all of these pieces, I greatly appreciate the methods the artists use to create pieces that reflect deep perspective and field of vision.
Joseph Cornell’s artwork is very centered around winter feelings, even going so far as to include fake snow in his “pink palace” piece. This may be trying to reflect the feelings that winter brings about for some people, as his pieces often give off a lonely feeling.
Alfred Tarazi’s pieces have a much more direct theme; many of his pieces include imagery from the Lebanese civil war; his pieces contrast postcards, colorful and bright, and scenes from wartime, black and white. They accentuate the idealism and the realism of this country.
Both artists used color to emphasize the themes in their work. Cornell uses muted dark blues, snowy baby blues, and dark silhouettes of trees to create feelings of cold weather. Tarazi uses the contrast of the colorful postcards to the black-and-white war photos to emphasize the stark difference between the two. Cornell also uses line to emphasize the shapes of his work; especially in the  piece “The Rain Barrel,” as this is the only way that the figures in the image stand out, further emphasizing the idea that the viewer is seeing the figures through a dense snowfall. Both artists use perspective, but in different ways; Cornell uses actual perspective, as his pieces are often in three dimensional boxes, which helps add depth to the piece by layering the elements inside of it. Tarazi, however, uses the perspective in his background postcards and layers the war photos on top to create a foreground and background.

McCarthur Binion who’s work I saw at the Venice Biennial studied creative writing and decided to change direction after discovering artist’s such as Malevich, Picasso and Wilfredo Lam. He was the first African-American to graduate from Cranbrook Academy of Fine Arts, Michigan. This work is part of a series called DNA. It includes photostats of his birth certificate and pages from his address book. The paintings reflect his experience as a child. I was impressed by the scale of the work and the fact that it draws you in with the knowledge that the content is personal and I could appreciate the process of layers that are intriguing.

Bristol Artists Book Event - BABE 2017
I’m feeling excited and motivated to make, do and read more after my visit to BABE, the 6th biennial festival of artist’s book making at Arnolfini.  
Returned home with new works for our concise collection of artists’ books that we currently keep under the bed. Plus, my notebook is crammed with discoveries new to me: artists, processes, research, events, learning, happenings....
For the past two BABE events I’ve shared work as a stall-holder and this year am reminded it’s just as useful to talk about work, make friends and learn about each others’ practice from the other side of the book event table - as a visitor. 
Having reflected on some of the works brought home from BABE (pictured above) I’ve made some notes:
* Roberts Print ‘Print It Then Publish It’ is a photocopied handbill outlining the work of artist Richard Roberts and his latest publication Practice Makes Printmakers - A Manifesto a book that ‘condenses years of printing experience into a manifesto of Richard’s own.’
* Mark Pawson’s book of papery leftovers Aggressive Schoolbook was ‘produced in small batches continually from 1993 - 2007.’ This unique edition of the series binds together a pirate themed wallpaper border centrefold accompanied by taxi maps; paper scraps and stickers leftover from badge making; old photocopied bumpf for book fair stallholders;  Tower Hamlets mayoral candidate information; pages from a 3D comic and some post-it notes.
* EAK Press loves sugar paper - I totally get this - I’m a fan. These photocopied fold-outs contain fuzzy photostats of sculptural assemblages called ‘Some Things’. We also picked a hotdog and ketchup collaged ‘Town of Wicklow’ postcard.
* Rebecca Weeks’ ‘Lost Cat’ is a book of hand drawn lost cat posters featuring the missing pussos: Miss Margret, Anthrax, Genghis  and Cream Pudding. Each poster is boldly drawn in black with each cat brightly colour washed and reminiscent of Andy Warhol’s ‘25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy’(sic). On the reverse of Lost Cat a further drawing: Get a Dog.
* Gloria Glitzer is a small press for artists’ books and art zines. Based in Berlin Franziska Brandt and Moritz Grünke organise a library of Risograph printed artist made publications and Moritz runs a blog artzines.de. I bought ‘The book as the future of the past’ motivated by the critical perspective on artzines and zinesters presented here in this little text.
* Manchester School of Art - Emma Wilson’s handmade photo-book Chapelfield seems to play with the page structure of the family photo album. A sequence of photographs of a housing estate are digitally printed directly onto the pages. Popping up as layers on top of these are smaller, loosely secured reproductions of older, personal photos of residents pictured sitting in the sun, stroking dogs and digging a flower bed.
‘Design for Dreaming’ Number 1, 2015.  Picked this seemingly anonymous cut/paste publication from Mark Pawson - a mix of reflections, references and regurgitations of television programmes, website links, comic strip politics, appropriated theory, sabotaged design handbooks and crudely painted lifestyle adverts. I need to spend some time with this publication figuring out the references.
* Meanwhile, in Loch Ness, the recent investigative report ‘BookIshNess’ was researched by the newly formed Loch Ness Investigation Bureau Rebooted (LNIBR). Launched at BABE, we snapped up a copy containing accounts of sightings of the Loch Ness Monster and a bibliography of new editions on the subject sent in by authors, researchers and the public - what a treat!
Passport Office
Lucky for me, in these crazy times, I joined the queue (see picture above) and was issued a passport (000069) at Stephen Fowler & Harriet Price’s BABE Passport Office with indefinite leave to enter BABE.  Like other passport bearers met surreptitiously throughout Saturday, I mapped the book fair by means of collecting rubber stamp prints from stallholders. Rubber stamped impressions included ‘Flumpf-speak’ Bad Dudes Republik (ABC Artists’ Book Club) and a mini rubber stamping happening with accompanying narrative on ‘the artist who chopped off the summit of Mont Blanc and put it in a museum case’ (Johan Deumens Gallery) - interesting to note that Johan Deumens was selling pages at BABE from Ulises Carrión’s Ephemera (1970) also Carrión’s unfinished stamped newspaper. Curious to see these in light of my a-n travel bursary research trip to Amsterdam exploring artist run book stores. Reflecting on the fascinating insight into Carrión shared by Johan, I wonder about the politics of the archive when it is for sale. 
So much now to follow up on - books, badge wearing, conversations, project ideas, reading and lots of looking forward to the next Bristol Artists Book Event.

Risograph
I went to the print room to learn more about risograph. It is something similar like screen printing because each colour needs to be on it’s own layer.  You need to create a new master everytime you change the ink drum. In my opinion, I think that risograph is something similar to photostat machine but it only have few colour for us to choose from which is pink, blue, black, and yellow. The ink used is very transparent so we are able to have different colour by overlapping each of the layers. For example, if you print blue on top of pink, you will be able to get purple. The images above shown that I was experimenting the risograph with my business card design. I am able to understand better about how it’s work after the demonstration.
