Let’s talk about Asian / Filipinx visibility and smashing stereotypes. Today I’m glad I stood up for myself when I told a prominent web content creator that spreading positive messages about Asian Americans would be more effective if Asian Americans are doing the talking, not at the margins or the sidelines as accessories. There’s a fine line between allyship and colonizing the podium. While my response wasn’t received favorably (and that’s ok) I was glad I stood up for my beliefs even if they were dismissed. #thevintagefashionchallenge - one last thing: I'd like to end this challenge with a call to action. With regard to diversity and inclusion in the vintage subculture (and beyond), we need deeds not words. Should minorities and the marginalised constantly have to fight for a place at the table? No. While those of us who are either poorly represented or not represented at all raise our voices and push for more, big businesses, media and those in more prominent positions within our subculture hold power. They have the ability to make big differences and quite frankly tokenism, cries of 'I don't see colour/size' and ignoring debate and discussion don't cut it. They never will. So look at the power you hold, check your privilege and, if you can, do something: support marginalised and minority business owners, read, challenge misconceptions, engage in discussion, write, go see marginalised and minority performers, use social media as a platform to fight the good fight, encourage others and listen. Change doesn't take place with gentle smiles and small talk. Who's with me?
