His father died in 1621 while the prince was still a child, and he became Grand Duke on coming of age in 1629. Renato Balestra, Celeblueation: l’arte della couture in mostra a Firenze

“Celeblueation”, appare quasi un enigma fonetico, una parola  a suo modo elegante che sprigiona grazia intrigante: ma, se la contempli con l’orecchio ben agganciato al gusto, ne sciogli facilmente l’incastro per scoprire l’indizio prezioso che racchiude lì al centro, nel cuore. Proprio come uno scrigno che svela il suo tesoro.

Proprio come fosse uno splendente ricamo di suoni applicato a impreziosire il tessuto straordinario che si dipana nell’evento di cui è a titolo: “Celeblueation” è la mostra antologica di Renato Balestra, un viaggio intenso nella sua vita di couturier allo stesso tempo profondamente italiano e brillantemente internazionale. Lì, nel cuore del titolo, c’è infatti il richiamo al celeberrimo “Blu Balestra”: la sfumatura speciale divenuta firma inconfondibile della maison, nonché fil-rouge d’amore spontaneo dello stilista per questa tinta e le sue suggestioni, che in tante forme han costellato le esperienze e le creazioni.

E che, per l’occasione, diviene luce splendente con cui la mostra dipinge i luoghi in cui è ospitata: ora è il turno di Firenze, dove l’iconico Blu Balestra illuminerà la facciata della Fondazione Zeffirelli dal prossimo 8 gennaio, fino al 2 febbraio 2020. La mostra “Celeblueation” è, infatti, un evento itinerante: ha già distribuito la sua bellezza nelle tappe di Domodossola (Museo Civico di Palazzo San Francesco), Monza (Villa Reale), Napoli (Certosa e Museo di San Martino) e Forte dei Marmi (Fortino lorenese), ed ora, in occasione di “Pitti Immagine Uomo 97”, “Celeblueation” è accolta nella suggestiva sede della Fondazione Zeffirelli, più precisamente è immersa nella meraviglia della Sala della Musica, ovvero l’oratorio del complesso monumentale di San Firenze risalente alla seconda metà del Seicento, l’unica architettura completamente barocca di Firenze.

Un allestimento site specific prova di vera complicità tra moda e arte, un’alchimia che sublima l’esposizione che si compone di circa 300 pezzi tra bozzetti, disegni e abiti: ma che qui si amplia con un’inedita selezione di elementi che raccontano gli esordi di Renato Balestra, quando la sua grande passione per la pittura era ancora parte integrante dell’espressione creativa da cui nasceva la sua moda.

E che si unisce ad un’altra profonda passione, quella dedicata al teatro: in mostra saranno anche i disegni che Renato Balestra ha realizzato per le celebri opere teatrali come “La Cenerentola” di Gioacchino Rossini, “Il Cavaliere della Rosa” di Richard Strauss, “La Turandot” di Giacomo Puccini, arricchita ora dalla sezione con le creazioni dei costumi disegnati per “Il lago dei cigni” messo in scena dal Teatro dell'Opera di Belgrado, una produzione per la quale, per la prima volta, Renato Balestra ha posto la sua talentuosa firma creativa anche sulle scene.

Moda e teatro, Balestra e Zeffirelli, un’alchimia che è stata anche un’onorevole amicizia tra loro: «Annuncio con grande entusiasmo – dice Renato Balestra - che la mia Celeblueation sarà esposta durante la 97a edizione di “Pitti Uomo” nella prestigiosa Fondazione Zeffirelli, a Firenze. Franco Zeffirelli è stato un grandissimo artista e anche un grande uomo. Ho avuto l'onore di essergli amico e la gioia di aver collaborato ai costumi di scena di Così è (se vi pare) di Luigi Pirandello. Ricordo quanta passione metteva nel suo lavoro e i suoi risultati così eclatanti. Grazie a “Pitti Uomo” quindi, e alla Fondazione del più grande Maestro del teatro, della cultura, vera gloria italiana; e un grazie particolare a Pippo Zeffirelli che ha creduto e collaborato a questa prestigiosa iniziativa».

“Celeblueation” è dunque la celebrazione di una vita dedicata all’arte della moda: un percorso nell’unicità raffinata dello stile Renato Balestra che nel tempo ha plasmato l’essenza raffinata del gusto Made in Italy riconosciuto e amato nel mondo, ha abbigliato anche grandi realtà italiane come Alitalia e il Senato della Repubblica, ha vestito di straordinarie opere sartoriali donne altrettanto straordinarie, regine, principesse, first lady, attrici e celebrità, tutte preziose amanti e testimoni dell’esclusiva arte della bellezza e alta sartorialità italiana creata da Renata Balestra. 

Un omaggio al suo poliedrico talento creativo e all’eclettica personalità artistica che sin dagli esordi lo hanno reso un generoso creatore di bellezza vera, quella allacciata alle emozioni: e di quel lusso che, con la modestia delicata e colta che lo contraddistingue, secondo Renato Balestra nulla ha a che fare con il mero sfarzo, bensì è questione di buon gusto e glamour, di saper indossare il bell’apparire e le buone maniere come in una sinfonia che aspira alla perfezione. Simon Crompton of Permanent Style at Pitti 97

Last year when I went to Pitti 97 as a photographer for Styleforum, I posted some street style images on Instagram and uploaded my images to the Styleforum blog where they were posted each day. But besides street style, I shot many various events, as well as the podcast guests when we recorded. I’m not sure most of those images ever saw the light of day. So I’ve decided to feature them here over the coming weeks.

Last week I posted a few photos of Ethan Newton and Tony Sylvester up close from our recording session, and so this week I’m featuring the photos I shot of Permanent Style’s Simon Crompton.

I wrote about my experience after returning home in case you missed that or want to revisit it. All my posts about Pitti 97 can be found here. Simon was a very gracious, kind man, who gave me time of day even though I consider myself no one. Early one morning, I ran into him on the street, and while he walked to an appointment we chatted about his site and how he’s been able to make it his full-time gig, and his experience doing so.

I love the bewildered look of the man in the red jacket behind him. I wish so much I could ask him what was going through his mind.
