Iranian forces attack people protesting Mahsa Amini’s murder

A general strike has been launched today across East Kurdistan following the calls of the Kurdish parties. Citizens in East Kurdistan did not open their shops nor go to work today.

A general strike has been declared in many cities of East Kurdistan and Iran today to protest the death of a young Kurdish woman named Mahsa (Jina) Amini, who was tortured to death by Iranian forces for not wearing hijab properly. The Iranian regime forces attacked protesters and citizens' houses after people took to the streets in Diwandar and Seqiz.

In a joint statement on 17 September, the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK) and the Democratic and Free Eastern Kurdistan Community (KODAR) called on the people of East Kurdistan and Iran to go on a general strike on September 19 after Amini was tortured to death by Iranian regime forces.

In the meantime, the parties affiliated to the Iranian Kurdistan Parties Cooperation Centre, the Iranian Communist Party-Kurdistan Organization and several other parties from East Kurdistan, non-governmental organizations and political activists called for participation in the general strike.

According to the images circulated through social networks, people have launched a general strike in Seqiz, Sine, Shino, Bukan and Bane. Images show that shops have been closed in the mentioned regions.

Following the announcement of a general strike, protests have started to spread in Diwander and Seqiz. Forces affiliated with the Iranian regime attacked the people. Images show the Iranian forces opening fire on citizens' houses in Seqiz.

The Iranian forces also attacked protesters in the city of Diwandar.

Students at Iran's Tehran University protested the murder of Mahsa Amini by chanting the slogan "I will kill whoever killed my sister". The Iranian regime forces attacked the students as well.

Hundreds of women protested the murder of Amini in the city of Rasht in Gilan province under the motto "Let women live their freedom".

Where are these consonants from? Bruhn 2014 reconstructs *p(j)aŋ 'deaf' and *a-pjak 'flat', suggesting *pj > *pt > *tp > tʙ̥ for nàngtpìng and -tpák - and Bruhn notes that PCN *-aŋ can give Sangtam -aŋ, -iŋ, or -e, so the correspondences look regular - but two words isn't strong evidence.

(Why does Bruhn's discussion of Sangtam ignore these segments? He transcribes nangtping as naŋ-tə-piŋ, writing that "[t]he strange db/tp cluster in both Sangtam transcriptions likely represents a fast-speech compression of a prefix + root collocation", but it doesn't.)

Lotha and Yimchungrü preserve pj-. Are there Lotha cognates? Let's see... the dictionary on archive.org, bizarrely, translates banns but not bat. The Lotha Bilingual Dictionary (PDF) has otsolov 'daughter', which reinforces the suggestion of a -tpü prefix (for feminine kin terms?) in Sangtam words like tsulatpü.

Lotha words that look potentially related:

nopüng 'deaf' (but presumably from *paŋ rather than *pjaŋ)

epi 'fence' (probably not)

epyakü 'flat' (e-pyak-ü?)

tssanpyok 'gray (n.)'

mhechoa 'forget' (note also nnmhechokhoko /nm̥etʃʰokʰoko/ 'memorable', unless this nn- is a prefix?)

ophi 'plate' (maybe?)

On second thought, let's just search STEDT again. Within the 1.3.1 Central Naga group, we have:

tʙ̥āŋ 'needle': Yimchungrü tüpean, Lotha opyam ~ opyim. Why do none of these finals match?

tʙ̥ʌ̀ 'fence': Chungli Ao atsü (*py > ts? unsure, but Bruhn reconstructs only *p(ʰ)w *t(ʰ)j *lj for Proto-Ao)

léktʙ̥ʰīŋ 'bat': Longchang Mongsen Ao alepti; Mangmetong Mongsen Ao aləptì (maybe a Wanderwort?)

kʰítʙā 'hip joint': Lotha repyak (the Sangtam word would have to be mistranscribed for this to make sense, which seems unlikely since the final syllable has a mid tone rather than a high)

nàŋtʙ̥ìŋ 'deaf': Yimchungrü nükhünpeang

tʙ̥ʰāŋ 'drum': maybe something could be done here with e.g. Maring phung, Khoirao tung, Tangkhul p(h)ung? But these are likely unrelated even to each other - PCN *tuŋ 'stem, trunk' (via 'log drum'?) and PKC *khuaŋ 'drum'.

síŋ-tʙ̥ák 'plank (wood-flat)': PCN *a-pjak, Lotha e1-pjak2-, Yimchungrü amüpeak

nmʌ̄tʃʌ̀-pà 'forget': maybe a relation to PTB *b/m-la:p 'forget'? But I don't know if this would be at all regular.

tʙ̥ʰʎ 'plate': PTB *pu; Lotha Naga o1-phi1 'plate' or opfhu 'dish, pot'... but there's Lepcha fyu < *pu. IIRC Lepcha has preinitial *s- > medial yod (in some cases?), so given mhechoa < PTB *g/s-ma-t/n there could be something here? But probably not.

Overall, I don't see anything trivial and obvious, but based on 'needle', 'deaf', 'flat', and maybe 'hip joint', maybe they're from sequences of a labial initial and a medial yod?

Maryam Fethi, İran’da Jîna Emînî’nin katledilmesiyle başlayan ve aylardır süren halk serhildanı, İran’daki kadın mücadelesi hakkında bilgiler verdi. Katılımcıların sorularını da yanıtlayan Maryam Fethi, herkesin İran ve Rojhilat’ta gelişen “Jin Jiyan Azadî”  devrimini desteklemesi gerektiğini ifade etti. Iran’s prosecution authorities and security and intelligence agents in West Azerbaijan Province have forcibly disappeared an Iranian Kurdish dissident, Edris Feqhi, since July 2021. He remains at risk of torture and other ill-treatment.

Amnesty International has learned that Edris Feqhi was a civil society and environmental activist in Kurdistan province for many years. A statement issued by the PJAK on August 6, 2021, suggests that, in the face of intensified attacks on civil society activists, Edris Feqhi decided to join the political wing of PJAK and move to its base in northern Iraq. PJAK has both armed and political wings. Those joining its political wing may carry arms, including when crossing into Iran for recruitment or political organizing purposes, but they are not tasked with waging armed attacks on state bodies. A local journalist who investigated the circumstances surrounding the shooting on 24 July 2021, including by speaking to local witnesses, told KHRN in August 2021 that Edris Feqhi and Mohsen Ghaderi were not armed at the time of the ambush.
