If not geology, then what?

I mentioned before that I was always more interested in plants than I was with rocks and engineering, and considered studying botany at university. I realise now that actually, pure botany is not where my heart lies either and that probably wouldn’t have been the best course of action for me.

What I probably should have done is start a horticultural apprenticeship after school. However, I also mentioned before that my school was not a great one, and if you were bright and likely to get good grades, you were funnelled down the university route (I’m guessing, to make the school look good) even if that wasn’t actually the best route for the individual. There was definitely an attitude that apprenticeships were for the kids too dim to make it into even a bad uni. Which makes me quite cross really. I certainly never received any information at all about apprenticeships at school, and ironically I probably would be earning significantly more now if I’d trained as a plasterer or plumber than I would in engineering! 

BUT, there’s nothing I can do about that now. University wasn’t time wasted. I learned plenty of things about how to be motivated to study, time management, how to cook, how to clean, how to live with other people and generally take care of myself. I’ve made some wonderful friends, and moved away from my home town. 

I guess you can’t really know what you like and dislike until you try it, and you’re unlikely to get it right first time. 

This was part of my epiphany last August. I wanted to work in horticulture. Plants and gardening is the one thing that I am constantly interested by. I restored the garden in my old rental house, and I can’t describe how much pleasure I derived from it. Even after the most hideous day at work, I’d still have the energy to mow the lawn, or do a bit of weeding. I’m always at my calmest when I’m out in the fresh air, grubbing in the soil, or walking in the woods. I am certain than if I am to have a good quality of life, and generally good mental state, this needs to be a priority in my day.

I completed my RHS Level 2 qualification last year, and I’m applying to study formerly at Wisley or Rosemoor next September. I don’t know that I’ll get in obviously. I don’t really have much by way or practical experience so they’d have to take a massive punt. But. I am going to just try get experience whereever I can when I get back from Andorra. It’ll be the very beginning of Spring when I get back so hopefully lots of places will be grateful for a spare pair of hands :)
