this is such a Nothing problem but i'm still a bit mad about the creepy factor of liminal spaces being replaced by generic AND THERE'S A BIG WEIRD MONSTER CHASING YOU in mainstream depictions of like the backrooms & all

#pools on steam is The Best liminal horror game because it has No enemies #it doesn't have some slenderman ripoff silently stalking you it doesn't have jumpscares it doesn't have creepy music #it's just you and big rooms that make no sense and darkness and your mind creating the dread for you #you'll Feel like there's someone or something lurking around you'll feel lost you'll feel trapped #precisely because you're so alone and there's nothing in there. the fear comes from You and that's the whole point #it's about the way the place is both familiar (it's a pool ! you've been to one before !)#and alien with the way the corridors are too long and the diving boards too high and the layout too maze-like #and maybe as you wade through the pool the echo of the water's noise sounds like there's someone behind you or around the corner #why is that chair here ? where does that lead to ? how deep is this hole ? why is there a sheep on a fucking sofa #it's peaceful it's threatening it's comforting it's unsettling it's mundane it's mysterious #and then people took that genre and put five night feddy in it #and now when they see Actual liminal horror they think it's boring because it doesn't have pippy playtim chase you with big knife #i'm sad Anyway play pools
