ngl the fact that nancy will be wearing an outfit similar to the one worn by steve’s celebrity crush in his favorite movie kinda makes up for the fact that we hardly got any footage of s5 stancy so far

the fact that the duffers had steve bring up having a date planned with heidi, a girl who’s planning to go out of state for college, in the same episode that it’s revealed that nancy is planning on doing just that seems kind of intentional to me idk

i mean while steve did have a problem with going on a date with heidi it wasn’t because he didn’t want to start a relationship with someone moving to a different state. steve only had a problem with potentially starting another meaningless relationship. which means that he’d be fine with dating someone who would be going out of state for college as long as their relationship was serious…

steve describing nancy as someone who cares about others back in s1 and nancy’s care for barb (as well as her guilt and determination to get her justice) pulling her away from him. nancy describing steve as protective and steve’s protectiveness preventing him from truly listening to nancy when she opened up to him at the library and seeing just how much hiding the truth about what happened to barb was eating away at her.

steve walking in the woods with dustin and telling him that there’s no point in falling in love with someone because they’re only going to end up breaking your heart. steve walking through a different set of woods two years later with the girl that broke his heart and thanking her because she didn’t just break his heart, she also ended up changing his entire life.

i honestly find the fact that steve ended up confessing to nancy in the upside down to be rather poetic. the upside down has always been this dangerous otherworldly place associated with fear, death, and trauma. it’s where barb died, it’s where steve himself almost died, it’s where vecna made nancy revisit her trauma regarding barb’s death etc. but during steve’s confession and the moments that led up to it, the upside down became a different place entirely. the two of them were able to carve a space within it for themselves, away from all that negativity and the urgency and danger of what they were about to do. and it was in this place that threatened to destroy their future and nearly did only days earlier that steve told nancy that he had always dreamt of a future with her. and it was in this hopeless place that steve finally told her that he still had hope for them.

one thing that makes me pretty certain that stancy is going to be endgame is the true love quote. if stancy really was a plot device ship, they wouldn’t have been given a line with so much weight. and more significantly, the duffers chose to give this line to the couple whose relationship was narratively doomed from the beginning, that struggled with saying i love you, and whose love for each other was so notably dismissed in s2 during the “we like steve…but we don’t love steve” scene. no matter how much the fandom tries to dismiss it, the true love quote is not a throwaway line by any means. but rather it’s the writers acknowledging that there is something between steve and nancy and taking their relationship seriously, arguably for the first time.

find it funny how according to the script steve is suppose to be smiling back at nancy in this scene but instead he’s just staring at her like he’s trying to decide whether she’s really flirting with him or not

and i love how when eddie interrupts them, steve just shoots him an annoyed look but nancy on the other hand has such a dazed expression on her face😭
