Reposted from @evergladesnps Habitat loss is a main reason species that live on land become endangered. For this Endangered Species Day, we recognize an Everglades habitat that is disappearing. The Pine Rocklands, also called the Pinelands, have hard rocky ground, made up of limestone. The pinelands are found on higher ground and a bit of elevation makes all the difference here! This makes it a dry habitat, unlike the majority of the Everglades. They are extremely unique -- the ‪Long Pine Key‬ area in ‪Everglades National Park‬ holds around 80% of all remaining pine rockland found in Florida This globally imperiled habitat is a hotspot for plant biodiversity and is home to several federally listed endangered species such as Florida prairieclover and our state mammal, the Florida panther, as well as federally threatened species, like Garber's spurge and the Eastern indigo snake. Dalea flowers with precious white petals and cheerful yellow anthers! I think this is D. candida. Candida means shining or pure white.
