He developed a cancer-fighting soap — while in middle school

In a video for a nationwide science competition, Heman Bekele spelled out his mission in a single sentence. “Curing cancer, one bar of soap at a time.” In the two-minute video, Heman, a student at Fairfax County’s Frost Middle School, pitched his idea for a soap that could help fight skin cancer at a cost of less than $10 per bar. The soap, Heman explained, would be made with compounds that could reactivate the cells that guard human skin, enabling them to fight cancer cells. In April, Heman submitted the video to the 3M Young Scientist Challenge, an annual competition that invites students in grades five through eight to “change their world for the better with a single innovative idea.” Earlier this month, after competing against nine other finalists in the challenge, he won the title of America’s Top Young Scientist. “To see that all of the hard work paid off in the end, it was really a surreal experience,” Heman, now 14, told The Washington Post. Heman’s idea for the competition came from the early years of his life in Ethiopia. “There, I always saw people who were constantly working under the hot sun,” Heman said. He moved to the United States at age 4 and never really thought much more about it. But as he started considering ideas for the competition, he harked back to his time in Ethiopia and wondered how many of the people he’d seen working in the sun were aware of the risk of sun exposure. The memories fueled his decision to focus his research on skin cancer. “I wanted to make my idea something that not only was great in terms of science but also could be accessible to as many people as possible,” Heman said. As he thought about his approach, Heman wanted his product to be something that was as much of a “constant” in people’s lives as possible — an item that was “most convenient and most trustworthy,” he said. “No matter where you live, I think you know and trust soap in comparison to other medicinal products,” Heman said.

Eagle Who Thought Rock Was an Egg Finally Gets to Be a Dad

In early March, a bald eagle named Murphy, a resident of the World Bird Sanctuary in Valley Park, Missouri, was ready to become a father. He crafted his nest carefully in the bottom of his enclosure, his home for most of his 31 years of life since an injury left him unable to fly. As time went on, he became more and more protective of his offspring, screeching and charging at anyone who tried to come near.

“We’ve never had a bird at the sanctuary protect a nest like that, so viciously,” Dawn Griffard, CEO of World Bird Sanctuary, tells the Washington Post’s Praveena Somasundaram. 

Only one thing stood in the way: His careful brooding and nurturing was being spent on a lifeless rock. Murphy was experiencing a spring hormonal surge compelling him to brood, despite not having an egg of his own, which can lead birds to care for egg-like objects, Griffard tells Livia Albeck-Ripka of the New York Times.

“You can definitely see the imprinting happening, which is exactly what we wanted,” Griffard says to the Times.

Fans of the new eagle family can keep up with the regular updates posted on Facebook and Instagram. Holloway tells STLPR that the sanctuary is considering auctioning Murphy’s rock as a fundraiser for the nonprofit.

The sanctuary hopes to release the eaglet back into the wild this summer. Griffard tells the Post that Murphy will know when the time is right. Until then, Murphy will get the chance to experience parenthood in earnest.  

“He was sitting on a rock and everybody told him, ‘It’s a rock, it’s not going to hatch,’” Griffard tells the Post. “And all of a sudden, in his mind, it hatched and he has a chick.”

Mich. police say boy who was handcuffed was in ‘wrong place, wrong time’

The police chief in Lansing, Mich., has apologized after his department was widely criticized over a viral video showing an officer handcuffing a 12-year-old boy during a search for a suspected vehicle thief.

The 12-year-old had just put trash into a dumpster outside his home on Thursday afternoon when a police officer approached and handcuffed him, according to his family.

The boy, who is Black, was wearing a T-shirt and neon shorts — clothing that police said matched the description of a suspect. Video posted online shows the handcuffed boy being taken to a police vehicle while his father asks an officer why his son had been placed in handcuffs.

The bystander’s video was viewed more than 5 million times and led community members to condemn the Lansing Police Department for its handling of the situation.

The boy was traumatized by the incident and no longer wants to go outside, attorneys for his family said, according to the Associated Press.

The police department issued a statement on Friday, describing the boy’s handcuffing as an “unfortunate case of ‘wrong place, wrong time.’ ” The department also shared blurred images of the boy and the suspect, describing their outfits as “very similar.”

Lansing Police Chief Ellery Sosebee issued an apology to the boy and his family later that same day.

“It’s unfortunate that incidents like this occur, but through communication and sharing of information, we can help people understand the whole story,” Sosebee said. “We understand that something like this has an impact on all parties involved.”

On Thursday afternoon, officers were investigating multiple car thefts outside an apartment complex, and a witness to one of the incidents said they saw someone wearing neon shorts and a white shirt, police said.

An officer saw a person who matched that description, but the person fled, according to police. Then, another officer who was in the area saw the preteen, who police said was wearing a similar outfit, in the same apartment complex, the statement adds. The officer approached the boy with his gun unholstered and held in front of him, attorneys for the boy’s family said, according to the Associated Press.

Michael Bernard, the boy’s father, told CBS News that he went outside to check on his son after he did not return from taking out the trash. That’s when he saw that his son had been handcuffed by police, he said.

“I rushed out and asked the cop, ‘What’s the problem, why do you have my son in cuffs?’” Bernard told CBS.

Police said the boy was released once the officer realized he was not the suspect who had fled earlier. Video shows the boy was with police for about four minutes before an officer walked him to where his father stood on a sidewalk outside the apartment complex.

Bernard told CBS that his son was “stunned” by the incident: “He’s like, ‘What have I done?’”

Once the boy was released, an officer at the scene explained the situation to Bernard and “apologized for the misunderstanding,” Sosebee said in his statement.

“I have reviewed the incident and can confirm the officer who contacted and detained the young man was respectful and professional during his investigation,” the police chief added.

The department has not announced any arrests in the string of stolen vehicles.

The Bernard family is considering taking legal action against the Lansing Police Department, according to their attorneys.
