"i suggest you drink lots of water and work out more," the doctor told rowan. "if the pain continues, you can take pain medication, but i don't think it'll be necessary. take a half hour walk in the mornings and evenings and stay hydrated. perhaps watch your diet as well. it's nothing big."

rowan stared at him, unsure if he was being serious.

the doctor noticed this, raising a brow in her direction. "any questions?"

"i'm just -- i mean, i'm an athlete," she reminded him. "i work out a lot more than the average person. i stay hydrated. i've got professional trainers making sure i have a healthy, balanced diet. i can't get any healthier than this. telling me to drink more water, to work out, to eat healthy -- it's not a solution. i can't do it any better than i am right now."

rowan could've sworn the doctor was about to roll his eyes.

"you play in a league?" he asked her. "or just... recreationally?"

"i play professional hockey," her voice came out tougher than usual. "i play in the phf, for the toronto six. i play for team canada too, i just won a gold medal for this country a month ago. i can assure you, my diet and work out routine has nothing to do with the pain i'm feeling."

the doctor sniffed, noting some things down on the clipboard.

"alright, the best i can do is prescribe you some pain medication," he ripped a prescription off and handed it to her. "i can also refer you to a specialist, but i don't think it'll be much help."

"i'd like to see the specialist," rowan responded, taking the prescription.

"sure, okay," he nodded, filling out something else and handing it to her. "you'll get a call from that number in a few days to work out an appointment time."

"thank you," rowan told him, not really meaning it.

she left the room, making her way back to her car. she took a deep breath, reminding herself to calm down. being angry and driving home would do no one any good.

over the past few weeks, rowan had been experiencing lots of pain and intense cramping. her periods had always been a little unusual, but so were her mom's, and she didn't think too much about it. the big problem was the cramps and pain she'd have even after her period. her fiancé finally convinced her to get it checked out after seeing her crumple in the middle of her practice due to pain.

"this is why i haven't gotten my shit checked," she muttered to herself, angry at the doctor for simply dismissing her. she'd heard stories of this her whole life, and of course, it finally happened to her.

she sent a text to joseph, letting her know the appointment was done and she was going to see a specialist eventually. finally, convinced that she had cooled off a little, she turned the car on and made her way home.

rowan got the call to pick up her reports while she was washing the dishes.

"everything alright?" joseph asked her once she hung up.

"it was the specialist," she told him. "um, they told me i have to pick up the reports."

"that was pretty quick," he responded. "i thought they take like, weeks. i didn't know it only takes a few days."

"they usually only tell you to pick up reports if something's wrong," she continued quietly. "otherwise, they might not even call back."

"hey, hey," joe got up quickly, taking her hands in his. "hey, look at me. giving your report doesn't mean it's something bad, okay? you won't know until you get them."

"can you come with me?" she asked, her voice a little small.

"of course," he responded. "you don't have to ask. whatever you want, love."

rowan's heart felt like it might burst -- either from the nervousness of getting her report back, or the love she felt for joseph in that moment.

unable to speak, she simply nodded, allowing joseph to lead her outside and to the car. he talked while he drove her to the specialist's office, telling her about his day and all the crazy things his teammates had done.

she appreciated him a lot for that, for doing his best to take her mind off of this. she wasn't usually nervous when it came to things like this, but for some reason, she could only think up the worst things.

"you ready?" joe asked her, turning the car off and turning to her.

rowan closed her eyes, taking a deep breath the way her uncle had taught her years ago. a deep breath in, a deep breath out -- and out with it went the thoughts of everything that didn't matter in this moment.

she nodded at her fiancé, "ready."

"miss price?" the doctor asked, entering the room.

rowan sat up straighter, nodding, "that's me."

"and this is?" the doctor looked at joseph, sitting in one of the seats near the patient's bed.

"joseph woll," rowan introduced him. "my fiancé. he'll be staying here for the reports, i already signed a consent form at the front desk."

"perfect, it's nice to meet you," she smiled at joe. she turned to her computer, typing up a few things and pulling up some files. "okay, so rowan price? twenty three years old?"

"yup," rowan nodded.

"you came in for a pelvic ultrasound and test two days ago, due to intense, recurring abdominal pain, correct?"

"mhm," she nodded again.

the doctor furrowed her brows at the reports, turning back to rowan. "is there anything else you'd like to tell me? any other pain? discomfort? irregular periods?"

"it's mainly just cramps so bad that i can't even walk," she responded. "a little bit of back pain, but nothing else really hurts. sometimes i feel sick though. and my period's always been a little weird."

"hmm," the doctor noted. she turned back to rowan, passing over two ultrasound photos -- the printed results of her ultrasound a few days ago. "you see the tissue clumps right here? that's a type of tissue similar to the lining of your uterus."

rowan examined the ultrasound, barely able to make out what the doctor was explaining. it had nothing to do with the ultrasound, but it was simply the fact that rowan was unable to ever see ultrasounds.

her parents had once tried to surprise her with the ultrasound of her youngest brother when they were pregnant, and she had no idea what it was.

"well, this tissue isn't in your uterus," the doctor explained. "it's growing outside, which may cause bloating, especially around your period."

"that's what's causing the pain?" rowan asked. "uterus tissue not growing in my uterus?"

"it's a condition called endometriosis," the doctor told her. "you might've heard of it."

"i have, yeah," rowan muttered. she might've heard of it, but she didn't know much about it.

"there's no cure for this, but there are treatments," the doctor told her. "hormone therapy, iuds -- surgery's also an option. the treatments can relieve your pain, they can increase your fertility, they--"

"wait, what?" rowan cut in. "it affects fertility?"

"in many women, yes," the doctor told her. "you won't know for sure unless you try to get pregnant, but there is a solid chance you may be infertile. if you'd like, we can do more tests..."

the rest of the doctor's words seemed to go straight through rowan's ears. she was hearing them, but she wasn't understanding them.

she heard joe say something to the doctor, who nodded in understanding and left them in the room. the door closed behind her, and it was as if the spell had lifted.

"hey, look at me," joseph said to her, cupping her chin in his hands. "it's going to be okay. you're okay."

"i just -- i'm scared," rowan whispered, finally speaking. "i never thought about being a mom before, and now that i might not be able to be one -- this is so stupid, why am i like this?"

"don't do that," joe told her sternly. "don't invalidate your feelings. you were just informed of a health condition, you're allowed to be emotional over whatever part of it you want."

"i'm still mad about that stupid doctor too," she whispered, voice cracking as more tears welled up in her eyes.

"you should be mad about that too, he was a dick," joseph agreed.

rowan closed her eyes, leaning forward and letting joe wrap his arms around her.

"whatever's next, i'm here for you," he promised her. "we're doing this together."

in that moment, rowan knew, they were going to take it step by step, and they were going to do it together.

"give me five minutes, i'm coming," saroyah tinker, defenseman for the toronto six and one of rowan's closest friends, said as soon as she picked up.

"i've been here for ten minutes," rowan groaned, tapping her steering wheel. "the desk guy is giving me a dirty look."

"also, i'm hungry," elain chuli, goalie for the toronto six, added from the back seat.

"didn't you eat a grilled cheese for breakfast?" emma woods asked.

shiann darkangelo, captain of the team, rolled her eyes with a little smile on her face.

rowan, saroyah, elain, emma and shiann were the first few confirmed members the of the phf's newest team - the toronto six. the inaugral season was going to take place next year, but the team was coming together already.

the five girls had been invited to the toronto marlies camp, to learn and teach new drills and practice with the team. it wasn't the maple leafs or the nhl, but it was still a big deal to them. and if there was one thing rowan hated, it was being late.

"i'm here," saroyah announced, getting into the passenger seat. "okay, we can go now."

"if you were any later, i'm pretty sure rowan would've left you," shiann laughed, causing the other girls to giggle as well.

"i was thinking about it," rowan admitted, turning onto the familiar toronto roads and making her way to the marlies training facility.

the girls sang along to rowan's playlist, made jokes, and laughed as they made their way. finally, rowan reverse parked into the parking lot.

"you should learn to forward park," emma commented, opening the trunk to grab her bag and gear. "there's gonna be a day where you can't reverse park into an empty spot."

"unlikely," rowan grinned, grabbing her own bag. "and at least i can park, not like the rest of you."

"it's not that we hate parking, we hate driving in the city," elain corrected.

"traffic's a pain," saroyah agreed.

emma and shiann nodded in agreement.

rowan stayed silent. she loved toronto because she made it her home. there was kelowna, there was montreal, but those were places her family had taken her. she loved them, yeah. but toronto was where hockey had taken her, and she chose it. so she made herself love every part of the city - even the dreadful traffic.

eventually, the girls had changed into their hockey gear, switching topics to different drills they wanted to try out, to moves they wanted to perform on the ice. they were hockey players after all, their conversations didn't go far from the sport for long.

"welcome," an older man walked up to them. "you guys must be from the toronto six, correct?"

they exchanged introductions, before making their way on the ice. pucks were littered on the ice, along with materials for puck handling drills.

"you guys can start to get comfortable on the ice," he told them. "the guys should be getting on the ice soon."

as if summoned, one of the marlies goalies began skating onto the ice.

"joe, over here!" the older man waved him over. he turned to the girls, "this is joseph woll, our rookie goalie. joe, these are players from the toronto six."

they took turns introducing themselves.

"rowan price," she nodded in the goalie's direction, smiling softly.

she always had a bit of a soft spot for goalies, mainly because of her uncle. and this goalie was a rookie, which made him even more endearing.

"it's nice to meet you guys," he smiled at them, before making his way to the net.

the other marlies players slowly made their way onto the ice, dropping by the girls to talk different drills.

rowan stuck to some puck handling drills, impressing some of the marlies players.

"have you tried shooting on one of the guys yet?" trevor moore, one of the marlies players asked.

"nah, not yet," rowan shook her head. "don't want to embarrass anyone this early in practice."

"ah don't worry about that," he laughed. "light 'em up all you want."

rowan grinned a little, finishing up her stick handling drill before skating off to where emma was. the two girls talked about some of the new drills they'd tried out, and how they were thinking of implementing those in their game.

rowan kept her eyes on the rookie goalie, number 35: joseph woll. he was pretty good, stopping a number of shots. he made little movements, tracking the puck long after he cleared it. the way he played seemed so familiar to her, but she was pretty sure she'd never seen him before today. it was weird.

"you should try shooting on him," emma told her. "he's pretty good for a rookie."

rowan nodded at the second statement, before grabbing a puck and getting ready to go against him. she felt like she was ten years old and back in her driveway, going 1v1 against her uncle after school.

she held the puck until the last second, before letting it go, right past his glove and in the net.

emma cheered at the goal, skating over to hug rowan.

rowan laughed at her excitement, continuing with a few more drills. she talked with different players, practicing new drills she never even heard of. she scored a few more goals on the different goalies, before skating over to the rookie she couldn't stop thinking about.

"joseph, right?" she asked, making her way to him as he stretched out. "you were great in net, you sure you're just a rookie?"

he laughed, taking his helmet off and putting it on the bench. the practice was nearly over anyways.

he has really pretty eyes, rowan noticed. she blinked, surprised by her train of thoughts.

"i'm just a rookie," joseph promised. "and call me joe. you were insane out there, by the way. i had no idea which way you were going to shoot until the shot was in the back of the net."

rowan laughed a little, "thanks. i grew up playing hockey against my uncle, so i had to develop a pretty quick release. the way you track the puck is good, it goes against my release. but i'm a little more familiar playing with goalies who track the puck that way."

"i actually learnt that from watching carey price play," he told her. "he was my favourite player growing up."

rowan stared at him, laughing a little bit. "yeah, he was mine too."

"seriously?" joe asked, doing a double take. "a goalie?"

"a goalie," she agreed. "he was my favourite. after him, i'll take sidney crosby. but carey price was my favourite player. still is. it's why i wear the same number."

she turned around, showing him the 'price/31' jersey she was wearing. joe blinked, realizing a few things at once.

"carey price is your uncle?" he asked, an almost awestruck expression on his face. "oh- that's so cool!"

"yeah," she agreed, knowing that her uncle was one of the coolest goalies of all time. she had a feeling this rookie could turn into something himself. "it's really cool."

wait omg do rowan and joe adopt?? that would be so cool

they have different options to still have biological children, like ivf, but i think ultimately, the two decide against it. there are still chances of complications and they decide it's okay not to go through with it.

rowan gets a pamphlet at the doctor's after one of her appointments, for adoption and that's when she starts looking at it as a real option. she brings it up to joe and the two take the decision to adopt instead. it's a long process, but they get in touch with a pregnant teen who's looking for a family to take in her future baby. after a few meetings, rowan and joe want to go ahead, and the mom also wants to go ahead. they're in contact for the rest of the pregnancy, and she gives birth to a baby girl.

as soon as they meet her, they immediately fall in love (send in baby name ideas). joe is the cutest girl dad and rowan's the best role model for the baby.

they adopt three kids in total - one boy, and then another girl.

who are the girls rooting for?

playoffs wise?

buttercup: the avalanche are probably her first choice because of nate. but she's also kind of rooting for the leafs because of mitch. but it's the avs first no matter what. and other teams go in and out. the pens aren't in again, so she's kind of okay with whatever.

peanut: leafs. they're the only team she actually cares about (she likes her uncles, but she's a one team girl). but like, she's okay if the canucks do good too.

delilah: the panthers, because they're the only team she knows enough to care about.

rowan: obviously the leafs, but also kind of the canucks because she's from b.c. but pwhl toronto just clinched so she's a little more focused on her own playoffs.

meet rowan (pricey shots and brick wolls au!)

rowan price, niece of nhl goaltender carey price, was born on october 24th, 1998 to carey price's older brother noah price (oc) and his wife of the time, anna price.

pre-rowan notes:

noah price is the older brother of carey price by ten years, making him 46 years old at the start of this au. he was born in vancouver, b.c., and began playing hockey since he could walk. he loved all positions, but he usually played forward. there were a few years where he had to play defense, and he was okay at it. because of that, he missed some of his developmental years, and wasn't good enough to be a professional hockey player (he was good at forward, he could play defense, but he didn't have anything he excelled that)

noah tried to be very present in his siblings' lives because he was much older than them and he was scared to miss out on their lives. carey looked up to him a lot growing up.

noah and anna met in high school, married soon after, and had rowan at around 21/22. she has three little brothers: jadon (2 years younger than her), harley (4 years younger than her), and riley (8 years younger than her).

rowan moved to montreal when she was really young, when her uncle began playing for montreal, because her dad decided to follow him there. they went back to b.c. for the summers, but she went to school in montreal and can speak french fluently.

she gets along very well with her uncle carey, he's about 11 years older than her. she grew up shooting pucks against him, which they both say made them better players (carey says she's an excellent shooter, and rowan says he's the best goalie)

she grew up playing center, and can play wing, but prefers center (she likes faceoffs). rowan became well known for being carey price's niece when she was around 10 years old. everyone thought she was going to be the next best goalie, until they realized she played center, which threw them for a loop.

but then her stats were released, and media began reporting the next greatest female hockey player. she was being compared to hayley wickenheiser, marie-philip poulin - even players like ovi, with the way her shot and quick release was. she kept her socials private (still has those accounts) and made specific public accounts to share with the public.

she went viral on tiktok, becoming a sort of influencer on instagram/tiktok by the time she was 20/21.

at 19 years old, she was invited to team canada's hockey camp for the pyeongchang 2018 winter olympics and made the roster as the youngest player on the team. she scored 8 goals in total, one hat-trick, and had four assists. she ended the olympics having the most points in the tournament, but team canada fell short to the u.s. in the finals.

after finishing high school, she began studying at uoft, playing for their women's hockey team. she was also playing professionally for the toronto furies for two years while studying because it was the only thing she could do. after the cwhl failed, when she was 20, she ended up signing a contract with the toronto six. she continued her studies at uoft and played for the varsity blues as well.

some said it was a lot of hockey, but rowan was scared to drop any of it - just in case women's hockey stopped being a thing one day.

she called her uncle a lot during that time, talking about her fears for her future in hockey. she put aside so many things to focus on hockey, and she wasn't even sure she would be able to play professionally forever.

the first year that joseph played for the toronto marlies, rowan was invited (along with some other players of the toronto six) to help with drills and practice. they had fun, going against each other and trying to outplay the other. after the practice session, she went to joe and was like "something about your play is so familiar, but i can't place it." and joe laughs, going, "well i modeled a lot of my play after carey price - everyone's seen him play." and rowan stares at him and just smiles bcz he has no idea how often she's seen carey price play.

and their story goes from there!

rowan was the first free agent to sign with pwhl toronto (before the draft). she was so excited that she was able to stay in the city that had recently become a home to her. and she's been going off ever since the season started.

she's pretty known, even outside of hockey (queen) - and joseph supports her all the time.

general au notes:

jadon, harley, and riley all play hockey, but none of them except riley are interested in going pro. jadon's actually an nba player for the new york knicks, and harley's in university for mechanical engineering (wants to work in f1). riley plays defense and he's 17 right now, entering his draft year this year. he's projected to go high in the draft.

rowan's best known for her clutch/pricey shots, which she almost never misses. she has a very good eye and is good at controlling the puck. she can get goals at the most needed moments - and even if it looks like it's complicated/coming at a pricey time, she's great at going through with it

rowan and joe practice against each other all the time, and riley joins them occasionally too

this exists in the same au as my other three main aus

woll wearing rowan’s jersey is so special to me🥹

because i imagine he just walks in, and once the first person he sees registers he’s wearing her jersey, they’re instantly cooing over how sweet he is-

because i just- that’s mr.disney prince, and he’s the sweetest as can be

he and rowan facetimed before the game, but they both had to go bcz the leafs had a game at 7 and her game started at 8 (et), so she had no idea he was going to wear her jersey. but he didn't even have to think twice, because that's his wife, and obviously he's going to support her in such an important game. so he grabs one of her jerseys (in his size bcz hers don't fit him), and he pulls up to sba wearing it.

the first person who notices are the social media managers and they're like "oh my god- wait, we need to get this on video." so they take some pictures/videos of his walk in, and he poses, showing off the back of his jersey too, and they post those pics separate from the team walk-in ones. and it's so cute that they can't stop talking about it between themselves and all the staff are just gushing over how cute he is that night. some of the wags notice too, and they're texting rowan, gushing on and on about how adorable her husband is.

rowan sees the pictures before she heads out for warmups and she's just so so happy because he's the sweetest ever and she got lucky enough to have him.

he's also watching the rivalry series game on the t.v. in the suite at the same time that the leafs game is happening.

Since some of the leafs were at the PWHL game yesterday, were mama and P there too? I think P would've been like "look it's ro!" every time she sees her on the ice

yupp, mama and peanut got rinkside tickets. mama had presale access and she survived the battle against ticketmaster, getting tickets for her, peanut, trevor, and mason. peanut has a few signs, one for rowan, one for mpp, one for nat spooner, and one for pwhl toronto. she was cheering for toronto during the game, and every time rowan had the puck, she'd scream "hi ro! ro, shoot it! shoot it!" and trevor would be like "p, she's behind her own net." and p would just roll her eyes at him.

goodness i just know when rowan won gold with canada the second she got off the ice she’s got so many calls, and none really push her to tears u til wither carey or joseph

EXACTLY! she gets really emotional when it has to do with them

the first time she represented canada at the olympics, she was 19, and they got silver. so none of the calls/texts mattered to her, no one except her family.

but the next olympics, she won gold, and it was incredible. a team canada vs team us showdown, like the rivalry series but with higher stakes - and they won. her phone is going crazy from the amount of texts/calls she has from nhlers, people she played hockey with years ago, her friends, and she's responding to the texts/calls, but it feels like such a blur bcz she just won gold at the highest form and it still felt like a dream. she'd been dreaming of it since that silver four years prior.

and then her uncle's caller id flashes across her screen, and she's so overwhelmed with emotions, she doesn't say anything at first. but carey knows she picked up, so she tells her how 'proud he is and how proud he always is of her, no matter the outcome of the games she's in. how she should savour the moment because it's always going to be special. her first olympic gold.' and she starts tearing up and she doesn't know what else to say so she just thanks him and he tells her he's going to let her go and enjoy the rest of the night with her team and that he'll talk to her tomorrow. rowan takes a break in the washroom to wipe her tears bcz that call meant so much to her - the person who introduced her to hockey, the reason she moved across the country as a child, arguably the biggest influence on her life, was proud of her and always will be.

joe calls her the next day - he texted her and knew she would want the night to soak it all in - and when she picks up, she starts crying just by the wide smile on his face. he's grinning like an idiot, wearing a team canada jersey (even though he's american) and he's telling her how great she was the night before. in that moment, she's just glad to have an uncle and fiancé who care for her that much.

rowan landed in saskatoon yesterday - ready to take on team usa in the fifth game of the rivalry series. she immediately hit the ice with a few of her teammates to practice and get rid of her plane legs. she called joe after she got to the hotel, and the two stayed on facetime while rowan went over film and plays, and joe built her some lego flowers.

today, he's watching the leafs game and has the rivalry series game on at the same time. the leafs instagram posted a pic of him wearing a 'price' '31' jersey - rowan's team canada jersey + number (he had to buy one in his size bcz her jersey doesn't fit him).

rowan and joe had a game on the same day: feb 23. joe was in laval and rowan was in toronto, which meant neither of them could go to the other's game. but rowan walked in wearing one of joe's older marlies jerseys, and they both had each other's game up during the intermissions

when asked about it post game, joe said, "yeah i just want to support her and be there for her even when i can't physically be there." and then he was told that she also had the marlies game on, which made him blush and giggle a little

okay so peanut loves hockey in any way, shape or form. this kid will take whatever she can get. she loves the team canada + team usa rosters esp, bcz before the pwhl, she used to watch the rivalry series. she meets taylor heise, sarah nurse, mpp, laura stacey, hilary knight, and a few of the other players with auston. she's so nervous, but also so excited, and she becomes besties with heise. immediately after that meeting, she runs to mama and tells her she wants a heise jersey.

she knows rowan price bcz that's woller's wife and rowan introduces her to all the other players who she's friends with. mama lets rowan babysit for like an hour because she trusts her enough and she knows rowan has more access to certain things than she does (since rowan's there for the showcase).

mama meets all these players too, and it's so cool for her. hilary knight is one of her favs because she's one of the coolest us olympians ever, and she's trying v hard not to fangirl, but fails almost immediately. rowan promises her she'll do damage control

rowan was in boston for the game against pwhl boston, and joe made it to boston that morning. he surprised her in the hotel room after practice, and the two went out for lunch at a nearby restaurant. it was really sweet, and he stayed for the game - dressed in one of her pwhl toronto jerseys and cheering her on.
