Princess Ella’s playhouse!
Tumblr media
This playhouse belonged to Princess Elisabeth of Hesse (1895-1903)
Tumblr media
The story of the playhouse is as followed:
When Ella went to spend half of the year with her mother, her father had a special plan. Grand Duke Ernst Louis of Hesse commissioned a little playhouse to be built for his daughter in the forest of Schloss Wolfsgarten (a hunting lodge in Darmstadt, the capital of Hesse). When Princess Elisabeth got back, she was surprised by the little playhouse and was so happy! When her cousins came over, they played in the playhouse and had so much fun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When she died in 1903, the playhouse wasn’t used anymore until her half brothers (Georg Donatus and Ludwig) started to play in it
Tumblr media
(Photo from @princesselisabethofhesse. Go check out her account for more in-depth information on this subject!)
If you go visit Wolfsgarten today, you can find the playhouse sitting in the same spot as it was in 1902.
Tumblr media
No one is allowed inside the house out of respect for its past visitors but there are photos of the inside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ella had immense fun in this little house and whenever you visit, you can know that you are standing in the same spot as Ella and her cousins and friends once did.

Fun question: Say do you agree GD Olga N and GD Olga A look alike? And that Princess Astrid Of Sweden( later Queen of Belgium) and Grand Duchess Tatiana look alike? Do you think The young Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark( later husband of Queen Elizabeth II) is a blonde version of Tsarevich Alexei of Russia? They say GD Anastasia looks quite similar to Lady Elizabeth bowes-lyon( later Queen of the UK and Queen Mother) as a child and teen do you think soo too? And the most famous opinion of GD Maria N looks sooo much alike to her paternal grandparents?
I think Tatiana and Astrid do look similar, especially as young children. As an aside, unpopular opinion, but I don't think Tatiana actually looks all that much like Alix. The eyes especially seem like all Nicholas to me! I can only assume the comparisons to Alix were mostly about her her demeanor and expressions, how she behaved and carried herself, or perhaps in coloring; either that, or my eyes/photographs are lying to me. Astrid's mother was a Danish princess, a first cousin of Nicholas II's, so it wouldn't make sense that Tatiana and Astrid look alike if Tatiana were a copy of Alix. There's got to be some Nicholas/Danish in there for it to work!
I also agree that Maria looks like her grandparents, Maria Feodorovna and Alexander III. She has the rounder face and more robust built of Alexander III but shares a lot of similar features with Maria Feodorovna, although MF's large eyes were brown and MN's were blue.
I don't personally think Olga N looks much like Olga A; to me their eyes and mouths are very different. Olga A had a look that was rather all her own. Olga N seems like a good combo of both her parents, especially if you look at photos of them as children.
I'm not familiar enough with young Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon to really say about Anastasia; from the few photos I can recall I think the largest similarity was that they both had bangs/fringe and they might not look much alike without that. Elizabeth B-L had a very round face--like Olga and Maria did--but Anastasia had a longer face IMO. I do think Anastasia greatly resembles young Alix of Hesse. Of all the children I think she, not Tatiana, looks the most like their mother.
I had never thought about Alexei and Philip. I suppose there is some resemblance, though I think Philip's face is longer and Alexei's a bit more round. I think he reminds me more of his Hessian cousins Georg Donatus and Louis/Ludwig. When I try to imagine what an adult Alexei would look like, I like to look at pictures of the Hessian brothers to try and get some idea. I think Alexei looks more like them than any of his cousins on the Russian side.

Princess Cecilie of Greece and Denmark (22 June 1911 – 16 November 1937) was by birth a Greek and Danish princess who became the titular Hereditary Grand Duchess consort of Hesse and by Rhine through her marriage to Prince Georg Donatus, pretender to the throne of the Grand Duchy of Hesse. She was also the third-eldest sister to Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark (later Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh) and the paternal aunt of Charles III.
The third of five children of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg, Cecilie spent a happy childhood. In her early years, however, she witnessed the Balkan Wars (1912–1913), followed by the First World War (1914–1918) and the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922). For the young princess and her relatives, these conflicts had dramatic consequences and led to their exile in Switzerland (between 1917 and 1920), and then in France (from 1922 to 1936). During their exile, Cecilie and her family depended on the generosity of their foreign relatives, in particular Marie Bonaparte (who offered them accommodation in Saint-Cloud) and Lady Edwina Mountbatten (who supported them financially).
The year 1929 was a turning point in Cecilie's life. She formed a relationship with her maternal cousin, Georg Donatus, Hereditary Grand Duke of Hesse. Around the same time, her mother was struck by a mental health crisis which led to her confinement in a Swiss psychiatric hospital until 1933. After marrying Georg Donatus in 1931, Cecilie moved to Darmstadt. There she gave birth to their three children, Ludwig (1931–1937), Alexander (1933–1937) and Johanna (1936–1939), before becoming pregnant with her fourth child in 1937. Initially distant from the Nazi movement, she joined the Nazi Party at the same time as her husband in May 1937.
Soon after, the princess and her family embarked on a trip to the United Kingdom, where they were to attend the wedding of her brother-in-law Louis, Prince of Hesse and by Rhine to Margaret Campbell Geddes. However, the aircraft in which they were travelling crashed in flames near Ostend, instantly killing all the passengers. Repatriated to Darmstadt, their remains were buried in the Grand Ducal mausoleum of Rosenhöhe on 23 November 1937.
