Prince George, Duke of Kent was born . . ◼  Prince George was born on 20 December 1902 at York Cottage on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, England. . ◼  His father was George, Prince of Wales (later King George V), the eldest surviving son of King Edward VII & Queen Alexandra. His mother was the Princess of Wales (later Queen Mary), the daughter of the Duke & Duchess of Teck. . ◼  At the time of his birth, he was fifth in the line of succession to the throne, behind his father & three older brothers. As a grandchild of a British monarch in the male line, he was styled His Royal Highness Prince George of Wales. . ◼  Prince George was the Duke of Kent from 1934 until his death in a military air-crash on 25 August 1942. #TheRoyalBiography The Duchess of Kent Katharine Lucy Mary Worsley was born at Hovingham Hall, Yorkshire, the fourth child and only daughter of Sir William Arthington Worsley, 4th Baronet, Lord-lieutenant of North Riding (1890 - 1973), and his wife Joyce Morgan Brunner (1895–1979), the Duchess of Kent did not receive formal education until the age of 10, she was educated at Queen Margaret's School, York and at Runton Hill School in North Norfolk, HRH the Duke of Kent met Miss Katherine Worsley, daughter of Sir William Worsley, 4th Bt. , while he was camping near in Caterick Garrison near the ancestral home of the Katherine's family's ancestral home, Hovingham Hall: The Duke of Kent's engagement to Miss Katharine Worsley was announced on March 8, 1961 at Kensington Palace, The Duke presented Miss Worsley with an engagement ring made from an oval sapphire with round diamonds on each side.The bride's wedding dress, designed by John Cavanagh on the recommendation of her future mother-in-law, was made from 237 meters of diaphanous white silk gauze, made in France. It featured a tight bodice, stiff neckline, and a full skirt with a 15-meters double train.She fastened her white tulle veil with a diamond bandeau tiara that belonged to the groom's late grandmother, Queen Mary. The bride was a daughter of Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark & a great-niece of Queen Alexandra. ◼ It was the last marriage to date between a son of a Commonwealth sovereign & a member of a foreign royal house. ◼ Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II), daughter of King George VI, married Marina’s cousin & fellow Greek dynast, Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, in November 1947, making that the last marriage between the Commonwealth & other royal families. ◼ On 12 October 1934, in anticipation of his forthcoming marriage to his second cousin Princess Marina of Greece & Denmark Prince George had been created Duke of Kent, Earl of St Andrews & Baron Downpatrick.
