Favourite K-pop Releases of September 2022

1. Oneus: Same Scent

Title: In a way this feels like the grown up cousin of A song written easily. I really enjoy the tropical house sound, the instrumental is gorgeous and easy to listen to, raps and vocals are on point as always, and I also quite like the lyrics. The concept suits the song perfectly, it's sexy, but a very mature and comfortable kind of sexy, mixed with melancholy. It's SOTY for me so far, no doubt.

Album: I'll say it, this may be their best album. The arrangements of the songs makes for a very varied yet cohesive listening experience, and then every song is individually great as well, there was not a single song I disliked. All of the b-sides stood out to me, but my absolute favourites have to be Stupid Love and Full Moon. AOTY.

2. Bibi: Animal Farm

I'm not familiar with Bibi and only stumbled across this by chance, but god am I glad I did! The song itself is beautiful, I adore the strings in the instrumental, and her voice conveys the emotions of the powerful lyrics beautifully. And then there's the MV, which is just incredible. I love this so much, if anyone would like to recommend me some of her songs, please do!

3. Maka Maka: I AM

Another artist I'm sadly not familiar with, but I really liked this song. It's so fun and instantly lifts my mood whenever I hear it. The style reminds me a little of Mamamoo's earlier work, which is always great. If I had one small complaint, it would be that their voices get a little overpowered by the instrumental at times in the mixing.

Periodic Rookie Groups Report No. 20

It is not that 2022 was not a pretty good year for rookie groups. It was – especially if you are talking numbers. Disbandments are down, comebacks had a strong showing, and debut numbers are moving in the right direction. The story of the industry, and more specifically, one of the hardest hit sectors, a triumphant resurgence in a post-pandemic return to normalcy, nearly writes itself.

And yet, getting into the details, I do not think that is the story these numbers tell. Context is important here. The numbers for 2021’s rookies are slightly skewed, given that last year saw an underwhelming number of debuts. This decreased the chances of multiple disbanded groups and increased the chances that the overall rate of comebacks would look better than in other years. As for 2022 rookie group totals, as I go into more detail below, the numbers are also slightly inflated due to a sudden explosion in project groups.

This is all to say that between the ongoing effects of the pandemic and new trends in group types, I suspect the industry may be moving away from the era when rookie group numbers ebbed and flowed year over year. In other words, expect rookie group numbers to be wonky for the near future.

2021 Rookies

Before getting into the numbers, a revision is in order. In the previous Rookie Report I noted that four groups had disbanded between January and June, including the male duo Play:Moon. In their case, their disbandment was the result of a technicality: following the departure of one of the members, the group by default became a solo project. As of September 17th though, with the addition of new member Johann, the project has reverted to a duo. Consequently, this brings the number of groups that disbanded between January and June from four groups to three groups.

Between July and December of this year, an additional two groups—one boy group and one girl group—disbanded. They are as follows:

BugABoo: ATEAM Entertainment announced via the girl group’s (October ’21) fan café that following long discussions with the members, they had made the mutual decision to disband the group and terminate the members’ contracts. No reason for the disbandment was provided.

SIGMA: The male duo (January ’21) is presumed to have disbanded as Chanhyo has debuted as a member of the boy group WeNU (November ’22), while Z-uk has been promoting as a member of the pre-debut group WE:A.

This brings the total number of disbanded rookie groups to five. Subtracting these five disbandments brings the total number of active rookie groups to 54 groups—21 boy groups, 30 girl groups, and three co-ed groups. Of these 54 groups, 72% or 39 groups released new music at least once in 2022. 56% or 30 groups did so in the first half of the year between January and June while 17% or 9 groups did so between July and December. 37% or 20 groups released new music in both the first and second half of 2022

2022 Rookies

In 2022, 76 groups—22 boy groups, 51 girl groups, and three co-ed groups—debuted. Compared to last year, this marks a 29% increase in the number of new groups debuting and bespeaks to a larger trend. That is on the whole rookie group numbers are better, or at least no worse, than last year. While boy group numbers have been slipping since at least 2020, they neither grew nor fell, instead matching last year’s total. Similarly, co-ed groups experienced a repeat of last year with three groups. Meanwhile, girl groups jumped 50%, making 2022 the second-highest year for rookie girl debuts since I started tracking debuts in 2013.

Lest this come off as too similar to a headline on a k-pop news site, which treats every event in the same overly positive register—nuance be damned—the reality of debuts, especially girl group debuts, is tricky. While every year sees the debut of project and temporary groups, 2022 had an overabundance. In fact, in addition to project groups like Mamadol and X4, almost 25% or 18 groups that debuted this year did so as part of Rainbow E&M’s Future Idol project. That project variously described as “an idol development project,” “idol fostering project,” and “global idol nurturing project,” is in plain terms a middleman. Rainbow E&M holds auditions to find trainees they then instruct in lessons in singing and dancing. Then these trainees debut as a member of one of their various groups. Unlike traditional agencies though, these groups are not the point. Rather the centerpiece of the project is the Future Idol Showcase where the groups perform for staff from various big-name entertainment agencies. These agencies then have the option to invite any of the group members to participate in additional rounds of auditions or to join their agency.

In essence, Future Idol groups are not meant to market the individual members to audiences, but to other agencies. This makes these groups a sort of limbo. They are both real groups and not, as technically they have debuted but at the same time marketed as potential trainees to other agencies.

As much as this particular mode of marketing gums up the numbers, none of this provides a strong argument for excluding any of the Future Idol Asia Groups. They are, as much as any of the project or atypical idol groups, part of the story of rookie groups in 2022.

Miscellaneous stats:

January saw the most debuts with the debut of 12 new groups: three boy groups, eight girl groups, and one co-ed group.

December saw the least debuts with the debut of only four new groups: two boy groups, one girl group, and one co-ed group..

For the third consecutive year, more girl groups debuted than boy groups.
