Innovative Solar Solutions
Solar energy entered the mainstream with the installation of solar panels on houses, but there are many more ways to harness its power. Read on to learn more about some of the neat innovations available and in development that utilize solar energy.
Grid-tie solar systems generate electricity during the daytime and send it to the public utility grid. The company then credits you for the power you produce.
Solar Panels
Solar power systems are a crucial tool for combating climate change and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. By capturing the sun’s energy and turning it into electricity, solar solutions panels provide a clean alternative to dirty fuels that are responsible for a range of environmental problems, including air pollution, acid rain, water shortages, rapidly filling waste disposal sites, and the destruction of wildlife habitat.
Solar panels are made up of photovoltaic cells that generate direct current (DC) electricity. When photons from the sun hit the cells, they knock electrons loose from their atoms. When metal conductors are attached to the positive and negative sides of the cell, the electrons flow through the circuit, much like a battery powers a light bulb.
A variety of solar panel technologies exist, including monocrystalline and polycrystalline silicon cells. Monocrystalline cells use single, pure crystals to create wafers that are then assembled into panels. Polycrystalline solar panels utilize multiple silicon molecules, which reduces efficiency but saves on manufacturing costs.
Solar Control Films
Solar control films are a passive solution to improve the thermal, luminous and energy performance of building glazing systems without facade alteration. They reduce extreme solar gains, control glare and moderate the amount of visible light and near infrared radiation transmitted through the window.
They are very thin polyester-based products coated and laminated with different types of metals. Their spectrally selective coatings enable less transmission of the sun’s harmful UV radiation and visible light while transmitting the desired range of near infrared heat.
These film coatings can be tinted in a variety of warm or cool shades and even mirrored to provide homeowners with aesthetic options that keep rooms bright and comfortable. They also help save energy by reducing the amount of air conditioning use during hot summer months, and they can significantly reduce heating energy usage in winter. Choosing the right window film depends on the needs and goals of each homeowner. These products are available for both residential and commercial buildings.
Window Tinting
Window tinting can be used to defend against harmful UV rays and mitigate solar heat, while also saving energy on your Phoenix or Mesa home’s utility bills. Unlike sun screens that obstruct views, window film solutions allow for unimpeded exterior visibility and are available in various shades to suit your preferences.
A popular solar window tint solution is CoolVu, which uses photochromic transitions to darken windows when it gets hot and lighten them when it’s cooler. This innovative technology can be triggered by natural sunlight or interior lighting and requires no maintenance.
CoolVu solar window tints reduce up to 99% of the sun’s cancer-causing UV rays and help extend the life of furniture, carpeting, wall coverings, paintings, and hardwoods. These tints are durable, resist fading, and won’t interfere with radio or phone signals. They offer a sleek appearance and reduce in-cabin temperatures by up to 45 degrees. They also won’t void your window manufacturer warranty.
Home Backup Generators
With power outages on the rise across the country due to natural disasters and weather-related events, a solar panel services generator is becoming an essential home investment. While traditional gas-powered generators use fossil fuel, solar-plusstorage systems like PWRcell capture and store electricity from either sunlight or the grid for backup power during power outages.
This enables homeowners to access clean, affordable electricity and reduce their electric bills even during times of peak demand. It also makes it easier to power up critical appliances during a short-lived outage, while the battery system recharges.
These systems have built-in transfer switches that disconnect your home from the grid during a blackout. They can also monitor power frequency to prevent unessential loads from drawing too much energy and tripping the breakers, making them more user-friendly than regular home generators. They’re also better for the environment, since they don’t emit any noxious fumes during operation. In addition to home storage, these systems can be used for portable applications like RVs and campers.

Home Solar Electric System
Home Solar Electric System Nerang reduce your reliance on the grid and help you save on electricity bills.
The first step is to assess your home's energy potential. Several mapping services are available to help with this.
The electricity generated by your solar system flows through a power meter and either stays in your house or goes back into the utility grid. Some utilities have varying rates that change as consumption increases.
Solar Panels
Home solar electric systems provide clean, renewable energy to offset electricity costs from the grid. Most electricity comes from fossil fuels, which create pollution that contributes to global warming and a variety of health issues.
To determine if solar is right for your home, first evaluate how much energy you use and how many hours of peak sunlight you receive. You will also want to consider potential efficiency upgrades before making the final decision to go solar.
Solar panels are most effective on homes that can maximize their sun exposure, ideally with a south-facing roof without trees or other obstructions. More complex deployments include motor-driven trackers that orient the panels following the daily and seasonal movement of the sun.
Solar panels don’t work at night or during inclement weather, so you will need to install a battery backup system (or maintain your connection to the power grid). Solar incentives, including tax credits and cash rebates, reduce system costs.
Inverters
The inverter converts the direct current from your solar panels into alternate current (AC) to power appliances in your home. It can also feed energy back into the grid or battery storage system depending on your set up.
It’s essential that your inverter is sized correctly to match the output of your solar panel array. A small inverter won’t be able to handle the power your panels produce, leading to inefficiencies and performance issues. An inverter that’s too large will waste money on idle current while imposing unnecessary loads on your energy system.
Some appliances like washing machines, water pumps and air-conditioners require a high surge during startup. Inverters with poor surge capability will struggle to power these appliances and may fail. An inverter with an internal protection relay can help reduce this risk.
Batteries
Adding solar batteries to your home can make your energy system more resilient in case of grid outages. They can also help you save money on your electricity bill when utility rates are higher at night or during times of high demand.
Batteries store DC electricity from your solar panels, and an inverter-charger converts this to alternating current (AC) that can power appliances. You can add batteries to an existing solar electric system or install them together with your rooftop solar panels in a new installation.
There are a variety of battery technologies, including flooded lead acid and lithium iron phosphate. Flooded lead acid batteries require regular maintenance to check their water levels. Lithium iron phosphate batteries are spill-proof, and they have an average lifespan of 10 years. Some batteries, like LG Chem's PWRcell, have a backup gateway that disconnects the home from the grid. This can be helpful for homes in regions prone to extreme weather conditions.
Electrical Panel
The electrical panel—also called a distribution board, breaker box or electric panel—is the heart of your home's electricity system. It contains rows of switches that control electricity for your home and major appliances like your washer, dryer and refrigerator.
Solar panels convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity via the photovoltaic effect. The DC electricity is converted to alternating current (AC) by solar inverters before it is used in your home.
If your home has a grid-tied solar energy system, excess power from your solar panels is pushed back into the grid to earn money through net metering. Your local utility company will send a representative to inspect your solar system and approve the interconnection. This typically takes up to 60 days. Before you choose an installer, request a detailed estimate for the total cost of your solar system—including labor, permit fees, sales taxes and utility fees. Ideally, pay for your solar system upfront to avoid any interest charges.

Winterizing Your Solar Battery Bank
If you live in an area that experiences below-freezing temperatures in the winter, it’s essential to know how those temperatures will affect your solar equipment, including your battery bank. This is something you should keep in mind when designing and installing your battery storage, as well as at the beginning of every winter after you’ve established a battery bank. Here are a few tips on properly storing and preparing your solar batteries for the colder weather.
Appropriate Storage Location
If the winters in your area are especially frigid, it may be a good idea to find an indoor storage location for your battery bank. While it is possible to store solar batteries outdoors, freezing weather could damage your batteries, so they should be protected from below-freezing temperatures. Look for space in your garage or a well-ventilated shed to store your batteries.
It’s also a good idea to store the batteries in a sturdy, well-ventilated battery box or cabinet. These structures can be insulated if necessary to provide additional protection from cold weather. However, you should make sure to consult a professional on this matter so that your insulation efforts don’t interfere with ventilation needs.
Perform Essential Maintenance
Certain types of batteries require occasional maintenance. Be sure that you are aware of your particular battery’s needs, and perform that maintenance as needed. Winterization is an excellent time to go through those maintenance tasks, like checking and cleaning the terminals and double-checking that the connections are secure. Check for any corrosion on lead-acid batteries, and check the water level on flooded batteries. Performing these checks will make sure the batteries are in the best condition possible to withstand the harsher weather coming.
Leaving on Vacation
If you’re going on an extended vacation, or if the batteries are connected to a vacation home not used in the winter, you’ll need to take further precautions for the season. You’ll likely want to turn off your inverter and all DC loads, but be sure to leave your charge controller on. If the system will be unattended for a very long time, be sure to charge lead-acid batteries fully before disconnecting them from the network. Lithium-ion batteries should be discharged to 40% then disconnected.
The good news is, cooler temperatures are ideal for long-term battery storage. Just make sure that the area they’re stored in will remain between 40 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit while you’re gone.
If you’re looking for a battery storage solution that will help protect your solar batteries in winter, Generac PWRcell offers a battery storage cabinet that is sturdy, reliable, and weatherproof.
