Today had been the shittest day in recorded history. Youdidn’t get any sleep last night because your parents were up arguing, screamingand occasionally throwing things. This had become common in your householdlately. Sure, they always apologized to you the next morning, but they stillcouldn’t meet your eyes.
If that wasn’t enough, whispers of your parent’sdivorce followed you wherever you went. It you went to a pretty small privatehigh school, so news traveled at warp speed. You couldn’t even escape it inthe bathroom, where you found two girls quietly discussing the matter as theyfixed their hair in the dirty school mirrors. When you revealed yourself, theywere quick to run away, red faced and embarrassed. But you didn’t blame them, not really. You knew that this would blow away in a few months, and that theywere only talking about it because they had nothing better to say. Still, youwished that people would come out and say what they wanted to instead ofwalking on egg shells around you. You didn’t know how much longer you can takethe pity-filled looks your teachers gave you.
Walking into the school’s lunch room, you scanned theseats to find your usual table. None of your normal lunch friends were thereyet, so you moved over to set your bag on the table. But before you could, someone stuck their backpack out in front of you, sending you and your bagflying forward. The contents spilled out in front of you and you struggled to shoveit all back into your bag in an attempt to get out of there as soon aspossible. You could already feel the entire room’s eyes on you.
And then everyone erupted into laughter. Looking up,you saw the backpack’s owner smirking maliciously at you and applaudingsarcastically. You scowled at him and fliped him the bird before putting thelast of your things in your bag and beginning to walk away.
“Oh look!” The guy announced to the room, his armsheld open in presentation. “We’ve upset the poor thing. How cute.”
“Fuck you.” You mutter over your shoulder, notstopping to give him a second look. He didn’t deserve it.
The guy nodded to one of his friends across thecafeteria. They ran quickly to the exit, blocking it with their arms folded menacinglyacross their chests. You rolled your eyes and turned around to face thedouchebag.
“What’s your problem, dude?” You weren’t scared ofthis guy in the least, but you still would have liked to get out of this withminimal dents to your social standing. The entire cafeteria was rapt in attention, waiting for his next comment.
“Oh, you’re a feisty one.” He remarked, that stupidsmirk dancing on his features.
“Just leave me alone. You look pathetic.”
He narrowed his eyes at your insult, leaning forwardas if he were about to spit acid in your face. “Why so aggressive? I guess notplaying well with others is hereditary. You should really tell your parents towatch out for that, you know, if you can pull them apart long enough.”
Everyone in the room took a collective gasp, theireyes flicking to you for your response. You started to fill with a mixture of embarrassmentand rage, tears forming at the corner of your eyes and threatening to spillover.
Before you could say anything else, you hear someoneelse sitting behind you get up in protest. “Whoa, that’s really fucking rude.”
Holyshit, was that Michael Munroe?
Sure enough, you watch as the senior class presidentpushed his way through the crowd of observers to face the guy.
“Oh come on, Mike.” He said defensively, backing awayslightly. “I’m just messing around.”
Shaking his head vehemently, he glared at the boy. “Bullshit. What makes you think it’s okay to say that to someone?”
“Don’t be such a pussy, man.” He muttered, though helooked down at the ground. Being publicly shamed by Mike Munroe was not good for someone’s rep and he knewit.
“Why?” Mike retorted. “You don’t have any problembeing a massive dick.”
The room erupted into laughter for the second time asyour class president mimed dropping the mic at this guy’s feet. He rolled hiseyes and left the room quickly, not even bothering to pick up his backpack inhis hurry to escape. The bystanders began chanting “Mike, Mike, Mike” overagain as he took an exaggerated bow.
Soon, the normal order was restored in the cafeteria, people returning to their normal conversations now that the show was over.Everyone seemed to forget that the little incident even happened. Well, almosteveryone.
“Hey,” Mike said, walking towards you with histrademark charming smile. “You okay?”
Suddenly, you found yourself blushing wildly, something that you almost never did. Though you rolled your eyes at yourfriends when they fawned over him, you felt butterflies rustle about in yourstomach. This is ridiculous, youthought, it’s just a guy. Just talk tohim like you would anyone else.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” You reply, forcing yourself to meethis golden brown eyes. “That guy was just an asshole. Thanks, though.”
“No problem. I’ve got to make sure my halls are freeof douchebags, right?” He punctuated his statement with a wink that made yourheart skip a beat.
Pushing your bag further up your arm, you prepared toleave. Before you could, though, he caught you by the arm.
“Do you want to sit with us?” He asked, gesturing tohis usual table. Everyone sitting there smiled warmly at you, bar a blackhaired girl you recognized as Emily, who was eyeing you suspiciously. “Don’tworry about Emily. She doesn’t bite… for the most part.”
“Well…” you said as you looked back to your own, emptylunch table. “Why not?”
“That’s the spirit.”
