Read In The New Year (athon)
Hey everyone! The title is correct; I’ve decided to host a read-a-thon in celebration of the new year. I know that this is a little last minute, but I realized that this new year my only obligations are for work. Like many of you, I’m sure, school doesn’t start for a couple more weeks. I thought, “What better time is there to get as much reading done as possible than the first three days of 2016?” And besides, how awesome is it that the first three days of 2016 are over a weekend?
This is a low-stress, low-requirement read-a-thon that only asks one thing of you: read some fabulous books to start your new year off right! Whether that means re-reading a book you’ve read a thousand times, continuing a series you’re already in love with, or discovering a new and amazing book that may just become your new favorite. I, personally, will be embarking on a quest of reading new books by authors I’ve never read before.
So, please, join me from January 1st-3rd (12:01 a.m. - 11:59p.m. in whichever time zone you reside) for some reading fun! I’ll be using #readinthenewyear to keep track of the read-a-thon. You’re invited to use this hashtag to announce your participation, post your read-a-thon TBR pile, and to share your progress over the weekend. Anyone who wishes to participate and wants to have their tumblr added to a list of participants may send me a message stating so! I’ll add everyone to a list on my own tumblr so that you all can check up on one another’s progress or to see what books everyone is reading.
Happy Reading and Happy New Year!

MOST ANTICIPATED  2023 BOOK RELEASES
in fairness, “most anticipated” is a stretch. I’m not totally up on upcoming releases because I’m not really in the book community like I used to be. these are mainly titles I found interesting in a quick search
the stolen heir by holly black admittedly the folk of the air series is akin to fast food for me. like it sustains me exactly as long as it takes to finish it, and twenty minutes later I’ve forgotten all about it. however it’s a friend’s favorite series and I’m looking forward to their excitement enough that it’s elevating my own
song of silver, flame like night by amélie wen zhao the cover is beautiful and I’ve been leaning more into fantasy lately. it’ll be a bit of branching out since I’ve not read anything else by this author
emily wilde’s encyclopaedia of faeries by heather fawcett another author I haven’t read and a cover that’s fun. I’m charmed by the summary of a socially struggling academic studying faerie folklore
the daughters of izdihar by hadeer elsbai it’s being shelved as lesbian and I’m shallow enough to be hooked on that alone. plus I love a good fight for your rights story so fingers crossed it fucks
vampire weekend by mike chen “about a boy meets what we do in the shadows” literally all this book has to do is be mildly good in the follow through and I’ll love it
clytemnestra by costanza casati I just think books about reviled women are something that can be so personal
Tumblr media
MOST ANTICIPATED  2023 BACKLIST READS
the golem and the jinni by helen wecker I read about 50 pages of this every six months and have never finished it. now that I listen to audiobooks, I’m determined to read it all. idk what’s stopped me since I enjoy it when I pick it up
sword of destiny and blood of elves by andrzej sapkowski I’m a good way through sword of destiny already. my witcher era never really ends but will shift between the show, the games, and the books.
cruel illusions by margie fuston it’s especially unfair to call this one a backlist read as it’s a very recent release. anyway, that noted, I just got the fairyloot edition and it’s so gorgeous. so this is kind of a vanity pick I’m hoping lives up to its presentation but vampires and magic and deadly games does sound dope
a closed and common orbit by becky chambers omg I was such a long way to a small, angry planet girlie when that was released only to then never read another in the series... planning to change that in 2023. I might even reread the first book because it’s been so damn long
saga, compendium one by brian k. vaughan saga has been tapping my shoulder lately begging to be reread and I definitely need the refresher before picking up vol.10
the ten thousand doors of january by alix e. harrow my favorite book in the world (top three at least) is the starless sea by erin morgenstern and no other book ever hits the way it does, but the ten thousand doors of january is always the first Similar Recommendation so it’s worth a shot

2023 RESOLUTIONS  + 2022 REFLECTIONS #readinthenewyear
I'm going a little wild this year and setting my goal to 150 books. for the last two months, I’ve read 3 per week on average. if I keep that up, then I’ll come in over 150 easy, so it’s not that wild but it’s still a huge shift from 2022′s goal of 24 books
2022 was a slump year for me. I read 5 books between jan + oct, with the fifth book read in july so oof. and most of my reads were meh to forgettable. though I did discover an appreciation for audiobooks, especially star wars books because the sound effects are so stupidly fun. my favorite books in 2022 were legendborn and bloodmarked!
other goals: • finish 2 more books in the expanse series • re-read saga and catch up with the new stuff • review at least a quarter of what I read (I’d aim higher but I’m being realistic) • sort through unread bookshelves, read them or give away • do a buddy read • complete a few storygraph challenges • read more nonfiction outside of just memoirs • every year I say I want to join a new book club. maybe this will be the one!

ring in the new year with a readathon!
posting on the day because I’ve been so sick all of december that I hadn't planned to make an event™ of it this year. but I have a stack of books & comics beside me plus audiobooks through libby, and reading is my favorite way to kickoff and end each year! so I'll power through 💪🏽
I’ve done this publicly once before and while I’ve updated the boards, the prompts and this post are largely the same as a time-saving measure. I’m sharing in case anyone wants to join in ♡
boards: one (pictured), two (blue/purple), three (grayscale, easy to read)
fills are focused on checkpoints along the way of reading + easy peasy pitstops when you need a break, rather than focused on what you’re reading, so it's friendly to multiple genres and formats! win by any pattern you choose!! this is all for fun & the love of reading

#readinthenewyear - tbr / goals
I mostly read audiobooks now because I only pay attention to them successfully while I’m doing other things (which makes listening at work really perfect) so I’ll probably skip out on my libby loans this weekend unless I feel the urge to gif
I’d do better with ebooks had I better self-control, but I’ll switch apps instantly, then constantly
that leaves me with physical copies
there aren’t any specific titles sticking out to me—lies! I wanna finish the princess and the scoundrel but between today and tomorrow, I hope to finish three book books and maybe 10 or so of the graphic novels I’ve been bringing home from work and just stacking up on my desk
tomorrow especially I’m gonna browse through all the litjoy and fairyloot books I’ve been completely ignoring and let one of those be a book book
tonight I’m making some hot cocoa and reading the first three graphic novels that call to me. it’s been a very long day, idk if I’ll be awake to tick off read at midnight but I will try!!

MOST ANTICIPATED  2024 BOOK RELEASES
I picked up a quarter of the books from last year's most anticipated. This year my list is smaller, but my excitement is stronger.
those beyond the wall by micaiah johnson the space between worlds remains one of my top can't-put-down books of the last few years. I was immediately obsessed with the premise and the twists and the harshness of the world(s) and pondering who we are beneath and because of our circumstances and who we’d be with a different set
the pairing by casey mcquiston bisexual exes literally catnip to me. send tweet
the prisoner's throne by holly black the stolen heir was one of the ones from last year's list that I did read! I liked it much more than expected. all that monstrousness, both inherent and constructed. sequel's gonna fuck tbh
Tumblr media
MOST ANTICIPATED  2024 BACKLIST READS
emily wilde’s encyclopaedia of faeries by heather fawcett this is one from last year's list that I did not read. just never found the right time, but I'm going to make time in 2024
book of night by holly black I've read exactly five pages of this book and it's already my favorite thing of hers. there's an immediate flood of color to the world and characters on those pages. this may be my first read of the new year!
the space between worlds by micaiah johnson I'm going to buy a copy to annotate and I'm hoping I'm as in love with it on round two as in 2020 because it really got me good then

update readathon progress see: this post ♡
finish 1 book around 1am, I wrapped up our wives under the sea. it was unfortunately disappointing. I don't mind a slow read but this was slow and tedious about it. horror elements failed for a lack of tension, and it just. never got Good
finish 2 books listened to the bbc dramatization of return of the king. I really have no idea what inspired me to borrow the series because as much as I've started to like fantasy, I struggle with committing to big books and especially older ones, but then again the dramatizations were bite-sized. I had fun getting that primer
read 100 pages / listen for 1 hour at the moment, I'm probably sitting around 4 hours of listening
2024 resolutions + 2023 reflects 2 squares, 1 post [x]
next up are a few she-hulk comics, a break to set up my reading journal, and then checking out what's hot on storygraph and goodreads giveaways

2024 RESOLUTIONS  + 2023 REFLECTIONS
As far as numbers go, gonna just aim for a simple two books per month. If I outread that by June, I'll up it. Not super concerned with a count.
I'm starting a reading journal, which I'm really excited about! It fits in my bag, which is genuinely so sexy of it. Been mix and matching templates to cater to my tastes as a reader. The big goal is to engage more with what I read. I always set a goal to review things, and then I don't. Part of it is that I'd rather just scribble notes to myself than arrange coherent thoughts for others. If the scribbling goes well, I may just become naturally coherent and start sharing!
2024 is also the year of Read Or Toss. Aka ROT I guess??? My book buying has been under control for a while. However, my shelves are still overflowing with wasted spending from years ago when I was bonkers. Each gets up to 50 pages to impress me or it's out. Easy peasy, let's hope.
Tumblr media
2023 was kinda weird. Haven't done the stats but my top genres might be monster romance and memoirs lol
Had a goal to dnf more generously and I did, so yay! No more slogging through tedious prose or bad advice. Halved my reading goal between the start of the year and the end, though. Means nothing! But it happened!
I did read more nonfiction than usual. Goblin Mode: How to Get Cozy, Embrace Imperfection, and Thrive in the Muck was my favorite of those. My favorites in fiction were The Murderbot Diaries (I've read four of them so far) and The Singing Hills Cycle. Both of those series are just really tightly told and I recommend!
Wasn't a bad reading year, just not a standout one.
Well, onto the next 🎉

🎉 that’s three bingos baby 🎉
it’s been a pretty chill few days. I’ve had the time to read, just not the energy to do as much as I wanted since I’m still a bit sick. today is especially nice because I’m home alone which is its own tiny energy booster
I’m going to gif for a while to catch up on requests and source blog stuff, and I think I’ll listen to the world’s worst assistant by sona movsesian while I do and then read vol.1 of lore olympus

2021 Resolutions 🥂 + 2020 Reflections
read 50 books
start using storygraph
read more nonfiction
continue series I started this year, like the expanse, the witcher, the shannara chronicles, also shit bro.. maybe things that haven’t been adapted for tv lmao ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
join an active book club. maybe scifi focused?? maybe queer scifi???
try at least a chapter of the million books I take out instead of sending half of them back totally unread
~ ☼ ~
2020 was shaping up to be such a good year for me with books! A third of my total reads were in by early March. But the only reason I’ve read anything since then is because we get to read at work when we’re handling curbside.
Which like... the alternative is staring at the wall so thank u for the forced motivation @work 😘
Most of what I read was forgettable though rip. I think I need to branch out, try a little harder to figure out what I like nowadays and go from there.
The highlights. Us Against You, The Space Between Worlds, Leviathan Wakes, Evvie Drake Starts Over. The week I spent inhaling Shadow & Bone for the first time, rereading SoC, and then topping it all off with King of Scars and The Language of Thorns. The one book a day breeze of finishing The Folk of the Air trilogy. Reading more romance than I have in my life. My temporary fixation on baseball in both fiction and nonfiction that was really just spillover from running out of Pitch fic lmao
So yeah. Mixed bag, mostly duds. In 2021, I’m hoping for more impactful, memorable reading overall.

readathon goals
I mostly don’t have specific titles, just the 100 unread books scattered around my home to choose from and a desire to close out my 2020 reading challenge. I even grabbed a ton of books from work last week too, which is good because they later pulled us back a phase or two and I wouldn’t have had time to do it this week.
Okay. So all that said, my goal is to read 2 books + 5 comics!
I’m probably going to stick to the piles on my desk here, but I’m not counting out anything on my shelves. Definitely starting with Spell on Wheels vol. 2: Just to Get to You. Pretty sure I read vol 1 the last time I did a readathon around this time. Aka years ago. It’s been an eternity, I’m really excited it’s out!
