SOS Children’s Villages in Chicago
Sep 29, 2021
Architects: JGMA
Location: Roosevelt Square, Chicago, Illinois, USA
Photos by Tom Rotisser
SOS Children’s Villages, IL
The design for the new SOS Children’s Villages Illinois and Maestro Cares Community Center exemplifies a unification of SOS’s child-fostering mission, with the surrounding family “villages” of the Roosevelt Square community. The prominent corner site along the active Blue Island Avenue, just south and west of Chicago’s downtown area, welcomes engagement with adjacent residential neighborhoods, while presenting a positive and compelling outward image to the public.
SOS Children’s Villages Illinois’s Roosevelt Square Community Center is a new single-story Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) office and community center with kitchen space near their Roosevelt Square Village property.
This center is an 11,000 square foot space that serves the children and families at Roosevelt Square Village and surrounding communities. Programs include academic, therapeutic, social, and recreational support; multi-use spaces for community members to connect to public resources and engage in training, activities, and events; and a signature culinary kitchen providing food and nutrition education, as well as job-skills training for the hospitality industry. In addition to the more than one hundred children and families cared for by SOS Illinois, more than 5,000 people from the surrounding neighborhoods are served by the center.
JGMA’s design is a physical manifestation of the forward-thinking nature of the SOS Children’s Villages organization. In the roof, solar panels are located to generate direct electricity to the center, reducing electricity costs and CO2 emissions. Inside the blue corrugated metal panel, the one-story building creates a dialogue which is fostered between private programming, administrative and counseling offices, and more open, collective, and communal programs: group computer, study areas, community event space, and a learning kitchen.
SOS Children’s Villages Illinois is served by public transportation (CTA 60 bus and Blue and Pink rapid transit line stations), automobile, bicycle, and pedestrian access. Through these many modes of accessing the new location, the SOS Children’s Villages participates in and augments the vibrancy of the existing neighborhood.
Processional approaches to the building through a public plaza and community gardens also contribute to a sense of arrival, while establishing a positive street presence, clear site circulation, and community-oriented outdoor gathering. Ultimately, this new center facilitates and encourages community interaction, while providing for safe and comfortable facilities for children, families, and staff.

About JGMA JGMA profoundly believes that architecture has an innate ability to transform people and places. The focus of their work has been in Chicago’s diverse communities, where each of the typologies that they work on faces similar challenges of public architecture and its representational character. They proudly work in community areas that are unaccustomed to receiving architecture of quality; places where people feel forgotten; neighborhoods where neighbors feel like they are not cared for.
JGMA believes that every design scenario is unique, and that each project should be approached with a solution tailored for that community. Through the amplification of culture, empowering of community members, and creating appropriate vibrancy, their design solutions aim to become beacons of the true dynamic nature of places. They intend to reflect and project the values and personalities embodied in those who will ultimately utilize these spaces daily.
JGMA always tests and researches ideas for the sake of making innovative, appropriate, and unique solutions for the betterment of people’s lives. In their explorations, they find that unexpected and delightful surprises can emerge from the amalgamation of rigorous research, creative investigations in form, space, and materiality, and keen observation. They pride themselves on employing high design principles to empower and instill all communities with a democratic sense of dignity and pride.

Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School Expansion
Architects: Wheeler Kearns Architects
Location: Chicago, Illinois, USA
For years, Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School (BZAEDS) and Anshe Emet Synagogue shared a small, inconspicuous entrance from their parking lot. This expansion is an opportunity for the school to provide a secure, welcoming entrance dedicated for students.
The building expresses the school’s unique identity, looks outward to their community, neighborhood, and beyond, and celebrates BZAEDS’s religious and cultural heritage and deep connections to the Synagogue. The addition embeds timeless Jewish principles and ideas into the structure and experience of the building, while providing an efficient, sustainable innovative learning environment for future generations.
The new entry for BZAEDS draws in its visitors and students via a gracious plaza, inviting loggia, and daylight-filled security vestibule. Immediately beyond the vestibule they can see and experience activity happening all around them: students holding religious classes in the “Makom Rina” or Place of Joy, students playing in the outdoor field and play areas, faculty and parents relaxing in an open lounge, administrators and staff meeting in the conference room, and students ascending a stair to their classrooms and gym.
The building uses daylight, open space, visual connection, and material cues so visitors can intuit their way through the building. Most importantly, the building makes all visitors, staff, faculty and students feel like they have a place to call home
Key Project Features 1) New secure, attractive and functional entry: Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School (BZAEDS) expansion establishes a new head and heart for an existing school characterized by an ad hoc series of daylight-starved masonry additions, constructed over time and in a variety of styles. The new building organizes this assemblage with a tall, singular glass and brick volume that anchors the south end of the existing school.
2) Expanded communal gathering space: For decades BZAEDS shared a cramped common entry/hall with the Anshe Emet Synagogue, lacking a dedicated school entrance and community space. The new glass-enclosed building draws in visitors and students into an airlock/security check-in, leading to a lounge, sanctuary space, administration offices, meeting rooms, and a gallery wall displaying student artwork.
3) Sustainability: The building’s small footprint, cubic volume minimizes the exterior envelope, an insulated cavity wall designed to minimize thermal shorting; a solar array produces power for the building and is monitored daily on digital screens throughout the school. Permeable paving throughout helps manage water onsite and deep overhangs shield the generous glazing at the ground floor. A VRF mechanical system provides on-demand heating/cooling through the building, while minimizing ductwork other than to supply fresh air requirements. Products of recycled, renewable, low VOC content abound, including ceilings, linoleum floors, tile, athletic field composition, etc. Lastly, all occupants walk through a landscape of boulders, trees and wooden elements; underscoring a more natural connection to the world

Lakeview Penthouse, Chicago Home, Illinois Real Estate, USA Architecture and Interior Photos
Lakeview Penthouse in Chicago
Jan 15, 2021
Lakeview Penthouse
Architects: Wheeler Kearns Architects
Location: Chicago, Illinois, USA
The Lakeview Penthouse is situated within a two-story mansard penthouse with stunning 270-degree views, this duplex apartment establishes a series of material layers that unfold around a J-shaped plan and create spaces between them.
Connecting the two floors is a sculptural stair fabricated from oxidized steel and glass, up-lit from an illuminated glass platform below. The stair, along with primary living and sleeping areas, resides between a polished plaster perimeter and a warm, millwork paneled core.
Curved exterior walls acknowledge the traditional mansard geometry of the ornamental building but re-interpret it. The plaster walls, detailed as a 3” thick shell, are revealed away from the structural concrete columns and are pulled inboard from the windows to lighten its appearance visually.
The reflective qualities of the polished surface indirectly illuminate the spaces and provide an ever-changing relationship between the occupants and their immediate surroundings.
A strategic lighting strategy helps manage glare from the windows during the day, and at night, radiates the curved walls with soft, warm light.
On the inboard side, gray lacquered panels and a millwork core define the kitchen, bathrooms, and other service rooms. At openings and penetrations through it, such as the entry, the kitchen, and thresholds along the corridor, additional layers are unveiled including flat-cut walnut oxidized steel, painted plaster, and decorative tile.
Highlights include: • A sculptural staircase made from oxidized steel and glass, lit from an illuminated glass platform below. • The exterior curved walls, detailed as a 3-inch thick shell, are revealed away from the structural concrete columns, pulled inboard from the windows to visually lighten their appearance. • Additional layers are unveiled in the openings, such as at the entrance, in the kitchen, and along the corridor, revealing an array of textures such as flat-cut walnut oxidized steel, painted plaster, and decorative tiles. • Lighting, designed in collaboration with Lux Populi, which helps to offset the glare from the windows during the day and radiate a soft, warm light across the curved walls at night.
