He might have been an enabler for most of his life and that doesn’t make him any better than how Tina was, but I think I speak for all of us when I say how proud I am for him speaking his mind at the end

As a little girl, Big Bird was always my favorite Sesame Street Muppet. If I watched the show fro ANYTHING it was that. When I went to see one of those live shows when I was like four, the one thing that I still remember is how happy I was to see Big Bird on stage. It was always a joy to see him, even when I got older and didn’t really watcht he show anymore. But when I got older and realized that there were people that I never saw doing these things? That was when I first heard of Carrol Spinney.

I was surprised when I found out that not only was he also Oscar, the complete opposite end of the spectrum compared to Big Bird, but that he had been doing both since 1969. I found old clips and it was.. bizarre. Big Bird was MUCH more dopey. Oscar was orange. But when I looked at newer stuff, I could see the vast improvements. Making Big Bird 6 was a genius idea, and was made by Spinney. In all the interviews I watched/read, Spinney came across as a warm, gentle figure who truly loved what he was doing. Seeing his story in the I Am Big Bird documentary outright made me cry. And in everything I saw, Spinney always said that he’d keep playing the bird until he couldn’t anymore. And he proved that.

Last year, Spinney retired. I was sad, but he was in his 80′s and had been going for pretty much 50 years at that point. Matt Vogel, who has since taken over Big Bird. had even said that by then, Spinney could only do the voice. He couldn’t hold up Big Bird anymore. He couldn't even do Oscar anymore. It was a well-earned retirement and as sad as I was, I was happy that he could relax and I knew that his legacy would continue on forever.

That’s even truer now...

I’m heartbroken right now. Big Bird was my childhood, as were many others. He taught me so, so much. But if there’s one thing that I can take away that Big Bird, and in turn Spinney taught me, it’s that even though it’s so sad that he’s gone and it’ll never be the same, we can still remember him and be happy that he was a part of our lives. Big Bird had to learn to do that for Mr. Hooper, and now we have to take that lesson and do the same for Carrol. We’ll never forget. It’s always gonna be a little sadder when we go back and watch old sketches or Follow that Bird. But his legacy lives on. Big Bird and Oscar will live on, as will Carrol’s memory in the same vein as Jim Henson’s. For that, I can keep smiling and look forward to future sunny days with Sesame Street.

Rest in Peace, Carrol Spinney. Thank you. That will never be enough to describe how grateful I am, but... thank you. Thank you for everything.

We take you from one iconic Muppet duo to another, with this pair from Muppet Labs. Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and his meeping assistant Beaker are two of the funniest characters the Muppets have to offer. Bunsen normally plays the straight-man to the routine, normally at the expense of poor Beaker's physical health. Together, they provide some of the best slapstick we've ever seen.

In the Muppet Labs, Dr. Bunsen's inventions usually get Beaker maimed or brutally injured, much to the twisted delight of the audience. Fortunately, Beaker has quite the resistance to the various lab accidents that befall him, leading to even more experiments. With all of that being said, we never get tired of this tried and true routine.

5 Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem

Golden teeth and golden tones, it's none other than Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem! Made up of Dr. Teeth, Janice, Floyd, Zoot and Animal, the Electric Mayhem have been the Muppet's house band since the 70s. Can you picture that?
