But TL;DR, Five-year-old George Beard gets bumped to the 3rd grade when he first enrolls at Jerome Horwitz Elementary School (as mentioned in Book 9). Due to this, George and Harold never meet in Kindergarten and, as a result, George becomes a sole, anonymous prankster, Harold Hutchins remains a quiet and timid artist, and Melvin Sneedly, witnessing the failures of the American school system via Harold getting bullied, becomes disillusioned with authority and begins inventing recklessly.

Chaos ensues from there!

That's the end of the Invention Convention though the arc is technically still going! I was really dreading doing this part even though it was so short because of all the kids and inventions I'd have to make up.

It wasn't that bad, but I don't wanna linger on it. Polishing up these sketches has been a pain though, and they're supposed to be sketches. I hope you'll forgive the actual disaster part being kinda glossed over, I think there's enough to imply the event was ruined.

In both the movie and the book(s), the Invention Convention really is just a plot device to get the boys in MEGA trouble. I'm more excited for the aftermath!

(P.S. George didn't actually sabotage any of the inventions, but that doesn't mean he's getting away scott free!)

I guess I’m working through the Redux Robotix version of the movie! Being as it’s an ‘origin story”, George and Melvin haven’t quite met and figured out their dynamic yet. Since George is in the 7th grade (see RR AU masterlist for explanation) and Melvin is only in 4th, George has only heard of Melvin Sneedly and his infamous malfunctioning inventions in passing rather than first hand.

Redux Robotix LLC is also probably known throughout the school, but Harold’s association with it is probably overlooked because he tends to let Melvin take the limelight whenever they debut their latest creation (it’s 100% a-okay by Harold! He doesn’t want the attention but he enjoys being involved.)

So George and Melvin probably know of each other (George through his newspaper distribution and Melvin through the LLC) and feel a reluctant sense of respect/comradery through their shared hatred of school. That is until they meet each other….

I’m working on like 3 different personal projects right now so this AU has taken the back burner. I have this planned to the point of the boys breaking into Krupp’s office in search of Incriminating Evidence(TM) but we’ll see if I can draw that far!

To Make A Long Story Short....

Yeah, OK, crowd shots are really hard. Not my favorite set of panels but I need to move on!

I know this part is confusing, but I couldn't figure out how to make it more coherent. Basically: Harold was showing off RR's inventions and tried to demonstrate a universal remote but he accidentally turned on everyone's inventions—thus disaster.

Also Krupp has evolved to his own color! What do the colors mean? Nothing, just that I'm not great at color theory.

George is red/pink, Melvin is orange, and Harold is green. Purple was for NPCs and pale blue was for background stuff. I guess Krupp is yellow/brown now.

Melvin is probably the most OOC in this AU because he’s been gifted 4+ years of friendship. That does wonders to yer development! But yeah, he and Harold are true friends in this; he cares! It’s just that he also (stupidly) thinks this is a good idea. What could go wrong?

Also I’m presenting the Invention Convention as the book version—which is to say it’s a glorified science fair where everyone gets a table to present their projects. It’s going to be a fun time!

Three boys are banned from participating in the annual Invention Convention; can you guess which three?

Melvin and Harold signed up anyways, George sabotaged their inventions, and Krupp busted them after the fact. Melvin and George blame each other, Harold is just happy to be there at all (but he'll soon regret that!).

Confiscating all of the Redux Robotix inventions, Krupp has gained access to Double-Agent Dolphin (basically Tattle Turtle but a dolphin). DA-Dolphin has video proof that George is 80-HD, the Banksy inspired prankster, as well as evidence that the RR LLC has been inventing even though they've been on a temporary ban due to the Invention Convention.

To give stakes to the situation, Krupp can and will implement these respective punishments to the crew if they cannot stop him from submitting his evidence to their parents:

separate Harold and Melvin in class - Harold's worst fear as he is afraid of abandonment and being alone.

a years worth of detention - Melvin's worst fear as his parents will be mad and all those detentions will go on his permanent record (he's not as vexed about the classes thing because he knows he can hang out with his bestie outside of school, but he IS still upset on Harold's behalf)

expulsion (and sentencing to a boarding school) - George's sole punishment, and worst case scenario because then he really will be friendsless, away from home, and forced to be around even worse and boring adults/peers.

It's bad vibes all around.

What will the trio do? Find out next time!

This is Melvin Sneedly, Harold Hutchins, and George Beard. Melvin is the kid on the left with goggles and freckles. Harold is the one in the middle with the T-shirt and bad hair cut. George is the one on the, right with the tie and flat top. Remember that now.

That’s the boys!

Aside from Melvin’s loss of bowtie, I don’t see them changing their attire too much in this AU. Also I changed my mind, George and Melvin would be rivals but both boys would still be independent pains in Krupp’s side.

George’s resistance to authority is because the school system hinders creativity and student imagination. Melvin’s defiance to authority is because he thinks he knows better than the administration and believes they hinder him, specifically. Harold agrees with both sides to an extent, resulting in him being totally on board with both parties' elaborate plans, at least unless they quarrel.

I see Harold being the unifying front for each faction: Melvin would be his best friend from kindergarten and George would be an ally he spends time with whenever he gets detention (either that or George bumps into Harold and recruits him in secret to join his student cause against Krupp).

I think the Authority-Event Horizon for Melvin occurs after he makes friends with Harold. He’d bear witness to the harassment Harold suffers at the hands of the school as well as the administration’s lack of handling it. It’d break his belief that the faculty (and adults for that matter) know best, and feed into his desire to make things better with his intellect.

RR!Melvin mostly follows the rules, mostly because it's convenient, and he rarely results to tattling, as he doesn't see it as useful anymore. Admin doesn't help the students, therefore they cannot exhibit proper justice.

When Melvin and George butt heads it's because they view each other as wasted potential. George thinks Melvin could use his inventions to help students in a more useful manner, such as overthrowing the principle or whatever. Melvin thinks George's antics are stupid and a waste of time. Harold really wants his two friends to get along, but he's a bit to timid to pull anything like that off.

Don't you worry, though, I have plans for these three in this AU....

They will be friends—! They will be! I have deemed it so!

I actually think when Melvin and George start interacting more, they will have a frenemies thing going on. I love the idea that they’re foils in the story! There may be a few times that they have to join forces and realize how similar they are. But they probably still make fun of each other, but that’s just friendly banter, right? Poor Harold is stuck in the middle of his two besties and their prattle. At least they’re getting along!

It took forever but I finally exported the sketch brush I usually use in CSP into Procreate. Now I can draw on the go!

Comic updates to be slower as the holidays come in but I am eager to try to start the next stage of the AU’s “plot”. Stay tuned! :D

And thus ends what I am lovingly calling the Office Visit Arc, or the "prologue"-esque comic to Redux Robotix! I'm going to try to tell this AU's version of events for the movie, but using a mix of book AND movie lore for it.

(The TV show isn't canon to me, I really didn't like it which is a shame because I really really wanted to!)

From here I’ll be skipping around the timeline to get to the more interesting bits! There’s some things I’m still keeping underwraps until we get there (like what comic the boys will work on, what will result at the Invention Convention, and where the titular Captain fits into all of this!), but stay tuned for more! I do have an arc written out for this five-panel comic format, but it comes a bit later.

ALSO, I've rectified Captain Underpants's existence to fit in the universe! An Event™ will occur and Benjamin Krupp's day will be ruined, rest assured!

I'll work on limiting my unneeded commentary, but, just in case you forgot, Redux Robotix!George runs a solo "newspaper" in lieu of the comics he and Harold make in canon. It's his creative outlet/pride and joy. Most kids around the school know about it (as he only keeps his pranking a secret using the alias 80-HD) and he makes 25¢ per pop!

Redux Robotix LLC designing their latest robit!

Harold probably still likes to draw superheros in-between the robots and inventions. He enjoys those fanatistcal elements, but he still doesn't know how to give his drawings names or stories. So far he just has Big Melvin (superhero Melvin) and Super Harold (superhero Harold) as "OCs".

He is trying to create a supervillain for a drawing, but he still isn't sure what design to go with or what backstory to give them. Maybe it'd be simpler to draw a dolphin instead?
