Some Manor Village residents staying put after eviction deadlines pass

She claims that her three-bedroom townhouse presently costs somewhat more than $1400 per month and that identical homes that have previously been refurbished are now renting for considerably more. While the tenants have the opportunity to return after the renovations are finished, McMahon is concerned that she will be unable to afford increased rent. With four boys, an ailing mother, and her own medical issues, she says it's not only a struggle for her house--it's a war for her life. The majority of the tenants that remain had until August 31 to vacate, but many say they're remaining because they don't want to face the Landlord and Tenant Board. This isn't the tenants' first fight. After hearing their concerns, the Ottawa city council modified the direction of the proposed light rail line to Barrhaven in June, avoiding the demolition of Manor Village and Cheryl Gardens. The scheme, if unmodified, would have expropriated 120 relatively low-cost rental properties. Residents and ACORN, a nationwide social group that campaigns for low- and moderate-income individuals, planned a "block party" on Wednesday to boost morale and persuade remaining tenants not to leave. Smart Living Properties stated in a statement that it requires to vacate to repair and rebuild the apartments, some of which "need whole new roofs and full interior retrofits." Some of the affected tenants have reached relocation agreements, and they have also provided "home searching services and moving fees," according to Smart Living's statement. The packages "remain available," according to the business. Smart Living stated that after the rehabilitation work is completed, the 111 freshly refurbished units would be a benefit to the west Ottawa rental market. McMahon, on the other hand, said she doesn't see why they can't stay while other units are being refurbished.
