Dude were you the one who recced The Tainted Cup like an age ago? I finally read it and i fucking loved it.
IT WAS I
and excellent, I'm so delighted!!! it's probably my favorite book I've read this year
I generally like all this author's books, but I thought The Divine Cities trilogy SLAPPED and held together like a motherfucker, even though it takes place over decades

The irony of this that I know someone who doesn’t like me is probably saying some fucked up shit about me right now. I’ll be alright though.

I'm sure you get tired of this, but you are seriously the only person I follow who has this problem with random mis-tagging. That's not a dig, it's honestly funny, but for real - you tagged a post from Foundation as Baldur's Gate 3. The mind boggles.
DEEPEST SIGH
why am i like this

yo, i read a tag of yours that said that the US police was the second best funded military in the world— what’s number 2?
*third, but yes!
re: military (and police) spending -- The US is #1 with $731B, China #2 with $261B, and then the US Police Force at #3 with $118B
next few are India $71B, Russia $65B, Saudi Arabia $61B, France $50B, Germany $49B, UK $49B
there are definitely other countries with high police spending, but as always.... the US gotta be #1...... on all the wrong metrics.......

"#the pale blue eye#this movie was ALMOST great" ooh tell me more! what did you like about it, and where did it fall short?
EXCELLENT cast - Christian Bale + Henry Melling as Augustus Landor + Edgar Allen Poe, respectively, were fantastic; so were my faves Toby Jones + Gillian Anderson in smaller parts.
The relationship between Landor and Poe is SO GOOD and SO INTENSE. crackling with understanding. they're in the middle of solving grisly murders and its serious and they're under attack and they know it and they're treating it with all the respect it deserves -- but they're sort of nevertheless delighted in each other's company? i loved that. they had some scenes I LOVED.
so we get like. two-thirds, maybe three-fourths of the way through movie and we start to drift off course a bit imo. the non-spoiler review is the end of the movie did not work for me, and soured the whole thing a bit
handful of spoilers for the last bit of the movie below, tw for sexual assault and suicide
i typed this up like three times, but frankly wikipedia was more succinct, so:
Thinking that the case is now solved, the military thanks Landor for his service. ... Threading together all the information that [Poe] has gathered, it becomes apparent that Landor was in fact the killer of the cadets. Poe confronts Landor with his conclusion.
It transpires that two years previously, Landor's daughter Mathilde was raped by Fry, Ballinger, and Stoddard after attending her first ball. Traumatized by the experience, she later killed herself by jumping off a cliff. Landor did not disclose this to anyone, but pretended that she had run away.
which is just. not my favorite sort of backstory! and, frankly, doesn’t work for me as a twist; I don’t think it really earned its place in the story when the rest of the movie doesn’t really have much to say about power, or class, or who gets protected and why, when that would have been such an easy thing to do. it skates right around the edges of these dynamics and then just keeps chugging along. the movie has absolutely no subtext of any kind to it.
now, im unfamiliar with the novel it was based on, so this might just be poor book-to-screen translation, but the movie did not quite satisfy.

its been a minute since I read the book, so I don't remember ALL the differences, but its a great show and a great adaptation, imo
