Book industry ups and downs
In Europe and elsewhere, the Covid-19 pandemic is still characterized by hiccups in vaccination supplies, and series of lockdowns stemmed against what is being termed a third wave of virus infections. Consequently, the timid optimism that international book fair organizers have tried to keep up for more than a year now has started to crumble again.
Book fairs down and virtual
Book fairs postponed from 2020 to 2021 and then again from earlier dates to later this year are now being canceled one after the other. Unexpectedly, the first book fair to shut down its physical show this year was the Taipei International Book Exhibition, scheduled for January. Due to the sudden outbreak of Covid-19 cases in Taiwan, TIBE had to be canceled for the second time, reducing its activities to a series of professional online forums.
In India, the Hyderabad and Jaipur literature festivals were the first to turn virtual, even as local book melas in Chennai, Kochi, and Guwahati maintained a physical presence despite the pandemic. In March, the National Book Trust and the International Trade Organization of India were compelled to stick to an online version of the New Delhi World Book Fair, a first-time experience. The 45th edition of the Kolkata Book Fair, postponed to July this year, may have to skip its busy outdoor event as well.
Brussels, Leipzig and Paris postpone to 2022
In Europe, the Brussels and Leipzig book fairs were the first to be reduced to a few literary street gigs, while organizers hope to resume their core activities next year. Paris' Livre Paris fair followed suit in March, stating, "The decision to cancel this year's show was finally made because it was considered unfeasible to mobilize thousands of people — exhibitors, publishers, authors, speakers, communities and ministries, partners from more than 50 countries — at a later date in the fall, which is still very uncertain."
The London Book Fair's fate initially shifted from March to the end of June, is still in limbo, as its organizers seem to keep to their late notice policy so heavily criticized last year. In November last year, LBF's newly appointed director Andy Ventris said he was "committed to making a final decision by the end of March." But on the last day of March, he issued a statement explaining, "We promised to update the trade about plans for the 2021 fair by the end of March. Given the continuing uncertainty around international travel, we are currently planning for all scenarios and will update with a final decision in mid-April."
The statement was made three days after the UK government published a detailed timetable for gradually easing the UK's different lockdown measures at five-week intervals. According to the timetable, the last legal limits on social contacts are to be lifted from 21 June at the earliest, depending on the country's vaccination rollout, the effectiveness of the vaccination program at reducing hospital admissions and deaths, infection rates, and the impact of any new coronavirus variants. Many industry professionals had already agreed in November that the June target dates for LBF's 50th edition were unrealistic. At any rate, for 2022, the fair plans to return to its usual spring dates.
Bologna, Jerusalem postponed to 2022
Given the pandemic situation in Italy, the 58th edition of the international Fiera del Libro per Ragazzi or Bologna Children's Book Fair, also scheduled for June, is expected to focus on the online-only events that are already being prepared and to announce the cancelation of its physical show shortly. The BCBF's organizers are already expanding its digital format, and mainly the Global Rights Exchange platform started last year. They are hoping "to support dialogue and international business throughout the year, helping publishers remain in constant contact and bridging the gap from one trade show to the next."
Israel's leading book fair, the week-long Jerusalem International Book Forum, has been postponed until next year while limiting its presence in May this year to a digital program, even though half of its population has already been vaccinated. Madrid's Feria del Libro proposes two alternative dates for June and September but is likely to be skipped this year too. So are most of the other book fairs in large parts of the world.
FBF rethinking re:connect – preparing for a 2nd digital edition
The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair is so far holding on to a physical event in May, although it cannot expect to see any international participants by then. Under the slogan 're:connect,' the Frankfurt Book Fair organizers are anticipating the improbability of a physical event this October. They are preparing for its second digital edition without participants on the ground. As far as we know, potential participants are doing the same.
In the meantime, inspired by the success of their participation in what they call FBF's "Fakefurt" rights trading platform initiated last year, a number of publishers and literary agents decided to organize their own 'digital book fair' before the dates that had been announced for the London and Bologna fairs. The last two weeks of March already saw such exchanges between Hachette, Pan MacMillan, literary agency Curtis Brown, and others.
Book sales up and down
Meanwhile, the book publishing industry has been less affected by the pandemic than was initially feared, at least in sales, but the situation remains highly contradictory. In most mature markets, general-interest (trade) book sales have been up over the past year, including audiobooks and eBooks, even as other categories such as textbooks, scholarly, academic, and niche publications have seen significant contraction.
According to a survey presented at the recent Intergraf visioconference 'Shaping the Future of Books,' the printed books market in Europe as a whole in 2020 saw "the biggest volume rise since 2007." In contrast, the Federation of European Publishers' latest report estimates the industry's overall revenue losses in 2020 at between 2 and 5% across Europe. In the UK, printed book sales grew by 5.2% in 2020 as compared to 2019. The Republic of Ireland saw overall book sales rise by nearly 10%, but, remarkably, sales of books by Irish publishers fell by 6%. In Germany, overall book revenue in 2020 was down 2.3%. Still, specific categories such as activity titles (cooking, gardening, do-it-yourself) were up by 5-6%, with more consumers spending time at home and eCommerce book sales booming.
France's book industry survived on textbooks and other professional categories, while the largest category, trade books, including digital sales, decreased by 3-4%. In Italy, trade book sales were up 2.4%, and all other categories suffered losses. In Spain, both trade and textbooks were down 4%, while its industry's still relevant exports to Latin America dropped by 50%. The book industry in Eastern Europe reported declines between 10 and 20%; however, this was not as bad as predicted half a year ago.
As we reported in January, US book sales in 2020 had their highest growth rates since 2010, with an overall increase of 8% compared to 2019, and some categories such as juvenile fiction and juvenile non-fiction increasing by as much as 11 and 23%, respectively. Within one year, Amazon's book sales revenue and net income have doubled, despite its initial deprioritization of books over other goods when the first lockdown measures led to massive online purchases of all sorts. In contrast, bookshops and small publishers are still suffering from the pandemic and lockdowns, and everybody in the industry is hoping that this will all be over soon.

Many still work in stores, selling stuff, but the reality is that today’s retail industry is powered by a variety of staff employees, gig workers and artificial intelligence. The changes reflect shifts in what shoppers want — lower prices and more convenience. Shopping, even in stores, now involves technology that is altering the way we interact with the sales staff. Here are six stories of modern-day retail work. — The Luggage Salesman — Sterling Lewis, Macy’s, Manhattan There are not many retail workers left like Mr. Lewis. He started at Macy’s 37 years ago and he’s still selling luggage in the Herald Square store. Retailing was not the career Mr. Lewis expected to pursue when he moved to Brooklyn from Trinidad at age 13. He attended college briefly, but dropped out when his son was born and he needed a job. He went to work in the Macy’s stockroom, racking up overtime to support his family. “You do what you have to do,” he said. Today, Mr. Lewis earns about $70,000 a year, which includes wages and 2 percent commissions on each item he sells. It can be tempting, he says, to immediately steer shoppers to a Tumi bag that costs $1,000, but that only leads to more returns. “I start low and come up,” he said. “I want the customer to say ‘show me something better.’” Mr. Lewis, 63, met his wife while she was working in the shoe department. Together, the couple saved up enough money for a down payment on a house in Jackson Heights on a corner lot with a backyard big enough for three fig trees, a grape arbor and vegetable beds with sweet peppers, garlic, collard greens and strawberries. Mr. Lewis wears a gold hoop earring in each ear and a blue lanyard around his neck to show off his membership in the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, which he credits with providing him and his colleagues with financial security. Would he ever encourage his 3-year-old grandson to work in a store one day? “Hell no,” Mr. Lewis says. “You can’t grow in retail anymore.” — The Robot — Wall-E, Walmart, Phillipsburg, N.J. Wall-E starts the day at 4 a.m., rolling through the aisles, scanning the shelves and looking for “outs” — any item that needs restocking. The robot has a long white neck, bright spotlights and 15 cameras that snap thousands of photos, which are transmitted directly to its colleagues’ hand-held devices telling them exactly which shelves need restocking. After it finishes scanning, Wall-E parks itself in a remote corner of the store, next to a bright blue sign that says “Our People Make the Difference,” and takes a “nap” to recharge its batteries. Wall-E works two shifts, seven days a week, in the Walmart supercenter in Phillipsburg, a former railroad and industrial hub on the Delaware River. Designed by the robotics company Bossa Nova, Wall-E is one of 350 robots at Walmart stores across the country. Their purpose is to free up employees to interact with customers or focus on other initiatives like Walmart’s push to deliver groceries to customers ordering online. This month, the store in Phillipsburg hired 22 employees and it is looking to hire 25 more. Employees have embraced the robot, said Tom McGowan, the store manager, because it performs a tedious task no one likes — cataloging out-of-stock items. (Walmart allows store employees to name each robot. Wall-E wears a name badge like every other worker.) Customers have different reactions: A few children have tried to ride the robots, while many adults ignore the devices and keep shopping. Some ask whether robots are taking jobs away from humans. “I tell them ‘No, I actually have openings,’” Mr. McGowan said. “‘Would you like to apply?’” — The Stockroom Worker Nevin Muni, T.J. Maxx, Queens For Ms. Muni, life as a part-time worker in a stockroom in Astoria can be unpredictable. Most weeks, Ms. Muni is scheduled to work either 12 or 16 hours, but she is often asked to come in on her days off. Ms. Muni, who earns the local minimum wage of $15 an hour, never turns down work. “I have to make ends meet,” she said. “Whatever job I find, I take.” An immigrant from Turkey, Ms. Muni, 52, takes multiple train lines to reach the store, leaving her house in Elmhurst, Queens, and her husband, who is recovering from a stroke, before 6 a.m. Hoping to save money one recent month, Ms. Muni bought a 30-day MetroCard instead of paying for single rides. But she ended up losing money on the card because the extra shifts never materialized that month. She has no health insurance, but manages to be resourceful. She recently had a cavity filled by dental students at New York University. Ms. Muni moved to New York eight years ago and recently joined the Retail Action Project, a worker group and job training program affiliated with the retail employees union. She has degrees in media economics and human resources management from a university in Turkey. But those skills are not needed in the cramped, windowless stockroom on the third floor of the T.J. Maxx., behind the men’s underwear rack and the bin of Christmas-themed pillows. Ms. Muni unpacks boxes from delivery trucks and arranges last season’s pajamas and dress shirts on hangers, for display in the store. Her co-workers in the stockroom include women from Peru, Ecuador, Morocco and the Dominican Republic. “We laugh. We talk about family,” she said. “My job is hard, but I love these friends.” — The Postal Employee — Eric. C. Wilson, post office, Greenwich, Conn. Mr. Wilson has watched the internet upend how Americans shop and communicate from a unique vantage point: the service window of the post office where he has worked for more than 30 years. When Mr. Wilson, 58, started in the business, his job revolved around processing letters, cards and flat parcels. But those have fallen off in the age of email and text messages, he said. Now, his window is bustling with a specific type of package: returns of online purchases, which have become an enormous part of his days. “We get hundreds and hundreds of those, especially this time of year,” Mr. Wilson, a father of two, said in a telephone interview as he drove to his home in Stamford, Conn. The change is a side effect of the boom in online shopping, which results in far more returns than purchases made at brick-and-mortar stores. It has been a boon for post offices and employees like Mr. Wilson. “At one time, they thought the internet was actually going to kill the Postal Service, but it’s been very helpful because of the way people order packages online now,” he said. Mr. Wilson’s post office will operate four or five service windows — up from its typical two — between Thanksgiving weekend and Dec. 24, he said. Sending packages to Amazon is a shift from handling letters but Mr. Wilson is not sentimental about it. “I don’t really miss it at all,” he said. “You just adjust to what the change is.” — The Influencer — While Ms. Johnson doesn’t technically work in retailing, she’s one of the many social media mavens who have become central to the industry by making product pitches to her roughly 83,000 Instagram followers and 355,000 YouTube subscribers. Throughout November — which Ms. Johnson, 37, calls “Black Friday month” — she estimates that she will participate in about 20 sponsored campaigns, in which brands pay her for certain promotional posts. She also earns commissions from retailers like Best Buy and Target when her followers click on a link she provides and buy an item. “At this point, what I’ve created has turned into a media and marketing company,” said Ms. Johnson, who lives outside Salt Lake City. “I’ve talked to multiple brands who said they don’t spend as much money on TV ads and have put it all into marketing with influencers or online marketing because they just get a bigger return.” Ms. Johnson, whose posts sometimes feature her 10-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son, started blogging about bargains a decade ago on a site, now sold, called Freebies 2 Deals, as a way to work from home. On Instagram, her calls to buy cardigans on Amazon and toys at Target are interspersed with date night selfies and relatable fare about parenting. “The people who follow me or watch my stories feel like we’re best friends,” she said. When she recommends a great deal or product they love, “it builds another layer of trust.” — The Quasi-Fulfillment Worker — Sherika McGibbon, Zara, Manhattan When Ms. McGibbon started working at Zara six years ago, customers seemed to have far more patience. “Today many people are in a hurry,” Ms. McGibbon said. “They don’t take time to touch and feel the material. They just want to buy it and leave.” Ms. McGibbon, who has worked all over the retail industry, including at the Gap and the now-defunct Daffy’s, attributes the change to online shopping, which prioritizes convenience over the experience. E-commerce has also altered Ms. McGibbon’s daily routine and turned her Zara near Union Square into a miniature fulfillment center. Ms. McGibbon, who earns about $16 an hour, spends the first part of the morning on the sales floor interacting with customers. After lunch, she reports to the stockroom and packs FedEx boxes until her shift ends at 5 p.m. The delivery service picks up online orders twice a day. Ms. McGibbon, 31, usually packs about 50 such orders a day. During the Black Friday weekend, her store expects to ship 2,000 orders. A single mother raising a 12-year-old son, Ms. McGibbon says she still enjoys the challenge of helping customers put together an outfit. As a hobby, she advises friends and family how to dress. “Stylin’ by Sherika,” she calls her consultancy. She would like to turn it into a business someday. “Retail is fast,” she said over the throbbing music at the Fifth Avenue store. “There is a lot of adrenaline. TV broadcasters and streamers invested $38 billion in sports rights in 2018, nearly double the $20 billion spent in 2012. Globally, TV broadcasters, and to a lesser degree, online streamers, fork out 26% of their total content spend on sports rights, according to a report published last Wednesday by Ampere Analysis and carried by the Hollywood Reporter. The market for sports rights has nearly doubled in the last six years, from $20 billion in 2012 to $38 billion last year. The U.S. remains the largest single market for sports rights, with a $19 billion annual spend, a figure likely to jump as new rights cycles kick in for the NFL, MLB, and the NBA. Ampere forecasts the top U.S. leagues generating $4 billion more per year in rights revenues by the end of the next six years. And in Europe, broadcasters and online players in Europe's big five markets – the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, and Spain – shelled out $11 billion for sports rights in 2018, double the amount from six years ago. European broadcasters and pay TV operators in the big five spend a third of their content budget, on average, on sports, compared to 26% in the U.S.

The program will see 16 emerging female leaders from around the world begin a month-long mentorship in the United States alongside top American female executives from some of the most influential organizations in sports and business. Including ESPN, executive mentors in the 2019 program represent: the Big East Conference; Creative Artists Agency (CAA); Google; LISC; Minnesota Lynx/ Timberwolves; the NCAA; New Balance; the NHL; Saatchi & Saatchi, Spurs Sports & Entertainment; the University of Connecticut; and the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA). The initiative joins such other events as this week’s espnW Women + Sports Summit in Newport Beach, CA and the recently-completed LPGA Indy Women in Tech Driven by Group1001 tournament and week-long symposium that promote women’s leadership, education, and advancement both in and out of sport.
MLS will officially award Sacramento an expansion franchise this week. According to the Sacramento Bee, MLS will hold a press conference and fan event in California’s capital city on Monday to announce that the United Soccer League’s Sacramento Republic FC will make the step up to become MLS’ 29th team. Sacramento has been attempting to secure an MLS expansion team since 2015, but its chances were improved at the beginning of this year when Ron Burkle, billionaire part-owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins, joined the Republic as lead investor. The Republic then received city council backing in April for a new $252 million, 20,000-seat stadium. Later that month, the Republic emerged as a front runner in the race to join MLS when the league announced it had been authorized to advance talks with the ownership groups of Sacramento and St Louis, which was officially awarded its own expansion team in August. If Sacramento is confirmed, it will pay a $200 million expansion fee to become the fourth MLS team in California. Confirmation would also mean that MLS has only one spot left to fill if it is to stick to its expansion target of 30 teams.
Tiger Woods has been the subject of countless articles, books, and TV segments, but for the first time, he will tell his story in his own words. Last Tuesday, Harper Collins announced Woods’ BACK, a memoir chronicling the golfer’s life from growing up a celebrated golfing prodigy to shattering racial barriers and rising to fame, then facing continuing injuries and personal scandal, to mounting a comeback at 43 years old culminating with the 2019 Masters. “I’ve been in the spotlight for a long time, and because of that, there have been books and articles and TV shows about me, most filled with errors, speculative and wrong,” Woods said in the statement. “This book is my definitive story.” No publication date has been announced; the release stated that BACK will be “the first and only account directly from Woods, with the full cooperation of his friends, family, and inner circle.” For the moment, however, Woods is focused on “The Challenge: Japan Skins,” a big money made-for-TV match with Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, and Hideki Matsuyama taking place at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club in Chiba, Japan.
Formula 1 eyes Miami to host its first-ever Grand Prix after reaching an agreement in principle to host a race at Hard Rock Stadium beginning in 2021. The proposed Formula One Miami Grand Prix would see F1 cars navigating a custom-built track around the stadium. Formula One had initially set its sights on a downtown track location, only to scrap the proposal in favor of Hard Rock Stadium, home to the Miami Dolphins, after local opposition. Concerns remain among residents over noise, traffic and pollution, though organizers insist this new location would reduce disruption compared to a downtown race. According to the Miami Herald, Dolphins and stadium owner Steve Ross will cover all race costs, including an expected $40 million custom track. It takes Formula One a step closer to holding a second U.S. race, a long-held ambition for the global motor racing series’ owners, Liberty Media. Since 2012, the sole F1 stop in the U.S. has been the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. A Miami F1 race would have an estimated annual impact of more than $400 million and 35,000 room nights.
ATP Media, the in-house rights agency for the global men’s tennis tour, saw revenues rise by 6.7% to $120.96 million in 2018. The UK-based production hub, which is also responsible for ATP Tour content creation, has registered gross profits of $13.57 million. The spike represents a 9.6% growth compared to the end of 2017. Broadcast rights sales, where ATP Media works alongside IMG, remain the dominant source of income. ATP Media also said it had benefitted from “favorable movements” on the euro and British pound exchange rates during last year. Broken up geographically, the UK operation generated $11.59 million in revenues at the end of 2018, while the rest of Europe raked in $31.91 million behind $77.45 million generated by ATP Media in other international territories. Among several of the media group’s high-profile broadcast deals, 2019 has already seen ATP Media secure an improved five-year agreement with Amazon Prime Video in the UK, which runs through the 2023 ATP season. In addition, deals were confirmed with Discovery-owned Eurosport in France and Sky Deutschland in Germany.
Finally, before a big game, it’s important for fans to get a Goodyear night’s sleep. The Goodyear Blimp has provided aerial coverage of college football games since 1955, and later this season will become the first non-player or coach to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Now, Forbes reports, fans will have the chance to stay in the iconic dirigible prior to the Notre Dame vs. Michigan game October 26. One-night stays can be booked through Airbnb for October 22, 23, and 24 in the blimp hangar in Mogadore, Ohio. Each night is priced at $150 (plus taxes and fees) to celebrate college football’s 150th anniversary. Guests "will have exclusive access to the Goodyear hangar, which is the size of 2.6 football fields, and a football lounge will be provided where guests can relax and watch some of the all-time best rivalry games in college football history.” Goodyear and Airbnb will also collectively donate $5,000 to the Cotton Bowl Foundation, which supports college football-related causes. While the blimp will remain on the ground, this takes “Air”bnb to a whole new level.
FOX Bet becomes an MLB authorized gaming operator just days before the World Series. According to Sports Handle, FOX Bet announced a multi-year partnership with Major League Baseball under which the online and mobile betting platform will become an Authorized Gaming Operator of MLB. The announcement came exactly a week before the scheduled first pitch of Game 1 of the 2019 World Series on October 22. FOX Sports, an MLB broadcast partner, has televised the World Series in every season since 2000. FOX Bet is the fourth sports betting entity to join MLB’s Authorized Gaming Operator program since the Supreme Court’s historic PASPA decision in May 2018, joining MGM Resorts International, DraftKings, and FanDuel as MLB official data licensees under the program. The partnership is the latest in a string of deals for the network’s nascent sports betting division. FOX is looking to go all in on sports betting – this partnership marks the third deal that FOX Bet has inked with a major U.S. pro sports league, including the NBA and a deal with the NFL through its Super 6 contest.
Ex-NFL star Warrick Dunn helps deliver 173rd home to single parent for charity. According to FOX Business, the former NFL running back helped surprise a single Florida mother with a new home Wednesday through his charity along with Habitat for Humanity and health care company Cigna. Warrick Dunn Charities, which is run by the former Pro Bowler, presented LaToya Reedy with a new home in St. Petersburg. It was the 173rd home the charity has given thanks to its “Home for the Holidays” campaign, which helps single parents achieve home ownership. Reedy told local media she had been working hard as a nursing assistant to provide a stable lifestyle for her 18-year-old son, but high rent prices and living paycheck to paycheck was getting difficult. Before Dunn became a pro football player, he was living with a single mother who worked very hard to provide for him and five other children, but his mother was killed before his 18th birthday and he helped raise his siblings while playing college football. Dunn sees his charity as a form of therapy to deal with his own traumas, taking comfort that he is helping others avoid similar housing and economic struggles.
Michael Jordan donates a huge sum to two Novant Health clinics in Charlotte, North Carolina. During a recent speech, Jordan teared up as he spoke about his $7.2 million donation to two Novant Health clinics in his area. According to the Charlotte Observer, The Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Clinic and a second facility expected to open soon nearby will serve at least 35,000 children and adults over the next five years. The clinics provide both primary health care services as well as access to social workers, behavioral health experts, oral health practitioners, and physical therapy. Jordan’s financial gift to Novant Health is the latest in his philanthropic giving in Charlotte and his home state of North Carolina. Jordan has significantly ramped up his charitable giving since he became the majority owner of the Charlotte Hornets in 2010. The Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic opened just over three weeks ago, and has already cared for more than 300 people. It is particularly important for Charlotte families to get the health care they deserve, as the city ranks last among major U.S. cities in enabling people to lift themselves out of poverty.

Four Top “Healthy Living” Stocks (WW, PLNT, GTEH, MED)
Without doubt, one of the defining trends shaping the coming decade in asset markets is an increased focus on healthy lifestyles. People are simply more health conscious. This isn’t because of some strange fad. It’s probably simply a function of an increasingly widespread understanding of how to be healthy – what makes the body work better, and how to integrate simple steps into your lifestyle so that you feel better, live longer, and have more “peak” time while you’re around. It’s an evolutionary progressive virtuous circle of knowledge, distribution of knowledge, and active assimilation of that knowledge. If weren’t the case that people were increasingly focused on valuing healthy choices based on improving awareness of how to manifest that value… that would be the strange outcome. As it is, the most obvious path is what we are seeing. And this has implications for investors. With that in mind, here are a few interesting names in the space that deserve some attention: WW International Inc (NASDAQ:WW), Planet Fitness Inc (NYSE:PLNT), Gentech Holdings Inc (OTCMKTS:GTEH), and Medifast Inc (NYSE:MED). WW International Inc (NASDAQ:WW) provides weight management services worldwide. The company operates in four segments: North America, Continental Europe, United Kingdom, and Other. It provides a range of products and services comprising nutritional, activity, behavioral, and lifestyle tools and approaches. The company offers various digital subscription products to wellness and weight management business, which provide interactive and personalized resources that allow users to follow its weight management program via its Web-based and mobile app products, including personal coaching products; and allows members to support each other by sharing their experiences with other people on weight management and wellness journeys. WW International Inc (NASDAQ:WW) recently announced that WW Health Solutions has been added as a new wellness and weight management solution to CVS Health's Point Solutions Management offering. WW Health Solutions aims to propel happier, healthier, more productive workplaces and make wellness more accessible. Joining the Point Solutions Management platform will enable employers and plan sponsors that use CVS Caremark for pharmacy benefits management to access WW Health Solutions with simplified contracting, preferred pricing, and streamlined eligibility and billing processes. The new offering makes it easier for plan sponsors to add WW Health Solutions to their benefit packages – providing their members and families with tools that will positively impact health and culture, and promote sustainable behavior change. Through the collaboration, plan sponsors can offer their members WW digital offerings, which are accessible virtually anywhere, to meet members where they are, helping them along their weight loss and wellness journeys. While this is a clear factor, it has been incorporated into a trading tape characterized by a pretty dominant offer, which hasn't been the type of action WW shareholders really want to see. In total, over the past five days, shares of the stock have dropped by roughly -3% on above average trading volume. All in all, not a particularly friendly tape, but one that may ultimately present some new opportunities. Shares of the stock have powered higher over the past month, rallying roughly 7% in that time on strong overall action. WW International Inc (NASDAQ:WW) generated sales of $400.4M, according to information released in the company's most recent quarterly financial report. That adds up to a sequential quarter-over-quarter growth rate of 20.4% on the top line. In addition, the company is battling some balance sheet hurdles, with cash levels struggling to keep up with current liabilities ($292.3M against $560.3M, respectively). Planet Fitness Inc (NYSE:PLNT) franchises and operates fitness centers under the Planet Fitness name. It operates through three segments: Franchise, Corporate-Owned Stores, and Equipment. The Franchise segment is involved in franchising business in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Panama, Mexico, and Australia. The Corporate-Owned Stores segment operates corporate-owned stores in the United States and Canada. The Equipment segment engages in the sale of fitness equipment to franchisee-owned stores in the United States. Planet Fitness Inc (NYSE:PLNT) recently announced that members and guests will be required to wear a mask at all times while inside all open stores, beginning August 1. Currently, all Planet Fitness employees are required to wear masks. To date, the Company has approximately 1,450 locations open across 46 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, and Australia. "As we continue to face the COVID-19 pandemic, amid an ongoing global health crisis, wellness has never been as essential to our collective community as it is today," said Chris Rondeau, Chief Executive Officer at Planet Fitness. "Gyms are part of the solution and a key element of the healthcare delivery system, providing much needed access for people to exercise and stay healthy. Given our leadership position within the industry, we believe it's our responsibility to further protect our members, employees, and communities so that we can all safely focus on our health, which is more important now than ever before." PLNT has had a rough past week of trading action, with shares sinking something like -3% in that time. That said, chart support is nearby and we may be in the process of constructing a nice setup for some movement back the other way. Over the past month, shares of the stock have suffered from clear selling pressure, dropping by roughly -9%. Planet Fitness Inc (NYSE:PLNT) managed to rope in revenues totaling $127.2M in overall sales during the company's most recently reported quarterly financial data -- a figure that represents a rate of top line growth of -14.5%, as compared to year-ago data in comparable terms. In addition, the company has a strong balance sheet, with cash levels far exceeding current liabilities ($610.7M against $180.2M). Gentech Holdings Inc (OTCMKTS:GTEH) is certainly the most speculative name on this list. But it may also be the most interesting. The company is on track to commercialize in a manner that it hasn't seen in the past thanks to its recent acquisition of Sinfit, a top-5 functional foods brand that pulled in millions in revenues in 2019 – for a detailed discussion of this move and its rapid expansion since, take a gander at the company’s recent “MoneyTV” interview, which can be found here. And it is making quick strides toward significant success in this venture, recently announcing that it has officially qualified for "Mass Market Retail", FDM and Military status at Europa Sports, one of the largest supplement distributors in the world. Europa Sports has been a leader in the nutrition and performance space for 30 years. This distributor brings a large US network to the table, with more than 14,000 active wholesale customers receiving products from six (6) major distribution centers, aggregating over a quarter million square feet of total warehouse space, producing a two-day fulfillment rate of 96% on new orders. "Mass Market Retail status with Europa opens up an enormous new marketplace for SINFIT products," commented David Lovatt, CEO of GenTech. "We have access to mass retailers and general goods outlets across the country - ie, Costco, BJ's, Sam's Club, and many more. As well as with Military Status achievement now, we will be able to sell directly into the Military based stores. This directly opens the door for us to gain access to millions and millions of new browsing end-market customers through Europa." That announcement was followed by the company’s move to sign a contract with Fusion Consulting Group (www.fusioncgpr.com), a leading functional food and sports nutrition distributor based in Puerto Rico. Founded in 2008, Fusion has become Puerto Rico's Top Functional Food and Sports Nutrition Distributor, servicing over 1200 locations in Puerto Rico, including Walmart, Sam's, Costco, CVS, and Walgreens. Fusion also has a distribution footprint that includes the Caribbean Islands and Central America, and is in the process of expanding into parts of South America. Fusion serves supermarkets, mass merchandisers, C-Stores, gyms, health food stores, and pharmacies, as well as other distributors internationally. When Gentech Holdings Inc (OTCMKTS:GTEH) acquired all of the assets, including inventory, revenues, goodwill, intellectual property, trade secrets, and trading relationships of Sinfit, it broke into the functional food business with a brand currently sold in GNC stores, distributed by Europa Sports, and available in more than 10 countries worldwide that produced over $2.2 million in revenues in 2019. "This acquisition has a tremendous synergistic element that enhances our current business model right now, with substantial revenues and a brand that vertically integrates perfectly in the GenTech growth model," commented Lovatt. "Since the outbreak of Covid-19, their business has done a great job of maintaining market positioning and brand momentum. Most of the business has been converted to an online model, which is driving a huge jump in Amazon and Direct to Consumer sales of their products. And we are now actively engaging our sales team in acquiring orders from physical store locations again." Gentech Holdings Inc (OTCMKTS:GTEH) could be set to finally put out some massive topline numbers. And the market doesn’t seem like it has given the stock enough attention given this shift in recent weeks. Keep this one on the radar. Medifast Inc (NYSE:MED) manufactures and distributes weight loss, weight management, healthy living products, and other consumable health and nutritional products in the United States and the Asia-Pacific. It offers bars, bites, pretzels, puffs, oatmeal and cereal crunch products, drinks, hearty choices, pancakes, puddings, soft serves, shakes, smoothies, soft bakes, and soups under the Medifast, OPTAVIA, Thrive by Medifast, Optimal Health by Take Shape for Life, and Flavors of Home brands. Medifast Inc (NYSE:MED) recently announced that it has appointed James (Jim) Maloney as Chief Financial Officer, effective July 20, 2020. In his role, Mr. Maloney will be responsible for leading the finance function including all aspects of financial planning and analysis, setting Medifast's financial and capital allocation strategies, and managing investor relations. He will serve as a member of the company's leadership team and report directly to Chief Executive Officer Dan Chard. "We are pleased to welcome Jim to the Medifast team as we continue on our mission to offer the world lifelong transformation, one healthy habit at a time," said Chard. "Jim brings deep public company experience, a strong focus on capital allocation and an ability to manage the finance function of a fast-growing, dynamic and complex business. He has been responsible for managing large operations for global companies to support business objectives and growth. He also has a history of building value, which will be important as we aim to deliver long-term sustainable growth through our differentiated approach to health and wellness." It will be interesting to see if the stock can break out of its recent sideways action. Over the past week, the stock is net flat, and looking for something new to spark things. Shares of the stock have powered higher over the past month, rallying roughly 8% in that time on strong overall action. Medifast Inc (NYSE:MED) generated sales of $178.5M, according to information released in the company's most recent quarterly financial report. That adds up to a sequential quarter-over-quarter growth rate of 4.6% on the top line. What Can You Learn While Being A Numismatist?

In my decades of working as a coin dealer, I have written a lot of sales copy. In the process of describing various items, I have had to dig into the history of the pieces or about the history behind what was selected for the artwork. In the process, I learned far more than I ever learned in history classes in school.
Just for fun, let me share some of these things that I learned while doing numismatic research.
Heller-denominated coins and currency. The first coins of the Heller denomination were issued in 1189 in the German city of Hall am Kocher (today called Schwabisch Hall). The first Heller coins were made of silver and depicted a human palm on one side. The palm represented the right hand of God. During the early Middle Ages, the depiction of God or Jesus Christ came to be considered blasphemous, so usage of these images on coins ceased. However, it was judged acceptable to only depict the palm. Another purpose of depicting the right hand of God on the coin was to intimidate people who otherwise might not trust seeing these coins for the first time.
Over time, these coins were debased. From about the 1600s onwards, all Heller-denominated coins were copper or mostly copper. They were also the smallest value coins in the lands where they circulated—in Germany, Austria, and areas of the modern-day Czech Republic and Slovakia. Although the denomination was eliminated in Germany after the German Empire was established in the early 1870s, Hellers continued to be used in German colonies such as modern-date Tanzania into the 20th century. Austria discontinued Hellers at the end of World War I. The final notes denominated in Hellers were removed from circulation in 2008 in the Czech Republic because the purchasing power was too low.
Incidentally, people with surnames such as Haller, Heller, or Keller almost certainly have ancestors from the German city of Hall am Kocher.
Strange allegiances and family feuds. Future Hungarian King Bela III was born about 1148, the second son of King Geza II. As such, he was not destined to become king of Hungary. His father made him a duke of Hungarian lands that included modern Croatia and Dalmatia. His older brother became Hungarian King Stephen III in 1162. At the age of about 15, Bela moved to Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire.
Byzantine Emperor Manuel 1 Kommenos betrothed his daughter Maria to Bela and gave him a senior court title. From 1164 to 1167, Hungary and the Byzantine Empire battled each other three times, partly over incorporating Bela’s duchy into the Empire. Bela fought with the Empire against his brother. In 1165, Manuel designated Bela to be his successor as Byzantine Emperor. The betrothal and designated succession were revoked in 1169 when the Emperor’s wife bore him a son, though Manuel granted Bela a lower title of “kaisar” (undoubtedly derived from the Roman Empire title of Caesar).
Hungarian King Stephen III died in 1172. Bela, after pledging to never make war against the Byzantine Empire returned to his homeland and was proclaimed the new king. As Hungarian king, his military forces allied with the Byzantines in some wars. He was preparing to lead his troops on a Crusade in the Holy Land when he died in 1196.
Eleanor of Aquitaine. This wife and mother of multiple kings had an extraordinary influence on the history of Western Europe. When her father died, she became the Duchess of Aquitaine (a major state within France), a title she held for 67 years. As a 15-year-old duchess, she was the most eligible bride in Europe. Within three months of her father’s death, she married French King Louis VII, serving as the French queen from 1137-1152. Their marriage was annulled because she was unable to give birth to a son, though her title as Duchess of Aquitaine was kept intact.
Eleanor then married Henry, Duke of Normandy, who became British King Henry II in 1154. Henry was her third cousin and 11 years younger than her. Over the next 13 years, she gave birth to five sons—three of whom became British kings: Henry the Young King, Richard I (the Lionhearted), and John—and three daughters—two of whom became queens (Eleanor married the King of Castille, thus securing the southern border of Aquitaine, and Joan married the King of Sicily). She was one of few people who were alive at the times of both the Second and Third Crusades.
Shipwreck of the El Cazador. This shipwreck changed world history. Dominion over the Louisiana Territory was transferred from France to Spain in 1762. In the 1770s, the Louisiana Territory fell into hard times because the circulating currency there was not backed by gold or silver. Spanish King Carlos (Charles) III decided to replace the fiat currency with silver coins. On Jan. 11, 1784, the El Cazador set sail from Veracruz, Mexico, with approximately 400,000 Spanish silver 8 reales plus a quantity of smaller denomination silver reales.
The ship was never heard from again. After unsuccessful searches, the El Cazador was officially listed as missing in June 1784. Had this ship reached New Orleans, it might have rescued the local economy to where Spain could have maintained its dominion.
Instead, when Spain could no longer afford to support Louisiana, it negotiated to transfer the territory to France’s Napoleon Bonaparte in 1801. Napoleon’s hope was to use the land as a major base of French expansion in North America. However, French forces were sent in 1801 to regain control of Saint-Domingue on the island of Hispaniola (modern-day Haiti) and ultimately failed. This led Napoleon to abandon his plans for North America, whereupon the Louisiana Territory was sold to the U.S. government in 1803 for $15 million.
Just imagine what the political landscape of North America might be today if the El Cazador had made it to New Orleans.
On Aug. 2, 1993, the fishing trawler Mistake’s net hit a snag. When it was pulled up, the net contained a number of Spanish silver coins dated 1783. The El Cazador had been found. Specimens from this historic shipwreck are now available at price comparable to other Spanish 8 reales from the era.

Modern Black Friday Work Force: Postal Clerk, Influencer, Robot
A postal employee who processes one Amazon return after another. A part-time stockroom clerk who works spotty hours for minimum wage and no health benefits. A social media influencer who pitches products to her 83,000 Instagram followers. A robot that scans the shelves at Walmart.
Meet America’s retail work force in 2019. Nearly five million people are employed in traditional retail jobs. Many still work in stores, selling stuff, but the reality is that today’s retail industry is powered by a variety of staff employees, gig workers and artificial intelligence.
The changes reflect shifts in what shoppers want — lower prices and more convenience. Shopping, even in stores, now involves technology that is altering the way we interact with the sales staff. Here are six stories of modern-day retail work.
— The Luggage Salesman —
Sterling Lewis, Macy’s, Manhattan
There are not many retail workers left like Mr. Lewis. He started at Macy’s 37 years ago and he’s still selling luggage in the Herald Square store.
Retailing was not the career Mr. Lewis expected to pursue when he moved to Brooklyn from Trinidad at age 13. He attended college briefly, but dropped out when his son was born and he needed a job. He went to work in the Macy’s stockroom, racking up overtime to support his family. “You do what you have to do,” he said.
Today, Mr. Lewis earns about $70,000 a year, which includes wages and 2 percent commissions on each item he sells.
It can be tempting, he says, to immediately steer shoppers to a Tumi bag that costs $1,000, but that only leads to more returns. “I start low and come up,” he said. “I want the customer to say ‘show me something better.’”
Mr. Lewis, 63, met his wife while she was working in the shoe department. Together, the couple saved up enough money for a down payment on a house in Jackson Heights on a corner lot with a backyard big enough for three fig trees, a grape arbor and vegetable beds with sweet peppers, garlic, collard greens and strawberries.
Mr. Lewis wears a gold hoop earring in each ear and a blue lanyard around his neck to show off his membership in the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, which he credits with providing him and his colleagues with financial security.
Would he ever encourage his 3-year-old grandson to work in a store one day? “Hell no,” Mr. Lewis says. “You can’t grow in retail anymore.”

Wall-E starts the day at 4 a.m., rolling through the aisles, scanning the shelves and looking for “outs” — any item that needs restocking.
The robot has a long white neck, bright spotlights and 15 cameras that snap thousands of photos, which are transmitted directly to its colleagues’ hand-held devices telling them exactly which shelves need restocking.
After it finishes scanning, Wall-E parks itself in a remote corner of the store, next to a bright blue sign that says “Our People Make the Difference,” and takes a “nap” to recharge its batteries.
Wall-E works two shifts, seven days a week, in the Walmart supercenter in Phillipsburg, a former railroad and industrial hub on the Delaware River.
Designed by the robotics company Bossa Nova, Wall-E is one of 350 robots at Walmart stores across the country. Their purpose is to free up employees to interact with customers or focus on other initiatives like Walmart’s push to deliver groceries to customers ordering online. This month, the store in Phillipsburg hired 22 employees and it is looking to hire 25 more.
Employees have embraced the robot, said Tom McGowan, the store manager, because it performs a tedious task no one likes — cataloging out-of-stock items. (Walmart allows store employees to name each robot. Wall-E wears a name badge like every other worker.)
Customers have different reactions: A few children have tried to ride the robots, while many adults ignore the devices and keep shopping. Some ask whether robots are taking jobs away from humans.
“I tell them ‘No, I actually have openings,’” Mr. McGowan said. “‘Would you like to apply?’”

The Stockroom Worker
Nevin Muni, T.J. Maxx, Queens
For Ms. Muni, life as a part-time worker in a stockroom in Astoria can be unpredictable.
Most weeks, Ms. Muni is scheduled to work either 12 or 16 hours, but she is often asked to come in on her days off. Ms. Muni, who earns the local minimum wage of $15 an hour, never turns down work. “I have to make ends meet,” she said. “Whatever job I find, I take.”
An immigrant from Turkey, Ms. Muni, 52, takes multiple train lines to reach the store, leaving her house in Elmhurst, Queens, and her husband, who is recovering from a stroke, before 6 a.m. Hoping to save money one recent month, Ms. Muni bought a 30-day MetroCard instead of paying for single rides. But she ended up losing money on the card because the extra shifts never materialized that month.
She has no health insurance, but manages to be resourceful. She recently had a cavity filled by dental students at New York University.
Ms. Muni moved to New York eight years ago and recently joined the Retail Action Project, a worker group and job training program affiliated with the retail employees union. She has degrees in media economics and human resources management from a university in Turkey. But those skills are not needed in the cramped, windowless stockroom on the third floor of the T.J. Maxx., behind the men’s underwear rack and the bin of Christmas-themed pillows.
Ms. Muni unpacks boxes from delivery trucks and arranges last season’s pajamas and dress shirts on hangers, for display in the store. Her co-workers in the stockroom include women from Peru, Ecuador, Morocco and the Dominican Republic.
“We laugh. We talk about family,” she said. “My job is hard, but I love these friends.”

Eric. C. Wilson, post office, Greenwich, Conn.
Mr. Wilson has watched the internet upend how Americans shop and communicate from a unique vantage point: the service window of the post office where he has worked for more than 30 years.
When Mr. Wilson, 58, started in the business, his job revolved around processing letters, cards and flat parcels. But those have fallen off in the age of email and text messages, he said. Now, his window is bustling with a specific type of package: returns of online purchases, which have become an enormous part of his days.
“We get hundreds and hundreds of those, especially this time of year,” Mr. Wilson, a father of two, said in a telephone interview as he drove to his home in Stamford, Conn.
The change is a side effect of the boom in online shopping, which results in far more returns than purchases made at brick-and-mortar stores. It has been a boon for post offices and employees like Mr. Wilson.
“At one time, they thought the internet was actually going to kill the Postal Service, but it’s been very helpful because of the way people order packages online now,” he said.
Mr. Wilson’s post office will operate four or five service windows — up from its typical two — between Thanksgiving weekend and Dec. 24, he said. Sending packages to Amazon is a shift from handling letters but Mr. Wilson is not sentimental about it.
“I don’t really miss it at all,” he said. “You just adjust to what the change is.”

While Ms. Johnson doesn’t technically work in retailing, she’s one of the many social media mavens who have become central to the industry by making product pitches to her roughly 83,000 Instagram followers and 355,000 YouTube subscribers.
Throughout November — which Ms. Johnson, 37, calls “Black Friday month” — she estimates that she will participate in about 20 sponsored campaigns, in which brands pay her for certain promotional posts. She also earns commissions from retailers like Best Buy and Target when her followers click on a link she provides and buy an item.
“At this point, what I’ve created has turned into a media and marketing company,” said Ms. Johnson, who lives outside Salt Lake City. “I’ve talked to multiple brands who said they don’t spend as much money on TV ads and have put it all into marketing with influencers or online marketing because they just get a bigger return.”
Ms. Johnson, whose posts sometimes feature her 10-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son, started blogging about bargains a decade ago on a site, now sold, called Freebies 2 Deals, as a way to work from home.
On Instagram, her calls to buy cardigans on Amazon and toys at Target are interspersed with date night selfies and relatable fare about parenting.
“The people who follow me or watch my stories feel like we’re best friends,” she said. When she recommends a great deal or product they love, “it builds another layer of trust.”

Sherika McGibbon, Zara, Manhattan
When Ms. McGibbon started working at Zara six years ago, customers seemed to have far more patience.
“Today many people are in a hurry,” Ms. McGibbon said. “They don’t take time to touch and feel the material. They just want to buy it and leave.”
Ms. McGibbon, who has worked all over the retail industry, including at the Gap and the now-defunct Daffy’s, attributes the change to online shopping, which prioritizes convenience over the experience.
E-commerce has also altered Ms. McGibbon’s daily routine and turned her Zara near Union Square into a miniature fulfillment center. Ms. McGibbon, who earns about $16 an hour, spends the first part of the morning on the sales floor interacting with customers. After lunch, she reports to the stockroom and packs FedEx boxes until her shift ends at 5 p.m. The delivery service picks up online orders twice a day.
Ms. McGibbon, 31, usually packs about 50 such orders a day. During the Black Friday weekend, her store expects to ship 2,000 orders.
A single mother raising a 12-year-old son, Ms. McGibbon says she still enjoys the challenge of helping customers put together an outfit. As a hobby, she advises friends and family how to dress. “Stylin’ by Sherika,” she calls her consultancy. She would like to turn it into a business someday.
“Retail is fast,” she said over the throbbing music at the Fifth Avenue store. “There is a lot of adrenaline. But if it ever gets slow, I got to go.”

Book industry ups and downs
In Europe and elsewhere, the Covid-19 pandemic is still characterized by hiccups in vaccination supplies, and series of lockdowns stemmed against what is being termed a third wave of virus infections. Consequently, the timid optimism that international book fair organizers have tried to keep up for more than a year now has started to crumble again.
Book fairs down and virtual
Book fairs postponed from 2020 to 2021 and then again from earlier dates to later this year are now being canceled one after the other. Unexpectedly, the first book fair to shut down its physical show this year was the Taipei International Book Exhibition, scheduled for January. Due to the sudden outbreak of Covid-19 cases in Taiwan, TIBE had to be canceled for the second time, reducing its activities to a series of professional online forums.
In India, the Hyderabad and Jaipur literature festivals were the first to turn virtual, even as local book melas in Chennai, Kochi, and Guwahati maintained a physical presence despite the pandemic. In March, the National Book Trust and the International Trade Organization of India were compelled to stick to an online version of the New Delhi World Book Fair, a first-time experience. The 45th edition of the Kolkata Book Fair, postponed to July this year, may have to skip its busy outdoor event as well.
Brussels, Leipzig and Paris postpone to 2022
In Europe, the Brussels and Leipzig book fairs were the first to be reduced to a few literary street gigs, while organizers hope to resume their core activities next year. Paris' Livre Paris fair followed suit in March, stating, "The decision to cancel this year's show was finally made because it was considered unfeasible to mobilize thousands of people — exhibitors, publishers, authors, speakers, communities and ministries, partners from more than 50 countries — at a later date in the fall, which is still very uncertain."
The London Book Fair's fate initially shifted from March to the end of June, is still in limbo, as its organizers seem to keep to their late notice policy so heavily criticized last year. In November last year, LBF's newly appointed director Andy Ventris said he was "committed to making a final decision by the end of March." But on the last day of March, he issued a statement explaining, "We promised to update the trade about plans for the 2021 fair by the end of March. Given the continuing uncertainty around international travel, we are currently planning for all scenarios and will update with a final decision in mid-April."
The statement was made three days after the UK government published a detailed timetable for gradually easing the UK's different lockdown measures at five-week intervals. According to the timetable, the last legal limits on social contacts are to be lifted from 21 June at the earliest, depending on the country's vaccination rollout, the effectiveness of the vaccination program at reducing hospital admissions and deaths, infection rates, and the impact of any new coronavirus variants. Many industry professionals had already agreed in November that the June target dates for LBF's 50th edition were unrealistic. At any rate, for 2022, the fair plans to return to its usual spring dates.
Bologna, Jerusalem postponed to 2022
Given the pandemic situation in Italy, the 58th edition of the international Fiera del Libro per Ragazzi or Bologna Children's Book Fair, also scheduled for June, is expected to focus on the online-only events that are already being prepared and to announce the cancelation of its physical show shortly. The BCBF's organizers are already expanding its digital format, and mainly the Global Rights Exchange platform started last year. They are hoping "to support dialogue and international business throughout the year, helping publishers remain in constant contact and bridging the gap from one trade show to the next."
Israel's leading book fair, the week-long Jerusalem International Book Forum, has been postponed until next year while limiting its presence in May this year to a digital program, even though half of its population has already been vaccinated. Madrid's Feria del Libro proposes two alternative dates for June and September but is likely to be skipped this year too. So are most of the other book fairs in large parts of the world.
FBF rethinking re:connect – preparing for a 2nd digital edition
The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair is so far holding on to a physical event in May, although it cannot expect to see any international participants by then. Under the slogan 're:connect,' the Frankfurt Book Fair organizers are anticipating the improbability of a physical event this October. They are preparing for its second digital edition without participants on the ground. As far as we know, potential participants are doing the same.
In the meantime, inspired by the success of their participation in what they call FBF's "Fakefurt" rights trading platform initiated last year, a number of publishers and literary agents decided to organize their own 'digital book fair' before the dates that had been announced for the London and Bologna fairs. The last two weeks of March already saw such exchanges between Hachette, Pan MacMillan, literary agency Curtis Brown, and others.
Book sales up and down
Meanwhile, the book publishing industry has been less affected by the pandemic than was initially feared, at least in sales, but the situation remains highly contradictory. In most mature markets, general-interest (trade) book sales have been up over the past year, including audiobooks and eBooks, even as other categories such as textbooks, scholarly, academic, and niche publications have seen significant contraction.
According to a survey presented at the recent Intergraf visioconference 'Shaping the Future of Books,' the printed books market in Europe as a whole in 2020 saw "the biggest volume rise since 2007." In contrast, the Federation of European Publishers' latest report estimates the industry's overall revenue losses in 2020 at between 2 and 5% across Europe. In the UK, printed book sales grew by 5.2% in 2020 as compared to 2019. The Republic of Ireland saw overall book sales rise by nearly 10%, but, remarkably, sales of books by Irish publishers fell by 6%. In Germany, overall book revenue in 2020 was down 2.3%. Still, specific categories such as activity titles (cooking, gardening, do-it-yourself) were up by 5-6%, with more consumers spending time at home and eCommerce book sales booming.
France's book industry survived on textbooks and other professional categories, while the largest category, trade books, including digital sales, decreased by 3-4%. In Italy, trade book sales were up 2.4%, and all other categories suffered losses. In Spain, both trade and textbooks were down 4%, while its industry's still relevant exports to Latin America dropped by 50%. The book industry in Eastern Europe reported declines between 10 and 20%; however, this was not as bad as predicted half a year ago.
As we reported in January, US book sales in 2020 had their highest growth rates since 2010, with an overall increase of 8% compared to 2019, and some categories such as juvenile fiction and juvenile non-fiction increasing by as much as 11 and 23%, respectively. Within one year, Amazon's book sales revenue and net income have doubled, despite its initial deprioritization of books over other goods when the first lockdown measures led to massive online purchases of all sorts. In contrast, bookshops and small publishers are still suffering from the pandemic and lockdowns, and everybody in the industry is hoping that this will all be over soon.

At that price, the MacBook Air was a no brainer.

Akhil Arora: Nintendo Switch Of all the purchases I made this year, the red-and-blue Nintendo Switch has been my favourite. I can’t imagine why anyone would opt for the dour, colourless grey Joy-Con scheme. For someone who spends two to three hours on the road the days I commute, it’s been worth it simply for that time. Instead of spending it reading (mind-numbing and frustrating) news on my phone, I’ve invested that time in games that make me smile, laugh, or cry.
The Switch is perfect for on-the-go entertainment, not just because it has been the source of some of the best games this year in Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8, and Mario + Rabbids, but also because you can pause at any moment, unlike TV shows and movies, which I’ve never been too fond of viewing on small screens anyway. It has its flaws, as the battery life and internal storage aren’t great, but that’s fine. It’s turned my most useless hours into the most fun.

Aman Rashid: Beats X 2017 has been the year of the death of the headphone jack. Almost every other top tier phone manufacturer doesn’t have a headphone jack on their flagship device. And that brings me to my best tech purchase this year: the blue Beats X. Initially I used to think that the transition will be difficult, but I’m glad I went the wireless route. The audio quality is great, the fit is comfortable and it charges from 0-100 percent in like 20-25 minutes.
And on top of that, I’m able to squeeze out two days of use from them on a single charge. Though it’s true that wireless earphones have their own set of disadvantages and on top of that to get a decent pair of them will cost you around Rs. 10,000 – 12,000. But if the price is not an issue then I can surely say the Beats X won’t disappoint.

Ankit Chawla: Mi Air Purifier 2 I live in New Delhi and we have been plagued with the world’s worst pollution for the past few years. After reading up on the benefits, I picked up a couple of units of the Mi Air Purifier 2 for me and the folks.

Gagan Gupta: Amazon Echo It’s a tough year to single out a single tech purchase that has been a game changer for me, since there were just so many of them. But gun to my head, I would pick the Amazon Echo. I was a bit concerned when I picked it up at launch, and I did have some trouble with the app initially, but now it’s a very crucial part of my bedroom. It reads out the news to me when I’m up, it plays ‘morning music’ when I’m getting ready for work, and it even keeps my kid entertained without having her to look at a screen for extended durations. Though I don’t use it as often as I would like, it rarely disappoints when I ask it to do something. It has inspired me to make my home ‘smart’ with the Echo speaker as the main control point.

Gopal Sathe: Nintendo Switch After a lot of hemming and hawing, I bought a Nintendo Switch this year. Nintendo’s newest console reminds me a lot of my favourite console ever, the PS Vita, but with the added advantage of letting me plug it into the TV and game on the big screen without buying anything extra. The ability to start playing from your couch, and then just pick up the Switch and keep going is amazing, and makes even a (nearly) seven-year-old game like Skyrim shine again.

Jagmeet Singh: Apple Watch Series 2 While Apple launched the anticipated Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE support earlier this year, I bought the Apple Watch Series 2 as the new gadget in my bouquet a few months back. I didn’t find it worthwhile to spend more on the Series 3 as its standalone voice calling feature is not yet available in India. Moreover, I can get all great features of the latest Apple Watch version right on my wrist – even at a lower price.
The Apple Watch Series 2 has a water-resistant build that makes it a perfect wearable for daily use. Also, there is a built-in GPS antenna that provides me with accurate distance and speed measurements. I’m not a fitness geek, though. There is a large number of watchfaces, and I own various wristbands and cases to personalise my Apple Watch. The best thing about the Apple Watch is its seamless connectivity with an iPhone. This is something that convinces me to pick my Apple Watch each day I leave my home. The Watch offers me real-time notifications as well as allows me to attend voice calls or reply to new messages or emails without bringing out my iPhone.

Jamshed Avari: iPhone SE 64GB People are often surprised to hear that I don’t buy every single top-end phone that comes out. The truth is that while I do love using the latest and greatest devices, I have a mental block when it comes to spending so much money. This year, I picked up a iPhone SE 64GB online at a great price right around the time that it was being phased out, which means it was already a year old. I think it offers tremendous value, with pretty much the same hardware as the iPhone 6s.
It’s going to receive iOS updates for quite a few years and the processor handles all my dozens of apps without any hiccups. It takes great pictures, though this is admittedly one area in which it lags behind more up-to-date models. Apple finally got its entry-level pricing and storage capacity strategies right, and I wholeheartedly recommend the current 32GB and 128GB models every time they’re discounted online.

Naina Gupta: LG Q6+ This year, I decided to change my smartphone that had already started to look old and dated. After going over the endless smartphone options satisfactorily, my eyes stopped on LG Q6+, which was launched this year. The LG Q6+ packs a FullVision display that has an 18:9 display aspect ratio. I am more of a person who loves binge-watching shows on my phone and this year’s hotly adapted trend of larger-than-usual mobile displays came as a delight with Q6+.
Other that this, I love clicking photographs on my phone as the camera is good enough for novice photography (I’m not a good photographer). The only thing that concerns me is the battery life, but this doesn’t stop me from loving this phone.

Pranay Parab: Apple AirPods I bought the Apple AirPods in 2017, thanks to a sale that brought its price down to Rs. 9,000. Initially I was too scared to use it while running (“What if it falls?”, “It’s not waterproof, will sweat damage AirPods?”) but since when did that stop a Gadgets 360 staff member from taking a chance? That is how AirPods became my favourite headphones for listening to music while running. Now I sync music to my Apple Watch Series 2 and go for a run without my iPhone. Yes, that means I’m out of touch with people when I’m out running but it’s good to be offline once in a while. From short 5km tempo runs to half marathons, I’ve run all distances with the AirPods and faced no issues. That’s why AirPods are my favourite purchase of 2017.

Ravi Sharma: iPhone 7 Having been in the Android camp since I purchased the Moto Defy in 2010, I finally decided to move over to the iPhone side this year. Though not a fan of a closed ecosystem and not much impressed with iOS on my iPad, I still decided to go with iPhone 7 because I was tired of replacing Android phones once a year.
iOS on the iPhone 7 offered more features than I expected it to, and several synergies with the iPad that made working on two devices very cohesive. The iPhone 7 experience has been good enough so far to make it my favourite purchase of the year, ahead of the Amazon Echo Dot.

Rishi Alwani: Xbox One X Last year I singled out what was known as Project Scorpio – Microsoft’s answer to the PS4 Pro – as 2017’s hottest piece of tech. Now known as the Xbox One X, it’s delivered on most of Microsoft’s promises. From cutting-edge visual fidelity in current titles like Halo 5 and Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, to the ability to play games from the original Xbox that released back in 2001 like Crimson Skies and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, it’s my favourite tech purchase of 2017.
The Xbox One X has more or less replaced everything else that I usually game on when I’m at home. All that’s left is Microsoft India to realise that there’s real demand for iterative consoles (if sales of the PS4 Pro here are any indication) and release it here officially. Something for 2018 perhaps?

Roydon Cerejo: Sony MDR-1000X Call it a weird coincidence but like last year, my best tech purchase this year has also been a pair of headphones. This time, it’s the mighty Sony MDR-1000X noise cancelling cans. I’ve been itching to get my hands on either the Bose QC35 or the MDR-1000X for a while now, but when I found the Sonys for $299 (roughly Rs. 20,000), it was simply too good a deal to pass up. Other reasons for leaning towards the Sony more intuitive controls (touch-based) and the high resolution codec support (LDAC) for music. It’s only been about two months since I got it but so far, it’s been absolutely fantastic.

Sandeep Kumar Sinha: Vu 39-inch Smart TV After surveying the market, I found the Vu 39-inch Full-HD Smart TV as the best bet for my living room. The TV has a bunch of web services, including Netflix and YouTube among others, that mainly inclined my buying decision. And once I installed it in my room, I observed that apart from these integrated services, there are many good features that makes the Vu TV a compelling option. The A+ Grade IPS panel produces decent colours. The TV also has three HDMI ports and two USB ports that are enough to connect the screen with other devices. Further, the stereo speakers on the TV produce decent audio across my room.
The most attractive point of the Vu TV however is its affordable price, which is significantly lower than the likes of LG, Samsung, and Sony.

Shubham Verma: Amazon Echo When Amazon announced that its Echo smart speaker range is hitting Indian marketplaces, I was completely convinced to get myself a unit out of the first batch of Amazon Echo. I got my Amazon Echo speaker in the beginning of November and have been using it sparingly. The personal digital assistants such as Google Assistant, Cortana, and Siri are already available in India where Google’s Assistant enjoys an upper hand, solely because Google and its services are driven heavily by the behaviour and usage patterns of Indian users. Having tried all of them, it was time to unbox the newcomer (to India), Alexa.
Alexa, Amazon’s voice assistant, has been adapted to suit to multiple Indian accents for English, along with integration with Bollywood, English, and other Indian regional music. Alexa’s promptness to listen to my voice, even from a reasonable distance, is quite admirable. Talking about the speaker itself, Amazon Echo is pretty decent at filling a particular space in your house with loud, clear, and distinctive sound.

Yousuf Jawed: Apple Music 2017 has been more about app purchases and subscriptions for me. The one app to which I am consistently subscribed to is Apple Music. I used Airtel Wynk and Play Music, but Apple Music is the app which I like, for many reasons.
