Lets talk about disposable coffee cups! They are an environmental nightmare, most people aren’t actually aware that these cup, even though they look recyclable actually aren’t. They end up in landfill, yep that’s right, landfill and they might take hundreds of thousands of years to breakdown! Considering that the world uses over 14 billion of them each year, my concern is that we are going to run out of land to fill these with! That’s hell of cups for the world to dispose of!
Now where you’re a coffee, tea or hot chocolate drinker you’ve probably contributed to this environmental issue.
I’m from Melbourne (ode to the land of the great coffee, sorry if I offended anyone but our coffee is great), I see hundreds of people each day walking around with these take away, no recyclable, cups that our children’s children might have to build their homes with.....sorry I got carried away there!
This cup (photographed) and I have been together for about 4 years, it cost me around $5, I got to choose the size and colour and most barristers can’t recognise me without it. I’ll often double back home if I’ve forgotten it.
I only have one coffee a day, but on a really shit day so I can get through the dinner and bedtime routine with the kids I’ll have two. But so I can do the math, lets just say one a day. That’s nearly 1500 disposable cups that I have managed to save from our planet over the past four years! Yes I feel really good about it but I’m one small coffee drinking gal in this big coffee drinking world of ours.
So all I ask is that the next time you grab a delicious strong frothy take away coffee,  BYO                    YOUR                                        OWN                                                             CUP. Doesn’t have to be fancy, doesn’t even need to have a lid, take along a normal porcelain cup from the kitchen, if you want. Take charge of things that you can control and stop using those recyclable looking but non recyclable cups.
P.S. I really love coffee ;)
