#repost @nyconstructionphoto . . People Who Build New York City Anthony Cranes are used to construct a skyscraper, but who assembles them? This is Anthony's job as a Rigger. Riggers are basically heavy movers who erect, dismantle and "jump" tower cranes. Anthony has been on the job for 15 years, starting out as crane mechanics and advancing into the rigging. Anthony chose this job because it fits his personality perfectly. Rigger profession requires years of classroom and hands on training. Balance and agility are standard requirements as well as brute strength because everything is heavy. Crane rigging is very challenging and dangerous. The hardest part of a job is balancing personal life with the demand of the profession as Anthony often works 60-80 hours a week. The best part of the job is amazing people he works with. Average size tower crane weighs about 600 tons and takes about 2 long days to erect. Cranes are usually jumped every 3 weeks depending on job progression. Besides jumps, a crane requires a lot of maintenance during skyscraper construction. There is engine preventive maintenance such as greasing and cleaning and 1-2 cable changes. Most cranes are secured to a building with steel tie beams and left for the night perpendicular to the wind in weather vane mode, meaning the crane's swing brake is released so the jib can move freely in the wind. So how do you take down a crane from the top of 1000+ foot building? Removal and dismantling of a crane from tall structures requires the use of a lifting device called Derrick (crane's granddaddy) which is a simpler, smaller version of a crane. Anthony's favorite skyscraper is Freedom Tower. He worked on the tower cranes during its construction and every time he looks at the NYC skyline he feels the sense of accomplishment. It was also a bittersweet project for him as he lost a relative in the September 11 attacks. Anthony's hobbies are auto racing and anything that relates to engines in general. He builds engines in his garage including 4 cylinder engine with 700HP. That was probably not the best way to land roof panels. That could have easily decapitated someone below. #roofer #rigger #riggerslife #soyouthinkyoucanrig #oshaisthisafe #repost https://www.instagram.com/p/B4pua53HuB_/?igshid=6oi4am87jdpm
