the difference in how marvin calls whizzer his friend in a tight knit family vs what would i do

in a tight knit family, he says "and i ran off...with a friend." almost snidely, to both himself, and to whizzer (or, more interpretively, to the audience) like hes making a joke out of it, and is still uncertain of what hes allowed to call his relationship with whizzer, and he still looks down on it.

by what would i do?, marvin says "who would i be/what would i do if you had not been...my friend?" with complete genuiness. at this point in his life, hes finally reached a point of melancholic security in their relationship, and is perfectly happy in regarding their relationship as the most important friendship of his life, realizing it transcended far beyond anything else at that point — transcended sex, love, friendship, and family. he was finally liberated to see it through any lens
