October is one of my favourite months of the year as I know that the Cape Town International Kite Festival is about to come up. Clearing my schedule for the end of the month in October is always at the top of my list because as tradition has it, Muizenberg is where I am headed every year. For what you may ask? The Kite Festival of course! Every year the darlings over at the CT Kite Fest invite my family and I to come and ‘fly’ with them and every year we make it our mission to venture out to Zandvlei Nature Reserve. This year the theme was ‘Rise Up and Fly’ and is symbolic of the fact that “Almost everyone feels inspired when they simply lift their heads and look up”, as stated by director of Cape Mental Health and president elect of the World Federation for Mental Health, Ingrid Daniels.
I feel like I enjoy the Kite Fest more and more every year. Every year brings new and exciting kites and we see so many people come out and support both international and local kiters. For those that are not familiar, the Annual Cape Town International Kite Festival is all about supporting individuals with mental health struggles and all proceeds generated for the event are dedicated to funding ‘resource-poor’ communities. Did you know: That it is estimated that one in four South Africans will experience a mental condition at some point in their lives and that 75% of those individuals will not have access to services and care.
A few days before the event, I headed out to Promenade Mall which is in the area where I live and decided to have a little preview of what the Kite Festival will have to offer this year. I was pleasantly surprised with the turn out and to see how excited both the adults and kids were to see the sky filled with colourful creations. They got to see the international kiters fly their kites and were given their own kites to join in on the fun. I decided to head out to Muizenberg on the last day of the Kite Festival and I have to say that the crowd did not disappoint. It was nice seeing so many families come out and support the event. I parked at Muizenberg High School which is about a 5 minute walk to the Zandvlei Nature Reserve. I felt like it was a nice touch that the organizers provided free shuttles from the parking area to the event location.
After we strolled around for a little while, we decided to grab some lunch at one of the many food trucks and stalls that were available. We were definitely spoilt for choice as there were a variety of different food options on offer.
Aside from the food stalls, there were also kite making workshops for both adults and children. There was live entertainment on stage that encouraged the kids (and adults) to join in on the singing and dancing with many freebies up for grabs. So many families made a day of it and brought their picnic baskets and blankets and basked in the sun while enjoying the festivities on stage. The friendly kiters from Australia allowed kids to fly their massive kites and lets just say they were beyond stoked.Needless to say, fun was had! If you want to see and read more about the Annual Cape Town International Kite Festival, follow the #RiseUpAndFly hashtag on social media. There are some spectacular images (my pictures can’t do this event justice) of the beautiful kites. If you want to read my post of last year, just click here. If you didn’t get to attend this year, I urge you to please attend next year and support this worthy cause.
”Strong people are made by opposition like kites that go up against the wind” – Frank Harris.
