KOOKABURRA

The Belgian quartet Kookaburra is a garage/fuzz/psych/post-punk band based in Antwerp. With their wild, energetic, guitar rock they turn every show into a true experience; Kookaburra is experiencing and living through. Like the Australian bird, Kookaburra creaks, squeaks and rattles on all sides, but they never forget the essence; make extremely catchy garage rock songs. After the first two EPs 'Mystery Girl' (2017) and 'KidKiteBike' (2019), the first album titled 'Dry Eyes / White Mice' was released in 2020. In November 2022, Kookaburra went into the studio again, this time with Frank Rotthier in Trix Studio. Their new EP 'Spot Me From Outer Space' due out June 12, 2023 (Idiotape Records, Rockerill Records and Gazer Tapes) highlights a new side of the band as they let their dark post-fuzz punk flourish.

I don’t know what’s up with that and I am too lazy and not IT-intelligent enough to look for another solution. But you know the deal, I always post the direct link. ANYWAY. 

Pictured below is Belgian band Aroma Di Amore. Probably unknown to most of my foreign listeners (hi Neil!), hopefully not unknown to the Belgians here. Aroma Di Amore played their very last show last week in Brussels, after a career that spanned 40 years. Ok, there was 25 years between the 1987 album Koudvuur and their comeback album “Samizdat” (2012), but the influence that the band had on me is immense. The name of my previous radio show De Radio Is Gek Geworden? It’s a song by Aroma Di Amore. They sing in Dutch, and it’s just too easy to put them in the league of other eighties Belgian post punk bands such as De Brassers or Siglo XX or The Cultural Decay. Aroma Di Amore is a blend of their own, some of their tracks remind me more of Big Black then of Joy Division, and the trademark drum computer that they use is more punk than the same instrument used by The Sisters Of Mercy. By the way, the eighties output of the band is now collected on an LP-box called “Zwarte Doos” and released by Onderstroom Records. I’m in doubt whether to buy it or not, it’s pricey but all those records are just very very good.

Pictured below is Frederikke Hoffmeier, aka Puce Mary. Puce Mary has been very active between 2011 and 2018, but 2018 was the year of the last full length “The Drought”, released on PAN. She was also active as the duo (with Jesse Sanes) JH1.FS3, but the last three-four years it’s been quiet around the power electronics project that is Puce Mary. Until recently, two new tapes were released on Hypersomnia Records, a new label probably started by Hoffmeier herself. It took a while to send the tapes to the listeners, and there were a lot of unhappy comments on the PM Bandcamp page, but the tapes were sent out and they are simply awesome. I’m playing a track out of the “You Must Have Been Dreaming” tape called “The Alphabet”, a track that shows a softer side of Puce Mary. The noise and the power electronics are a little more suppressed and turned inwards, more introspective, somewhere in between early Puce Mary releases and the JH1.FS3 releases, and I really hope that these two new releases give new energy to the Puce Mary project. In this episode we also shortly look back on a very nice Sonic City weekend here in Kortrijk with excellent shows by Lewsberg, Crack Cloud and Kiran Leonard, amongst others (EXEK were awesome too), and we play some new tracks by Vision 3D, Mitraille, Lithics, and old tracks from Kate Fagan, Galaxie 500, The Ex and Parquet Courts.
