Tonight's #criterion viewing: Jean-Pierre Melville's BOB THE GAMBLER (1956). Its original French title is "Bob le flambeur." "Flambeur" doesn't precisely translate to English, but it essentially means "high roller," and it's different from a gambler. I feel like that's an apt metaphor for this movie, which is like a Melvillian version of a noir or a heist film that doesn't quite have am equivalent in conventional cinema.
