Building Better: India’s Quest for Sustainable Infrastructure Solutions
By: Mrs. Tarini Bharadwaj Museum Professional and Documentation-expert
India stands at a crossroads of development, balancing the imperatives of economic growth with the urgent need to preserve its environment and ensure social equity. As the world’s second-most populous country, India’s infrastructure needs are vast and varied. However, traditional approaches to development have often come at a significant cost to the environment and human well-being. In response to these challenges, the concept of sustainable infrastructure has emerged as a guiding principle for India’s future development endeavors.
Sustainable Infrastructure: A Paradigm Shift
Sustainable infrastructure represents a departure from conventional development models by integrating environmental, social, and economic considerations into infrastructure planning and implementation. At its core, sustainable infrastructure seeks to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This holistic approach recognizes the interconnectedness of human societies and the natural world, aiming to minimize environmental impact, enhance social inclusivity, and promote economic resilience.
Initiatives Promoting Sustainable Infrastructure:
Recognizing the need for a paradigm shift, the Indian government has launched several initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable infrastructure development. The Smart Cities Mission, launched in 2015, seeks to transform urban areas into sustainable and citizen-friendly cities through investments in infrastructure and technology. Under this mission, cities are encouraged to adopt innovative solutions for transportation, energy, water, and waste management, with a focus on sustainability and inclusivity.
Another key initiative is the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), which aims to improve basic infrastructure in urban areas, including water supply, sewerage, and solid waste management. By prioritizing investments in sustainable infrastructure, AMRUT seeks to enhance the quality of life for urban residents while conserving natural resources and reducing pollution.
Case Studies of Sustainable Infrastructure Projects
Several sustainable infrastructure projects in India serve as shining examples of what is possible when sustainability principles are integrated into development planning. One such project is the Delhi Metro, which has revolutionized public transportation in the national capital region while significantly reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. With its use of energy-efficient trains and stations, the Delhi Metro sets a high standard for sustainable urban transportation systems.
Another noteworthy example is the Suzlon One Earth campus in Pune, Maharashtra, which showcases the potential of green building design in reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions. Designed to minimize environmental impact and maximize employee well-being, the campus features energy-efficient buildings, rooftop solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems, and green spaces.
Kochi International Airport:
Kochi International Airport in Kerala, India, is the world’s first fully solar-powered airport. With over 46,000 solar panels covering an area of 45 acres, the airport generates more than 60,000 units of electricity per day, meeting its entire energy requirements from solar power. This initiative not only reduces the airport’s carbon footprint but also sets an example for other airports globally to adopt renewable energy solutions.
Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City)
GIFT City, located in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, is India’s first operational smart city and international financial services center. Designed as a sustainable and eco-friendly city, GIFT City incorporates green building practices, efficient energy management systems, and integrated waste management solutions. The city aims to become a global hub for finance and technology while minimizing its environmental impact.
Nagpur Metro Rail
The Nagpur Metro Rail project in Maharashtra is India’s first metro rail project to receive the ‘Platinum’ rating for sustainability from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). The metro stations and depots are equipped with energy-efficient lighting, rainwater harvesting systems, and solar power generation facilities. The project also promotes the use of public transportation, reducing carbon emissions and traffic congestion in the city.
Sabarmati Riverfront Development
The Sabarmati Riverfront Development project in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, aims to revitalize the Sabarmati riverfront while promoting environmental sustainability and social inclusivity. The project includes riverfront promenades, gardens, recreational spaces, and integrated flood management infrastructure. By restoring the ecological balance of the river and creating public amenities, the project enhances the quality of life for residents while preserving natural resources.
Pune Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS)
The Pune BRTS is a sustainable urban transportation system that provides fast, reliable, and eco-friendly bus services to commuters in Pune, Maharashtra. The BRTS features dedicated bus lanes, modern bus stations, and intelligent transportation systems to improve efficiency and reduce congestion. By encouraging the use of public transportation, the project helps reduce air pollution and carbon emissions in the city.
These real-time examples demonstrate India’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure development and environmental stewardship. By integrating green technologies, innovative design practices, and community engagement, these projects contribute to India’s transition towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
Sustainable Infrastructure in Renewable Energy
India has made significant strides in promoting renewable energy as part of its sustainable infrastructure efforts. The country had set ambitious targets for renewable energy deployment, including 175 gigawatts (GW) of installed renewable energy capacity by 2022, with a further target of 450 GW by 2030. Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power offer immense potential for meeting India’s growing energy needs while reducing its reliance on fossil fuels and mitigating climate change.
The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) plays a crucial role in facilitating the development of solar energy projects across the country through competitive bidding processes and power purchase agreements. The Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, launched in 2010, aims to promote the development of solar energy in India through various incentives and subsidies.
Despite the progress made in promoting sustainable infrastructure, significant challenges remain. Financing sustainable infrastructure projects can be a major hurdle, especially for cash-strapped municipalities and small businesses. Additionally, outdated regulations and bureaucratic red tape often hinder the implementation of innovative solutions.
However, these challenges also present opportunities for innovation and collaboration. The rise of impact investing and green finance offers new avenues for financing sustainable infrastructure projects, while public-private partnerships can help leverage resources and expertise from both sectors. By fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration, India can overcome the barriers to sustainable infrastructure development and unlock new opportunities for economic growth and environmental stewardship.
The Future of Sustainable Infrastructure in India
As India continues on its path of development, the importance of sustainable infrastructure will only grow. Emerging technologies such as renewable energy, electric vehicles, and smart grid systems hold great promise for transforming India’s infrastructure landscape and reducing its environmental footprint. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the need for resilient infrastructure that can withstand future shocks and crises.
To realize the full potential of sustainable infrastructure, concerted efforts are needed from all stakeholders, including government, businesses, civil society, and academia. By working together towards a common goal of sustainability, India can build a brighter and greener future for generations to come.
In conclusion, sustainable infrastructure is not just a buzzword; it is a fundamental principle that must guide India’s development journey in the 21st century and beyond. By prioritizing sustainability in infrastructure planning and implementation, India can achieve its development goals while safeguarding the planet for future generations.

Power Crisis in India- Would be Switching to Solar Solve Your Issue
Power Crisis in India
India recently experienced a power crisis, with the daily peak power shortage reaching 10,778 MW and the national energy deficit reaching 5%, with some states experiencing steep deficits of up to 15%. As a result, distribution companies resorted to load-shedding, resulting in long periods of outage for many households and rationed supply for economic activities.
This crisis has resulted from the depletion of coal supplies at thermal power plants. This, however, is not a new phenomenon. The shortage occurs almost every year, and despite various measures, the government has not been able to solve the problem.
An Unpredictable Resource
Despite being the world's second largest coal producer, the country experienced a coal supply shortage. However, this time, a lack of availability was not a cause for concern. Instead, problems with coal evacuation and stockpiling at thermal power plants caused a supply shortage. This, combined with an increase in the price of imported coal due to the world's unsettled political climate, resulted in a severe shortage.
The country urgently needs to diversify its electricity generation. Why? Because, even if India avoids the immediate crisis this year, it may not be able to do so in the future.
The demand for electricity continues to rise. Following the Covid-19 pandemic, Indian industries are attempting to resume operations and make up for lost time. A steady supply of electricity is critical in a rapidly growing economy and population. This crisis has provided an opportunity for the country to reduce its reliance on finite fossil fuels. The country requires a paradigm shift. From conventional and limited energy sources to locally available and sustainable renewable energy.
Tumblr media
The Renewable Solution
According to a study conducted by Climate Risk Horizons, a policy research organisation, there would have been no crisis if India had met its renewable energy target of 175 GW. Renewable energy sources would have supplemented the generation from thermal power plants. This, in turn, would have preserved the dwindling reserves.
India currently has a renewable energy capacity of 160.92 GW, with a goal of reaching 175 GW by the end of 2022. This figure includes wind power, solar energy, bio-power, and small and large hydroelectrical power. Solar energy is the most accessible power source for homes, businesses, and industries.
The Bright Potential of Solar
As a tropical country, many states in India receive plenty of sunlight. The country can convert this locally available resource into a power source with a well-established solar infrastructure.
According to the National Institute of Solar Energy, the country has a vast solar potential of approximately 748 GW, assuming that solar modules cover 3% of the waste land area. India's goal for harnessing this resource is to build 280 GW of solar power capacity by 2030. Furthermore, to achieve this goal, the Indian government is constructing large-scale solar power plants. Through policy changes and subsidy programmes, they are also encouraging rooftop solar installations.
And there are many takers.
Businesses and industries across many industries are turning to solar to reduce their electricity costs and gain energy production independence. Furthermore, as residential solar installation policies evolve, homeowners are investing in rooftop solar systems.
Many state-owned buildings use this renewable resource to meet their energy requirements. Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) in Kerala was the world's first airport to run entirely on solar energy. Similarly, other state airports such as Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Delhi have chosen to use green energy.
Solar energy is the most popular renewable energy source in India because it provides numerous benefits:
Tumblr media
Benefits of Solar Energy
1. Reduces strain on coal
During the day, solar energy production is at its peak. This is also the peak period for power demand. The pressure on coal systems can be reduced if we supplement coal-based power with this renewable resource. In this manner, coal reserves can be saved for the night.
2. Improves grid security
Energy generation centres are expanding as small and large-scale solar power plants are built across states. As a result, utility grids are being infused with solar power, which improves grid security. A strong grid also reduces the likelihood of frequent blackouts.
3. Reduces Electricity Bill
Electricity prices are rising as the supply of power sources becomes more uncertain. Solar can significantly reduce energy costs in this scenario. The initial investment in solar systems can be recovered in as little as 2-3 years.
4. Wider Reach
Many remote areas of India lack access to electricity but receive plenty of sunlight. Solar energy systems with battery backup are a viable solution in such cases.
5. Feasible
Solar systems have become more efficient, dependable, and cost-effective as newer technology has entered the market. As a result, installing solar has become more affordable for consumers across all industries.
Government Policies & Challenges
Many new policies to promote solar energy development have recently emerged in India. Policies such as the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) and Basic Custom Duty aim to develop domestic manufacturing capacity for solar modules by restricting solar module and solar cell imports. Others, such as the Green Energy Open Access Policy, make it simple for commercial and industrial customers to buy renewable energy from sources other than their local power distribution company.A national portal was also established to facilitate the submission of applications and the tracking of subsidy transfers.
However, there are still some major hurdles in reaching the solar target-
• Despite the encouragement, domestic manufacturing capacity for solar components remains limited, and imports have become prohibitively expensive. This has an impact on the cost of solar energy systems.
• There is a need to develop transmission and distribution infrastructure for solar power project power evacuation.
• The availability of clear land for ground-mounted solar systems continues to be an issue. The high cost of land is a major impediment to the establishment of power plants.
• Covid-19 imposed financial constraints on commercial and industrial businesses, limiting their ability to invest in new solar projects.
• Distribution companies' opposition has also been a major impediment. Many states restrict net metering and force their customers to use gross metering, limiting their ability to save money on electricity.
A 'favourable policy environment' is required to boost solar development in India. Furthermore, the Indian government should take steps to create dedicated financing options for solar projects in order to make it easier for businesses to shift their focus to solar energy.
Aside from that, improved implementation of existing renewable policies and solar infrastructure development are required to increase India's solar capacity.

Utility giant Tata Power has recently won a contract worth Rs 400 crore from the Kerala State Electricity Board Ltd (KSEB) to develop an 84 MW solar rooftop project for domestic consumers across all districts in the state of Kerala.Under this contract, the Mumbai-based power utility will implement projects through KSEB of 64 MW for individual households with solar capacity ranging from 3kW - 10kW and 20 MW for residential and housing society projects with solar capacity ranging from 11kW - 100kW.The company has won this capacity in a bid announced by KSEBL in February this year under the ‘Soura Subsidy Scheme in Domestic Sector’, Kerala, in line with the Phase II Subsidy Programme of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE).As per the terms of the agreement, the company has to commission the project within three months of the receipt of an order from individual residential customers.Post completion of this 84 MW solar rooftop project, it is expected to generate 120 MUs of energy per year and will annually offset approximately 100 Million Kg of CO2.Commenting on the project win, Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD of Tata Power, said “we are delighted to secure the 84 MW rooftop project from KSEBL and are proud to have this opportunity to support domestic consumers migrate to green energy. This project is testament of KSEBL’s trust in our commitment to drive India’s transition towards clean power through rooftop solar-based generation.”Earlier in January 2021, Tata Power had received a Letter of Award (LoA) from KSEBL to develop a 110 MW rooftop solar project which is expected to generate about 274 MUs of energy per year.

SOLAR PANEL SUBSIDY IN INDIA
When discussing solar energy, we think about the pricing of the solar system and the subsidy scheme for solar panels. The Government of India has launched a power saving scheme called Solar Roof Top Power Plant to save wealth for future generations. We all know the obvious reason for not using solar energy in the residential / commercial sector and its value. Therefore, realizing this problem, the Central Government launched the MNRE Solar Subsidy Scheme.
MNRE solar subsidy scheme
40 % up to 3 KW
Plus 20% for Remaining above 3 KW up to 10 kW for the Domestic sector.
More the 10KW – No any subsidy
Besides, 70% subsidy in hill stations states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu & Kashmir, and 90% subsidy available for farmers on water pumping systems..
What are the documents required to apply for Solar Subsidy?
