Fantasy Football Rookie Running Back Rankings

1. Saquon Barkley: There is no greater recipe for fantasy success than possessing all-world talent and being force-fed the ball. Barkley immediately begins his tenure with the Giants as the three-down starter at running back. After the disaster that was their 2017 season, New York is looking to be more balanced offensively and that starts with getting him the ball on a consistent basis. While the Giants offensive line is still suspect despite the additions of Nate Solder and Will Hernandez in free agency and the draft, the threat of their aerial attack should still keep defenses from stacking the box on Barkley. Given the expected volume Barkley will receive next season, 1500 all purpose yards and twelve touchdowns is very reasonable. 

2. Sony Michel: Michel provides some of the most value in all of fantasy football as many experts don’t have him as even a top 3 rookie running back. Maybe I’m mistaken, but 1) the New England offense is the gold standard for enabling fantasy production, and 2) the best running back aside from Michel on the roster is James White(?). Michel is a do-it-all back that has more talent than the rest of the Patriot’s running backs combined. Another thing going in his favor is his adeptness in pass protection, a rare quality for a back fresh out of college, and something that should get him inserted into the New England starting lineup at a speedy rate. Dion Lewis only started 8 games for the Patriots last year and still had over 1100 all purpose yards and 9 touchdowns. What do you think Michel is going to do when he starts 14 or more?

3. Raashad Penny: The Seahawks’ quest to replace Marshawn Lynch appears to have finally reached its end with the drafting of Raashad Penny from San Diego State. Like Barkley in particular, Penny can be expected to be the starter from the get-go and receive the lions share of the touches at running back. Another thing benefitting Penny is playing within a Russel Wilson-led offense that engineers points despite Wilson running for his life on half the passing downs. Expect around 1,250 all purposes yards and 10 touchdowns from a powerful back with pass catching ability that is paired with one of the best quarterbacks in the league. 

4. Ronald Jones: Jones edges Royce Freeman out at four because of the offense he is going to be inserted in. The Buccaneers have an above average young quarterback with potential to improve in James Winston. With Jameis, the Bucs offense will be productive in and of himself. Simply stated: the better an offense is, the better it is for fantasy production. Jones’ current competition for starting running back is Jacquizz Rodgers, who has masterminded running for under four yards a carry no matter the situation he’s in. While Jones has a thinner build then preferred for a starting running back, with his open field ability and knack for making big plays I expect him to become Tampa’s #1 back early and end up with around 240 touches by years end. 

5. Royce Freeman: Freeman reminds me of a more talented version of CJ Anderson- the guy he was drafted to replace. Despite dealing with consistent incompetency at quarterback over the last three years, Anderson was a productive fantasy running back when healthy and the same should be expected of Freeman in Denver. A thick, compact runner, Freeman is difficult to bring down but also provides value in the passing game as evidenced by his 79 career catches and 800+ career receiving yards while at Oregon. Devontae Booker is the only obstacle standing in Freeman’s way to fantasy relevance, but after averaging 3.5 and 3.8 yards per carry in his two seasons he has done little to inspire confidence in his ability to become a starter. 

6. Kerryon Johnson: Johnson is a guy that every fantasy owner should take a flyer on at the end of their draft this year. While Johnson has a low floor as a guy who may struggle to get red zone carriers over LeGarrette Blount and third down duty over Theo Riddick, he also has a high ceiling as the only back on the Lion’s roster who has the potential to play all three downs. Riddick goes down when five mph+ winds are directed at him and asking Blount to catch a pass is like asking a teenage girl to not complain about boys on social media. At Auburn, Johnson did it all, carrying the ball over 290 times and catching 24 passes. If he takes advantage of his opportunities in the preseason, Johnson could emerge as the Lion’s starter and end up being one of the big steals of the 2018 fantasy season.
