Yuzuru x Sendai (a love story)

So it’s no secret how much Sendai loves Yuzu and how unending their support has been for him. It’s really nice and heartwarming to see. Sendai’s local TV program ran a news report on the Yuzuru Hanyu photo exhibition which is just about the only coverage we have so far, so here you go (in extremely poor quality):

Full translation under the cut. It’s a cute news report, and seriously, The love Sendai has for Yuzu is just too heartwarming :) Trains and buses and exhibitions, ah I want to go to Sendai too~

Narrator (N): Sendai City International Centre Subway Station. From there extends a loooooooooooooooooooooo -breathes- ooooooonnnngg line. Just what is this??

Fan(F): I’m from Osaka (865km away) F: I’m from Kanagawa (402km away) F: I’m from Niigata (265km away) F: Tokyo (365km away)

N: The reason why they’ve purposely come all the way to Sendai is this. The Hanyu Yuzuru Photo and Poster Exhibition!

N: This event that started yesterday (ie 3rd Nov) is an exhibition of the support posters Sendai TV has been producing annually since 2013 together with Sendai-born photographer Noto Sunao’s photos. It’s a limited (time) special event held only in Hanyu’s hometown, Sendai.

N: The photos laid out here come from the past 8 Sendai Festival Photography Events (t/n: the Yuzuru Hanyu Photo exhibitions by Noto) that attracted over 70,000 people, and consist of 120 pieces that were chosen with much difficulty and deliberation by the staff.

N: With the birthplace of Japan’s figure skating, the Goshikinuma pond (scroll down here or see my post here for more info), to the left (of the event space) and held inside the International Centre station which is famous for its Hanyu monument, (the event) looks back on the miracle of his last 4 years with the best photos available. It certainly takes on a special atmosphere!

F (from Sendai, pink): It’s...

F (pink): I’ve been anticipating this for so long... I’ve waited for this!

F (from Yokohama): Really, thank you very much! That’s the kind of feeling I have. It’s completely... I’m from Yokohama but (coming here) is completely....how do you say this, it’s not a hardship for me, I really feel like it’s great that I came here.

F (from Fukushima): I’m a little teary... It’s really incredible isn’t it? Um, everyone, there are so many fans but, the people of Sendai...their love? just cannot be matched.* F (from Hyogo): Be it the incredibly kind feeling that Sendai gives and whatnot, being able to experience those kinds of things make me think it’s really great that I came.

N: What’s more, this time at the event you can purchase a memorial book that has compiled previous support posters and records of those times. This is also limited only to this location so from the morning opening, many fans lined up excitedly.

N: Next year in February, the Pyeongchang Olympics will finally be held. Araarakashi (the TV program) will be fully supporting Hanyu in his new challenge! With that, let’s start this week too with energy!

Female Announcer (FA): About the photographer Noto Sunao, he’s someone who has always been photographing Hanyu so he has a huge collection of photos. From that collection they have carefully chosen the photos for this exhibition and for the memorial book.

Male Announcer (MA): Yes, 120 pieces, it’s incredible isn’t it?

FA: Yes it really is something to look at. -audio cut- Quite a long line formed yesterday and it was made of fans from all over Japan. From that you can see just how popular Hanyu is.

MA: Being able to see so many different faces is amazing isn’t it?

FA: Yes and together with this, an incredible thing is happening too right in Sendai’s towns. In collaboration with this, the Sendai City Transport Bureau is showing its full support, so Sendai’s city subway lines, the Touzai line and the Nanboku line, have put up posters in each of their 26 stations. 

MA + studio: ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh?? No way! Oh it’s true! (lolz ^^:)

FA: Yes and every station has a different poster design and message too.

MA: Wow really??

Red shirt girl (RSG): In order to see this I went to different stations every day.

Everyone else: Really? // You want to different ones? // Wow! // You got on and off? 

RSG: Yes and each and every message, it really resonates in your heart!

FA: On top of this, Sendai’s City Buses too, about 500 of them, have posters displayed as well. The towns of Sendai have really become one with Hanyu.

MA: Wow, the meaning of fun has certainly increased, the fun of taking transport! (t/n: this is a lame pun in Japanese: Norimono ni noru - norimono = things you can ride on aka transport, noru = to ride, also, to get excited/have fun)

FA: There will be many chances to see (these posters) while during your commute but, of course for Hanyu, the Olympics is coming up next year and will be the scene of his challenge. So yes, together with his hometown of Sendai, let’s all send our support to him!

FA: With that, the Hanyu Yuzuru Poster and Photo exhibition will be happening at the 2nd floor of the International Centre Station from the 3rd to the 21st of November. Admission is free so everyone please, make your way down.

*t/n: Here the fan says “kanawanai” which could either be 叶わない (unrequited) or 敵わない (unmatched). The former is more commonly used, but context wise the latter seemed more appropriate. (Unless she thinks Yuzu doesn’t love Sendai and was teary because of that lmao)

Francois van Coke is die hoofsanger van Fokofpolisiekar en Van Coke Kartel. Tydens sy loopbaan van 13 jaar as hoofsanger van dié twee Afrikaanse rock-groepe het hy nege vollengte albums en drie EP’s [verlengdespeeltydalbums] vrygestel, en saamgewerk met mense soos Jack Parow, Die Antwoord, Die Heuwels Fantasties, Seether (Shaun Morgan) en Karen Zoid.  Hy het al vier SAMA-toekennings ontvang, sowel as talle ander. Sy album, Francois van Coke in 2015, is gunstig deur kritici ontvang, en is gevolg deur  sy tweede studio-album, Hierdie is die lewe, wat op 2 Februarie hierdie jaar vrygestel word.

Volgens Francois handel die album oor die menslike toestand.  “Alles wat tussen geboorte en sterfte gebeur, ons oorwinnings en ons mislukkings. Dit is die hooftema van die album, maar dit handel oor baie verskillende dinge.  Dit gaan oor liefde, oor vriendskap, die toekoms, die verlede, die hede”, het Francois in ’n onlangse onderhoud gesê. “Ek dink die liedjies wat ek skryf is persoonlik en baie eerlik. Soms voel ek dit is selfgesentreerd, maar ek besef ook dat daardie die tipe liedjies is waarvan ek hou.  Ek hou van mense wat eerlik en persoonlik is. Ek vind aanklank daarby en dit is dus die soort liedjies wat ek wil skryf.”

Arno Carstens het al 12 albums vrygestel; vyf as hoofsanger van Springbok Nude Girls, een as lid van die Electronica projek, Bhelltower, en ses as solokunstenaar.  Meer as 20 van sy enkelsnitte het toptienstatus behaal en hy het al vyf SAMA toekennings ontvang, insluitend Beste Rock Album in 2004 vir Another Universe en Beste Kontemporêre Album in 2006 vir The Hello Goodbye Boys.  In September 2016 het Arno sy eerste Afrikaanse debuutalbum vrygestel en dit Die Aandblom 13 genoem om sy herkoms te vereer. Dertien snitte wat losweg werklikheidsgebaseerde verhale vertel van wie Arno is en waar hy vandaan kom (hy het op Worcester grootgeword by Aandblomstraat 13 en gaan kuier nog so gereeld moontlik daar).

Volgens Arno het die skryf van Die Aandblom 13 baie verskil van sy ervaring met die vervaardigingsproses van sy Engelse albums. “Afrikaans is natuurlik my moedertaal; ek kon dus die essensie van die taal verken en, as gevolg daarvan, het die liedjies uit gedigte ontwikkel en is die musiek later bygevoeg met hierdie album”, sê hy.  Toe die album eers voltooi is, het Arno teruggekeer na Aandblomstraat 13 om die kunswerk vir die album se omslag te fotografeer.  As jy dus noukeurig na die album se omslag kyk, sal jy ’n montage sien van die binnekant van die huis waar hy grootgeword het. Dit is voorwaar ’n kringloop-album!

Francois van Coke is the lead singer of Fokofpolisiekar and Van Coke Kartel. During his 13 year career as lead singer of these Afrikaans rock bands, he has released 9 full length albums, 3 EPs and collaborated with likes of Jack Parow, Die Antwoord, Die Heuwels Fantasties, Seether (Shaun Morgan) and Karen Zoid. He has received 4 SAMA awards and multiple other prolific awards.  After releasing the self-titled album Francois van Coke in 2015 to critical success, Francois van Coke returns with his second studio album Hierdie Is Die Lewe, which will be released on 2 February this year.

According to Francois, the album is about the human condition.  “Everything that happens between birth and death, our victories and our failures. That’s the main theme of the album, but it’s about a lot of stuff. It’s about love, it’s about friendship, it’s about the future, the past, the present,” Francois said in a recent interview.  “I think the songs that I write are personal and really honest. Sometimes I feel like it’s self-centered but I realised that those are the kinds of songs I like. I like guys that are honest and personal. I can relate to those kinds of songs, so those are the kinds of songs I want to write.”

Arno Carstens has released 12 albums; 5 as lead singer of Springbok Nude Girls, 1 as part of Electronica project Bhelltower and 6 as a solo artist.  He’s had over 20 top ten singles and won 5 SAMA Awards including Best Rock Album in 2004 for Another Universe and Best Adult Contemporary Album in 2006 for The Hello Goodbye Boys.  In September 2016, Arno released his debut Afrikaans album, and to honour his roots, called it Die Aandblom 13. Thirteen tracks that tell loosely fact based stories about who he is and where he’s come from; he grew up in Worcester at Aandblom Straat 13, and still goes there as often as possible.

According to Arno, writing Die Aandblom 13 was a very different experience to the process of making any of his previous English albums. “Afrikaans is obviously my mother tongue so I could really explore the essence of the language and as a result, with this album, the songs evolved from poetry, and the music was added afterwards,” he says.  Once the album was completed, Arno went back to Aandblom Straat 13 to photograph the album cover artwork, so look closely at the album sleeve and you will see a montage of the inside of the house where he grew up.  It’s truly a full circle album!

Rock legends Francois van Coke, Arno Carstens continue their partnership in a special concert in Carnival City’s Big Top Arena on Friday, 24 February.

In April 2015, Francois van Coke kicked off his solo career with a bang with the launch of his self-titled debut solo album. What followed can only be described as a year of unbounded success with numerous number ones, sold out shows, awards and shattered records left in its wake. A year later Francois released his fifth solo music video, featuring Arno Carstens – Ek Weet Nie. Due to public demand, these two rock legends continue their partnership with the rock event of the year in a special concert in Carnival City’s Big Top Arena on Friday, 24 February.

Francois van Coke is the lead singer of Fokofpolisiekar and Van Coke Kartel. During his 13-year career as lead singer of these Afrikaans rock bands, he has released 9 full length albums, 3 EPs and collaborated with likes of Jack Parow, Die Antwoord, Die Heuwels Fantasties, Seether (Shaun Morgan) and Karen Zoid. He has received 4 SAMA awards and multiple other prolific awards. After releasing the self-titled album Francois van Coke in 2015 to critical success, Francois van Coke returns with his second studio album Hierdie Is Die Lewe, which will be released on 2 February this year.

According to Francois, the album is about the human condition. “Everything that happens between birth and death, our victories and our failures. That’s the main theme of the album, but it’s about a lot of stuff. It’s about love, it’s about friendship, it’s about the future, the past, the present,” Francois said in a recent interview. “I think the songs that I write are personal and really honest. Sometimes I feel like it’s self-centred but I realised that those are the kinds of songs I like. I like guys that are honest and personal. I can relate to those kinds of songs, so those are the kinds of songs I want to write.”

Arno Carstens has released 12 albums; 5 as lead singer of Springbok Nude Girls, 1 as part of Electronica project Bhelltower and 6 as a solo artist. He’s had over 20 top ten singles and won 5 SAMA Awards including Best Rock Album in 2004 for Another Universe and Best Adult Contemporary Album in 2006 for The Hello Goodbye Boys. In September 2016, Arno released his debut Afrikaans album, and to honour his roots, called it Die Aandblom 13. Thirteen tracks that tell loosely fact based stories about who he is and where he’s come from; he grew up in Worcester at Aandblom Straat 13, and still goes there as often as possible.

According to Arno, writing Die Aandblom 13 was a very different experience to the process of making any of his previous English albums. “Afrikaans is obviously my mother tongue so I could really explore the essence of the language and as a result, with this album, the songs evolved from poetry, and the music was added afterwards,” he says. Once the album was completed, Arno went back to Aandblom Straat 13 to photograph the album cover artwork, so look closely at the album sleeve and you will see a montage of the inside of the house where he grew up. It’s truly a full circle album!
