Anyone thinking "Fake" won't be the first, and I can understand why, because that crashing fighter looks too good to be true.
Here are a couple of aviation photos from the 1920s by Alfred G. Buckham, one of London, the other of Lincoln, with what looks like the very same Imperial Airways "Argosy" airliner in, or added to, each.


However the crash photo is real.
Jim Meads submitted his photo negative to the Air Ministry as part of the crash investigation. When it was returned to him and he passed it on to the newspapers, he was paid (repeatedly) for publication. I'm pretty sure it was thoroughly checked and the Air Ministry consulted before he received any cash.

As for "how could the image be so sharp?" it was taken by a professional photographer using a press camera like this one, which produced 4" x 5" negatives bigger than a modern smartphone.

However getting these cameras ready was a slow process, so he would already have set a shutter speed and f-stop suitable for general photography in current light conditions without need to focus.
When things got lively in the air, all he had to do was point and click.

Of course even with a camera prepped and ready, there's also the Luck factor of being in the right place, looking in the right direction and clicking the button at the right time, a time which can be measured in fractions of a second.
A classic example of that are two photographs of Lee Harvey Oswald being shot by Jack Ruby, separated by 6/10 of a second.
One, by Jack Beers, was certainly dramatic...


...but it was the second, by Robert Jackson, which won a Pulitzer and became part of history. Apparently Beers suffered from depression about missing THE photograph for the rest of his life.

Here's another image of that Lightning crash, this one crisp enough to show extra details (arrowed by me). I can only imagine what a print from the original huge negative must have looked like.

It's likely that one detail in particular helped confirm the image as genuine.
AFAIK (subject to correction) the ejection seat guide rail - violently extended by an explosive cartridge - served two functions, (1) to punch the canopy out of the way before the main ejection charge fired...

...and (2) to ensure the pilot's ejection trajectory went well above the tail fin, which at supersonic speed would be lethal.

Ejection seats in slow test aircraft like the Gloster Meteor didn't use rails and, being twin-seaters, after an ejection test the pilot in the front seat would land the plane as usual. There were newsreel films and magazine photos of them, like this one.

The Lightning, however, was a single-seater and if its pilot had to use his ejection seat, the now-empty aircraft would crash. This means a civilian photographer - Mead's speciality throughout his life was rural field sports, not aviation - knowing about that seat rail and adding it to the pasted-in aircraft on a faked negative was highly unlikely.

...and after its unscheduled return to earth.

The red circle shows where test-pilot George Aird made his own return to earth among the tomatoes in that greenhouse. He had two broken legs because his parachute didn't completely open in time, but made a full recovery and resumed his flying career.
Without a Martin-Baker Mk 4 ejection seat, he'd have been under this instead...
