Whiplash (2014)
🥁🎼🤯
Written and directed by Damien Chazelle, this psychological drama film stars Miles Teller as Andrew Neiman and J.K. Simmons as Terence Fletcher in a story of how far one student is willing to go, under a tremendous amount of ambition by a ruthless teacher, to become the greatest jazz drummer of all time.
Other stars of the movie include: Paul Reiser as Andrew’s father Jim, Melissa Benoist as movie theater employee Nicole and Austin Stowell as fellow drummer Ryan Connolly.
Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons are a perfectly inspiring team. Teller strikes up the performance of a lifetime considering he is adept at staying tirelessly true to his craft just the same as his character. Simmons (whose gripping performance stands out from everything else) has this incredible ability to give speeches that are both moving and intimidating, which is exactly what Fletcher does to his pupil. The role even won J.K. Simmons multiple awards, including the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
Throughout the movie, the relationship between the two characters varies greatly from a chance encounter to a very unconventional method to keep jazz going.
Fletcher treats his students harshly because he pushes them beyond the level of expectation to see if they have what it takes to be a professional musician, hence Andrew has to play harder than he ever played and give up everything in his personal life (including his sanity) to focus on being the next Buddy Rich. Sometimes, after moments of relentless playing, his hands would bleed. But it represents Andrew putting in a lot of effort to earn his spot as Fletcher’s top student.
On that note, some real-life jazz players would only care about devoting themselves entirely to the joy and rhythm of the music. They’d even berate anyone they would see as secondary or unable to match their playing techniques. That’s why other than trying to impress Fletcher, Andrew wants to play like Buddy Rich since he idolizes him. Another comparison to Buddy Rich is Andrew can even play drums by memory over sheet music.
The soundtrack features both original jazz pieces and some classic jazz standards. They include “Caravan” by Duke Ellington and Hank Levy’s “Whiplash” from the Don Eliss album Soaring.
Finally, the memo is even if life sometimes leads down a grueling path, you will eventually succeed if you practice hard enough to get where you want to go. All that said, I recommend this intense, triumphant indie film to every fan of jazz music.

2019 & 2010s Best/Worst
Because I like lists and cataloguing the dumb shit I cared about. As my brother once said after seeing and reviewing NOW YOU SEE ME on a lazy Sunday, ‘Some would say it was a waste of time, others might say it was a colossal waste of time.’
I’ll admit, it’s a bit over-the-top. Particularly including the Pats, but yeah, in the Tom Brady era that started when I was 14 as a Freshman in high school to 33 years old now and wrapping up soon-ish (?), there’s not a chance in hell I’ll care as intimately about this shit. I grew up with it at just the right time.

What I think about Whiplash
Directed by Damien Chazelle
Starring Miles Teller as Andrew Neiman and J K Simmons as Terence Fletcher
Released in 2014
First and foremost, I should clarify Whiplash is one of my favourite films ever. Chazelle's masterful cinematography and writing, Teller and Simmons' chemistry in their performances, and of course the music (by Justin Hurwitz) make this a truly gripping experience and an example of a near-perfect film.
The film follows Andrew Neiman, a nineteen year old first year jazz drummer at Schaffer Conservatory, and his relationship with his psychotic conductor Terence Fletcher over a series of competitions.
The camera work in Whiplash is nothing short of sublime. Fixed angles and slow, controlled zooms and movements are used to build tension, and this technique works well with the subtle actions of the two leads to create a sort of uncomfortable illusion of safety. In stark contrast, handheld, rougher movements are used in moments of danger, the culmination of tension (think the tempo scene at around 25 minutes, or Andrew, Connolly and Tanner's competition for the part around an hour in). Another thing that stands out is the use of rack focus, admittedly a fairly common technique, but nonetheless one which is used exceptionally well here. They serve as a sort of visual semi-colon, focusing first on Andrew being dragged out of the hall in the background, then on a bloody cymbal in the foreground. The establishing shots being in time to the score, while again nothing new, serve their purpose appropriately and can be considered icing on the cake.
Andrew: "I wanna be great."
Nicole: "And you're not?"
Andrew: "I wanna be one of the greats."
The character of Andrew is a fascinating one, and is a role which Miles Teller's inherent douchiness (for lack of a better word - also, nothing at all against Miles Teller, but given his performances in the Divergent series (I know, I know) and War Dogs from a couple years ago give me the impression he plays the arrogant a-hole a little too well) brings a lot of life to. This is a young man who is clearly extremely driven, talented and hard-working, and one whose social failings (re. his brief relationship, lack of friends, etc.) are merely distractions on his desired path to greatness. Though he is undeniably self-centred, when we're seeing things through his eyes we still root for him. We sympathise enough to feel his pride, his embarassment, his triumph, but to mentally scream at him when he resorts to being extremely reckless (the rented car scene before the penultimate competition, or when he attacks Fletcher immediately afterwards). This, however, makes us all the more resentful of Fletcher, placing the audience in the shoes of Andrew's worried father.
Fletcher: "I was there to push people beyond what's expected of them. I believe that's an absolute necessity."
Fletcher himself is given some development and justification before the finale of the film, when he and Andrew converse over dinner. His drive to find his 'Charlie Parker', so to speak, matches Andrew's to be the next Charlie Parker. Despite being the de facto villain of the film, he is never 'defeated' as such - rather, after Andrew takes matters into his own hands in the finale, he gains Fletcher's approval, shown by silent close-ups of them smiling at each other. Therefore, it can be said that he is not defeated, but appeased to the benefit of Neiman.
The final broad praise I have for Whiplash is for Chazelle's writing. Conversations such as the one at Andrew's family dinner go a long way to give context to Andrew's perception and temperaments. A similar effect is achieved earlier in the film when Ryan Connolly, the core drummer Andrew has been filling in for (prior to being recruited by Fletcher) returns and has a short, nearly inaudible conversation with his bandmate about Neiman's poor playing, though the effect admittedly has less to do with the writing and more to do with the audio editing (for which this film won an Academy Award). And of course nobody should discuss the writing of the film without mentioning Fletcher's terrifying insults brought to life by J K Simmons' equally terrifying performance (for which he too won an Academy Award).
A few more things I love; the orange-gold colour pallette of the film reminds me of studio lights, and it briefly dips away when Andrew gets kicked out before returning as actual studio lights in the finale; the change in the attitude of Studio Band before and after Fletcher enters the room; the ending is the best of any movie I have ever seen.
Fletcher: "You think I'm fucking stupid? I know it was you."
All that said, there are a few things that irk me. Andrew sometimes makes some really goofy faces while playing which detracts from the tension of certain scenes. Many of Fletcher's insults seem to be played for comedy, again detracting from the tension (him screaming at Andrew in the tempo scene: good; him wearily insulting Andrew, Connelly, and Tanner in turn in their competition for the part: bad; him arguing with Andrew when he shows up late and forgets his sticks: good; and so on). There are some really cheesy lines of dialogue, like when Andrew asks Nicole out. Speaking of which, thier relationship is introduced and never developed, so we feel no real sadness when it ends; one could interpret this as mimicing Andrew being focused solely on drumming, but for me it never felt impactful, and rather more like a somewhat easy and unnecesary way to show Andrew is a prick because of his ambition. The bus breaking down is nothing more than a plot convenience. This next one isn't a flaw at all, rather a personal peeve: the final song of the movie isn't Whiplash.
Neverthess, Whiplash remains an expertly told story on ambition, greatness, and how much achieving it can cost. Its merits far outweigh its flaws, and I highly recommend it to absolutely anyone. I rate this film 9/10.

13 from the ask meme for Whiplash? (And especially "No Shortage of Blood," if applicable.)
13. Are there any things that might have happened in any of your stories, but you changed them at the last minute? (So-and-so dies, they don't actually kiss, main character has long extended ballet-based dream sequence, etc.)
The biggest one for No Shortage Of Blood is that Andrew was supposed to murder Ryan Connolly! I couldn’t go through with it, because I love that enormous lunk, but I’ve got another fic in the series where Ryan does intercept and effectively rescue Andrew, in a messy analogue to Desi “rescuing” Amy. He’s just not as much of a dick as that guy is, though, and I really don’t think there’s a same-gender equivalent to how pettily domineering Desi is toward Amy there -- Ryan’s not another Fletcher, he’s a backup Neiman, and it turned into just an interlude of Ryan Connolly trying wholeheartedly to assist someone whose genius revenge scheme left him genuinely in critical condition and really resentful of any and all attempts to help him. I clipped it as an episode from the main story because I couldn’t make it work, and as a side story it’s on a back burner until I figure out how to make it end in a satisfactory way.
There was also going to be more of Jim Neiman -- he’s seriously sad collateral damage in the scheme of what Andrew thinks will get him his own back, and he ultimately won’t understand Andrew’s decision to go back (after an event that, mastermind or not, could have killed him for real) or why what his son wants is so tangled up in stuff it seems like to Jim no reasonable person could possibly want. I couldn’t write him to my satisfaction, so he’s not quite there.
I also briefly but never really seriously entertained having Andrew do what Amy ultimately only amuses herself by considering, and die for real. I really don’t do a ton of last-minute changes, but there’s lots of what-might-have-been scenarios for any given fic by me.

WHIPLASH
Whiplash is a 2014 American drama film written and directed by Damien Chazelle. The film stars Miles Teller as Andrew Neiman, J. K. Simmons as Terence Fletcher, Paul Reiser as Jim Neiman and Melissa Benoist as Nicole. The film depicts the relationship between an ambitious jazz student (Andrew Neiman) and an aggressive, abusive instructor (Terence Fletcher) Andrew Neiman is a first-year jazz student at the prestigious Shaffer Conservatory in New York. He has been playing drums from a young age and aspires to become like Buddy Rich. While Andrew Neiman is practicing in the music room suddenly the famed conductor Terence Fletcher discovered him. The next day, Andrew enters one class aside from Fletcher and there, he meets the drummer named Ryan Connelly. Shortly, the professor arrives and the class performs "Billy's An". Andrew sees the man in silhouette looking at the door. After the class, Andrew peeks into one of the classrooms where the class is handled by Fletcher, and he is being looked at by Fletcher. Later back at the Studio Band, Andrew is playing drums as core drummer. Suddenly, Fletcher breaks inside and Andrew becomes horrified of him. Fletcher conducts every saxophonist and bassist one by one and finally the drums. After that, Fletcher tells Andrew to come and he is told to come at his room tomorrow at 6 in the morning as the alternate for core drummer Carl Tanner. Fletcher is strict and abusive toward his students, mocking and insulting them; when the band rehearses the Hank Levy piece "Whiplash" and Andrew struggles to keep the tempo, Fletcher hurls a chair at him, slaps him and berates him in front of the class. At a jazz competition, Andrew misplaces Carl's sheet music. Since Carl cannot play without it, Andrew steps in, telling Fletcher that he can perform "Whiplash" from memory. After a successful performance, Fletcher promotes him to core drummer. Soon after, Fletcher recruits Ryan Connolly, the core drummer from Andrew's former lower-level class. Andrew believes Connolly is the less proficient drummer and is infuriated when Fletcher promotes him to core. Determined to impress Fletcher, Andrew practices until his hands bleed and breaks up with his new girlfriend Nicole, believing she will hold him back. He endures a gruelling 2 A.M. tryout session with Fletcher and the other drummers in the class, in which Fletcher kicks furniture and screams at him, and earns back the core spot.On the way to another competition, Andrew's bus breaks down. He rents a car but arrives late and realizes he left his drumsticks at the rental office. After a dressing-down from Fletcher, Andrew races back to the rental office to retrieve the drumsticks, but his car is broadsided. He crawls from the wreckage, runs back to the theater and arrives on stage bloody and injured. When he struggles to play "Caravan" due to his injuries, Fletcher halts the performance to tell Andrew he is "done". Enraged, Andrew attacks Fletcher in front of the audience and is dismissed from Shaffer Conservatory. At his father's request, Andrew meets a lawyer representing the parents of Sean Casey, a former student of Fletcher's. Contrary to Fletcher's previous claim that Sean had died in a car accident, the lawyer explains that Sean committed suicide, having suffered anxiety and depression during and after his time as Fletcher's student. Sean's parents want to prevent Fletcher from teaching again. Andrew agrees to testify on the condition of anonymity and Fletcher is fired.Months later, Andrew has abandoned drumming and is working in a restaurant while applying to different colleges. He discovers Fletcher performing at a jazz club. After the performance, Fletcher invites Andrew to drink with him. He explains that he pushed his students beyond the expected so that they might achieve success and become like Louis Armstrong or Charlie Parker. Andrew accepts Fletcher's invitation to replace the current drummer in his new band at the upcomingJVC Jazz Festival. He invites Nicole to the performance, but she is in a new relationship. On stage, just before the performance begins, Fletcher reveals that he knows Andrew testified against him and leads the band with a piece Andrew does not know as revenge. Andrew leaves the stage humiliated as a result, and his father meets him backstage. However, instead of going home, he returns to the drum kit, begins playing "Caravan" and cues the band. As the piece ends and the lights go down, Andrew continues his own solo. Fletcher is taken aback but begins to guide Andrew. As the solo ends they share a smile and Fletcher cues the finale

Guide Questions
1. What life lesson can be learned from the movie?
The life lesson can be learned from the movie is whatever it takes don't give up with your dream. Like what Andrew did he is determined to pursue his dream because that makes him happy.
2. What part of the story told by the movie was the most powerful? Why?
The part of the story told by the movie was the powerful is when Andrew drums until his hand gets bleed just to prove to Fletcher that he's the one who can play the Caravan on the competition.
3. Who was your favorite character in the movie ? Why ?
My favorite character is the father of Andrew because he is a cool dad. He always support Andrew specially when Andrew humiliated at the stage then his father meets him backstage then hug him. I got emotional to that scene actually because we only count who parents are like that who supports their children.

So to tell you all, when i think about what technology or gadget is my favorite or what i like the most , the first thing that comes to my mind is a Cell Phone. Why cellphone? Well I choose cellphone because cellphone have a lot of features that can benefit us. Having a cell phone can help in emergency situations. Types of emergencies can range from tornadoes to car breakdowns to hurricanes. If you want a cell phone only for emergencies, purchasing a pre-paid cell phone would be the way to go.And also the ability to communicate is important in today's mobile society. One communication option is a cellular phone. Having a cellular phone, also known as cell phone. You can communicate with your love ones abroad using your cell phone. And also there are cellphones that have cameras. You cant take picture, selfies together with your family and friends. And record your memories together. Thats why its good to have a cellphone especially in emergency times.

SHORT TERM 12
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Grace is the young supervisor of Short Term 12, a group home for troubled teenagers. She lives with her long-term boyfriend and coworker, Mason, but finds it difficult to open up to him emotionally. When Grace finds out she is pregnant, she schedules an appointment for an abortion; she eventually tells an overjoyed Mason about the pregnancy, but not about her plan to have an abortion. At the facility, Grace and Mason focus their efforts on Marcus, a Short Term 12 resident who is about to turn 18 and is struggling with the prospect of leaving the facility. Grace bonds with Jayden, a recent arrival at Short Term 12 who has a history of self-harm. Jayden distances herself from the other teenagers as she does not intend to stay at the facility for long, and when her father fails to pick her up on her birthday, she reacts violently towards the staff. After her outburst, she sits in the "cool-down room" with Grace, who shows Jayden her own scars from cutting herself. That night, Jayden leaves the facility in the middle of her birthday celebrations and, unable to force her to return, Grace follows Jayden to her father's house. After finding the house empty, they return to Short Term 12. When Jayden reads Grace a cryptic story she has written, Grace begins to suspect that Jayden was abused by her father. At a party hosted by Mason's foster parents, he proposes to Grace, who accepts. The following morning, Grace is upset by a phone call that reveals her father is being released from prison, and refuses to be consoled by Mason. She arrives at Short Term 12 to discover that Jayden has been picked up by her father overnight. She is angry at the decision to send Jayden back to her father, but her boss maintains that Jayden denied that she was abused by him. Later that day, Grace finds that Marcus has attempted to commit suicide after the death of his fish. While waiting at the hospital as Marcus is being treated, Grace breaks down and Mason becomes upset with her for refusing to talk to him about how she feels; instead, she tells him that she no longer wants to marry him and that she plans to have an abortion. Upset, she returns to Jayden's father's house and breaks in, intending to injure him while he sleeps, but she is interrupted by Jayden, who suggests that they smash his car instead. Grace opens up to Jayden about being sexually abused by her own father, and after Jayden shows Grace bruises from where her father hit her they return together to Short Term 12, where Jayden reports her father for physical abuse. Grace goes home to apologize to Mason, who tells her that Marcus will recover. Several weeks later, Grace starts seeing a therapist and she is shown viewing a sonogram with Mason. Mason tells the rest of the staff about running into Marcus, who is doing well and has a girlfriend.
Guide Questions:
1. What life lessons learned from the movie? - I learned from the movie is a open-hearted, quietly emotional look at the staff and residents of a foster-care facility for at-risk kids, based on the time Cretton himself spent as a counselor in a similar institution. 2.
