Poor boy has to come up with and excuse quickly and that's how it came out
In this AU, everyone in the group know that Kenta has a roommate, but nobody knows WHO it is. They all think Ryuga is dead so that's the last person they would think about.
Eventually the secret is bound to be revealed, cause it wouldn't be fun otherwise.

I have an answer for this
At the end of the episode where the phoenix reveal happens doji is ranting and raving about Ryo Hagane when Ryuga comes back
So ryuga does know Ryo is alive and that Doji got his ass kicked by him
EDIT: THAT ALL BEING SAID
Ryuga was semi possessed at the time so there is a chance he could not remember
The question I sometimes think about: is Ryuga even aware that Ryo is alive, considering that after those events in a Koma, they (as i remember) did not directly intersect
