The 4th of July is right around the corner. Of all the holidays, this is the one we celebrate as a nation, and it’s a big deal. It’s truly all about the Americana, the baseball, hotdogs, apple pie…and Colachup.
Say whaaaat?
I realize this sounds like it may have been published by The Onion, or maybe is a display at Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, but no. And—fasten your safety belt—it is made by Pepsi. Yup. Say hello to Pepsi Colachup.
But you better do it fast, because while the idea of a wild ketchup sounds pretty hot dog-worthy, it’s only going to be available on the 4th of July, and only at four baseball stadiums scattered around the country.
In other words, much ado about almost nothing, because the vast majority of us—read all USAmericans except for maybe about 125,000—will even have a shot at trying it. But boy, their PR team sure must have burned the midnight oil setting up photoshoots and writing press releases.
The verbiage is exquisite, reflecting this condiment was created with the Culinary Institute of America. It starts with a Pepsi reduction. See. I told you so. How many run of the mill products start with a reduction of anything other than highly pulverized and processed vegetables? Be sure to use the word “infused,” and you’ve got a gourmet product here, from the smoked tomatoes to the four spices, onions, and—of course—ketchup. The result is a “sweet, citrusy taste.”

While I understand the urge to introduce summer promotional products, as we have discussed before, I don’t understand why such a great effort was put into something that may never see the light of day again. I visualize men and women in lab coats juggling beakers and other equipment as they seek to find the right blend.
And it also reminds me of the Breaking Bad episode (S5E2) in which food scientists in the German laboratory are concocting new sauces, and came up with Franch. You guessed it. French, meet Ranch. I suspect the writers were taking a polite jab at food manufacturers who always seem to be drifting off into the weeds in pursuit of something new.
Pepsi views this as just another of its concerted efforts to try to whittle away at Coca-Cola’s dominance in beverages. For the life of me, though, this is an expensive stunt that will get its 15 minutes of fame, and then be forgotten. Besides, I can’t see Pepsi ever marketing a condiment in the first place, because that category is already filled. On the other hand, if they wanted to do a collab with Heinz, that might work, because Heinz already owns the majority of the condiment aisle.
Meanwhile as you are enjoying your 4th of July cookout, you can dream of what this product tastes like, and that’s about it. You can relish—pun intended—that you heard about it in your MBA Marketing class, but that’s it. Sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction.
And for all of us not going to one of those baseball games on the 4th, ketchup is ketchup, mustard is mustard. Shut up and eat your hot dog.
