Hutatma Review
Tumblr media
July 13, 2019
by Inakshi Chandra-Mohanty
In South Mumbai, in the district of Fort, is a square officially named Hutatma Chowk, which houses the famous Flora Fountain and a statue of a martyr with a flame that stands right beside it. The square was earlier known by the name Flora Fountain, as that monument was an integral part of that area, but was changed to Hutatma Chowk, translated as Martyr’s Square, in 1961, five years after hundreds of members of the Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti were injured and lost their lives, as the police opened fire on their peaceful demonstration. For those that don’t know much about the history of Maharashtra, this organization was composed of Marathi commoners that were against Bombay becoming a city state like Delhi and advocated for a separate Marathi-speaking state that included Bombay. This is the setting for the new Zee5 web series, Hutatma, which is based off of a Marathi novel of the same name, written by Meena Deshpande. Though the setting is real, the characters are fictional. It begins with the bloody shootout that took lives of many and chronicles the journey of one young woman, Vidyut Sawant (Anjali Patil), who gets involved in the politics of “United Maharashtra” after her father is killed in the protest at the fountain, on his way home from work.
From a technical standpoint, the show is fantastic in its production value. It is not easy to recreate India in the 1950s. However, the makers of Hutatma have been very careful in each detail, from the costumes to the set design. The cinematography is brilliant, especially when it comes to portraying Vidyut on screen. The way in which the camera lingers on her even as other characters in the scene are speaking, allows the audience to see her reaction, exposing us to the many different layers of her character.
The first season primarily deals with Vidyut’s internal issues and vulnerabilities as she attempts to come to terms with her father’s death and wanders across the various groups in the hope that one of them will be suitable for her goals. She is naïve and young, and makes many mistakes in her quest for justice. By the second season, she is firm in her path and has transitioned from a lost, grief-stricken girl, into a manipulative and determined woman that will go to any extent to avenge her father’s death even if that means making enemies of people who were once her friends. Anjlai Patil breathes life into this character. The way she portrays the layers and complexities of this character is remarkable. Her role is reminiscent of a character, Durga, that she had played in the 2013 film, Naa Bangaaru Talli. Though the situations and forces around her are different, both Vidyut and Durga go through a similar journey of an innocent girl pushed into a dark world.
The writing and direction of the first season are concise and gripping. Though the focus is primarily on Vidyut’s journey, the show introduces many other characters to establish the nature of the movement, and display the different facets to the struggle. It is heavily biased towards the Marathi people, and most of the narrative is told from their perspective. However, it doesn’t show them purely as victims and heroes. There are people like Malini Tai (Ashwini Kalsekar) and Bhimabai (Chhaya Kadam) who believe in non-violent, peaceful protests. There are those like Abhay (Vaibhav Tatwawaadi) and his communist group, who use violence for their means but only to the extent of scaring the government, not hurting any one of them. And there are those like Guru (Nitin Bhajan), who use bombs and guns and will go to any extent to achieve their goals, even if it means attempting to kill the Prime Minister.  While the audience is made sympathetic towards all these characters, especially since there are very few non-Marathi characters in the show, they are also exposed to the flaws that make these characters human.
In the second season, the writing is weaker. Since the characters have already been established, this season has to develop the character arcs. However, except for Vidyut and Abhay, the remaining characters are given less importance, and the new characters that are introduced are not as interesting as the characters from the first season. Therefore, though the plot still remains intriguing, there are many scenes, especially the ones that don’t have Vidyut or Abhay, that lag. There are also many loopholes in the story towards the end of the season, such as Leela’s motivations, or how certain characters knew secrets that they shouldn’t have known. Hopefully, a third season will shed some light on these plot points.
Despite the flaws in the storytelling of the second season, Hutatma is still one of the best web series to come out of India. Filled with tremendous performances, and an exciting storyline, not only is it extremely engaging, but it is also informative for those that don’t have much knowledge of the United Maharashtra movement in 1950s India.

A Maharashtra Minister's Message To The State
Tumblr media
This week, we celebrate 60 years of the formation of the state of Maharashtra. I extend my best wishes to every Maharashtrian and my deepest gratitude to everyone who is bravely battling for us against COVID-19.Maharashtra Divas is celebrated with pride and celebration across Marathi households. Together, we remember the struggles of our united past and rejoice in the establishment of our shared legacy through language, culture and statehood. As we step into the 60th year of our glorious state in these difficult and dark times, it is important to introspect and remember where we come from, where we are and the goal towards which are we marching.Maharashtra has always been a base for social reformists, thinkers, intellectuals and activists. In Medieval India, reform was ushered in the field of devotion through Bhakti Marg and Varkari Sampraday. Saints like Dnyaneshwar, Namdev, Tukaram propagated the philosophy of equality in spirituality. The principles of religious tolerance and women empowerment cemented by visionary warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj laid the ground for the progressive mindset which proved to be the basis for several major social reforms in the 18th and 19th century. In the late 19th century, egalitarian reforms in Maharashtra had three distinct veins: Women's education and empowerment, Mahatma Phule's anti-caste, truth-seeking society and the organizational endeavors initiated by Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar for the education and rights of the underprivileged.Maharashtra was a frontrunner in India's war for independence, producing countless freedom fighters, moderates and radicals alike. After independence, the road ahead for the Maharashtrian people would be full of further struggle, protests and patience. The concept of a separate state for Marathi-speaking people had been established since the idea of Swaraj by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the 17th century. However, after independence, it was only in 1956 that the Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti was formed under the aegis of Keshavrao Jedhe in Pune. Prominent activists like Atre, Prabodhankar Thackeray, Senapati Bapat and Shahir Amar Shaikh and many others made invaluable contributions to the state we call home today. It was Shri Yashwantrao Chavan Saheb, the first Chief Minister of Maharashtra, who led us and our newly-formed state into the bright future. An ingenious and intuitive leader, Chavan Saheb was more than a political leader, he was the voice of the common people in the state and a true statesman! He guided our state to greatness with planning in the fields of agriculture, water resources, small-scale industries and panchayat raj. His values and principles firmly established Maharashtra on progressive and rational lines. Even with the victory of state formation, challenges kept erupting. Among them were the Muslim Satyashodhak Samaj led by Hamid Dalwai, Baba Adhav's' Ek Gaav-Ek Panavatha' movement, the Yuvak Kranti Dal and the Dalit Panther protests. Aggressive language and satyagrahi actions were the hallmarks of these movements. Baba Amte's Anandvan emerged as a training center for socialist activists. Post-emergency, our state was once again gifted with a 38-year old Chief Minister in Padma Vibhushan Sharadchandraji Pawar, a true visionary, as subsequent decades would prove multiple times. Padma Vibhushan Sharadchandraji Pawar's immense intuition, insight and intelligence saw the state excel rapidly in agriculture and industries. He reiterated values of welfare, promoting social equality and equity.Post emergency, a lull was evident in youth movements in Maharashtra and in the following decade, the women's liberation movement gained momentum. Maharashtra had been the pioneer in championing the cause of women's education and emancipation. Journals like 'Baija' and 'Stree' became the mouthpieces of women's liberation in the 1980s. Various women and public organizations were formed and took the cause forward. These organizations met the various demands of women's health, hygiene, livelihood, protection, including those of abandoned and verbally divorced women. This led to the enactment of new laws to protect women against domestic violence, female foeticide, and sexual harassment in the workplace. Maharashtra was the first state in India to enact 30% reservation for women in local bodies under the leadership of Shri Sharad Pawar, and with his untiring efforts over the years, it is now 50%.Many would say that in the last decade, the legacy of social change within Maharashtra has slowed down. It is true that in the last 10 years, many movements for social equality and social progress have reached a dormant stage in this progressive state. We have excelled in various domains of social justice, education, health, local governance, infrastructure and economic development over the last 60 years, and a still greater course is yet to be covered. Any kind of social numbness which seems to be pervasive should be shunned since our beloved state is in an uphill battle in many fronts, especially today. We face two great threats which cannot be seen. On one hand, an attack on our heath and livelihood by COVID-19 and on the other, an attack on our personal freedom by the pangs of communalism.A defining characteristic of Maharashtra has been that of secularism. Practiced and propagated by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, secularism found its roots in Maharashtrian society early, and has inspired the formation and flow of our present society. We have been a people of various faiths who have survived together to live freely together. Against the several ugly communal onslaughts taking place in the country, Maharashtra was the first state to break age-old political barriers, to unite to defend the age-old Maharashtrian spirit of secularism. The Maha Vikaas Aghadi has been a role model for every secular force around the world. Under the very capable administration of Shri Uddhav Thackeray, we have the opportunity to carry on the progressive principles of Maharashtra. It is in our history to struggle and emerge victorious.Today as we fight, as the worst hit state in India, in the war against COVID 19, we must keep hope. Maharashtra has been plagued by many natural and unnatural disasters through time and we have survived. The government is working every minute and every hour only for the protection and welfare of the people, but it is the people whose mental strength is the most vital at this hour.(Jayant Patil is the Maharashtra Cabinet Minister for Water Resources)Disclaimer: The opinions expressed within this article are the personal opinions of the author.
<영문>
11.12.2017 Shri Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group of companies,
Through Shri Rajeev Dubey.
Dear Sir,
We are writing to you on behalf of the Maharashtra Rajya Kamgar Sangathana Samyukta Kruti Samiti which is a joint action committee of many trade unions in Maharashtra. A meeting was held on 7th December for discussions with the delegation of South Korean workers from the Ssanyong Motor works plant who are visiting Mumbai.
At the outset, we express our appreciation for the positive steps taken in the long standing dispute, and the reinstatement of 37 workers by mutual discussions.
We understand that a tripartite understanding has also been arrived at which provided for the phased reinstatement of all the workers subject to requirement. According to the visiting workers, the Tivoli project is continuing to doing extremely well in recent months. Many workers in the Ssanyong plant are working 12 hrs a day on overtime. This would indicate that there is a requirement.
According to reports, financially too, turnover and profits have improved in 2017, largely due to the success of Tivoli. The circumstances for a win-win situation appear to be in place.
On the other hand, the condition of the approximately 130 families of workers who are still not employed is extremely precarious and increasingly desperate. Recently, there has been one more suicide. Keeping this in mind, various governmental elected representatives and civil society organizations have appealed for resolution of the issue. All sections of Korean society have supported the workers and appealed for expediting the resolution of the issue. We request you to take positive steps to implement your earlier assurance expeditiously, preferably in a definite time bound manner. This step will undoubtedly not only build enormous goodwill for Mahindra in S. Korea, but also contribute to strengthening Indo-Korean relations.
We request you to give an early appointment for a meeting between the senior Mahindra management asso
