@findingpaola • • • • • • I used to say that my work is for my daughters. And my self portraits are for me. I love the sense of freedom, beauty, and vulnerability they fill me with. When I got the idea to snap these, I had to ask myself, “Why?” Asking myself about my own intentions always keep me in check because I can be honest with myself. Sometimes I have a long answer and other times the response is simply, “Why not?” And sometimes, that’s enough for me to proceed. For this particular set, I wanted to feel vulnerable and uncomfortable. But I also wanted to capture “beauty” in the way I love it best. In simple, everyday rituals. ⠀ ⠀ I’ve always said that I’d be the mother of daughters before I had children. I kind of imagine my life’s work would be always be dedicated to uplifting women in my own way and because of that work, I’d be rewarded with many daughters. And now I have a son on the way... ⠀ ⠀ One of my goals to teach him to respect all women, but also that he understands and nurtures the beauty and value of the black woman in today’s world. Not just beauty in the physical sense because that’s just the icing on the cake. Son, we’ve got a lot to learn together.
