this article about a lawyer and apparently known and respected amateur ecologist tracking down the habitat and proving the continued existence of a particular fish species was very enjoyable (i love any stories where a hobbyist gets to make a genuine contribution to the field) and also taught me about the existence of iEcology, in which researchers do shit like track migration patterns of marine species based on sightings in social media posts, which is soooooooo neat

#my secondary freelance gig involves writing practice SAT verbal content for a test prep company #which is a much better job than it was 8 years ago bc now i can do it in my PJs and make three times as much :)#under those conditions it turns out it's actually not so bad! :)#also the SAT is changing probably partly to become easier to develop tests for it #which is honestly not great for the SAT. but is nice for me #anyway. it involves a lot of scouring the internet for Cool Finds i can make questions about #because the content of the SAT is shifting from like #serious articles written for publications intended for educated laypeople #to 'neato finds'#again. kind of a grim commentary on the state of american education. but nice for me.#but i decided it would be nice to have a record of like #some of the nicer stuff this brings me into contact with #that i never in a million years would have come across on my own bc i don't read science content unless i'm getting paid #work finds
