After years of trying to write this into a fic, I decided to just be unconventional and do it like this for the Summer SPOPtacular prompt: Roasting Marshmallows

Bow's marshmallow is perfectly toasted because he patiently rotated it for a nice even browning 

Catra's is on fire on purpose because she loves the instant gratification and contrast of char and sweet

Adora's is on fire accidentally because she tried to prove that she could make a perfectly toasted one much faster and efficiently than Bow could and tragedy ensued 

Glimmer's marshmallow no longer resembles a marshmallow or even food because she tried to use magic out of impatient competitive spite and it went horribly wrong 

Then I got bored of drawing hands but here are some more as supplied by the local children of my acquaintance... 

Mermista is roasting de-hydrated cereal marshmallows she has re-hydrated just to flex

Sea Hawk is at the hospital because he set his marshmallow on fire and then ate it that way 

Entrapta is just eating handfuls of mini marshmallows and encouraging the others to experiment so she can note the results (see: Sea Hawk)

Hordak isn't interested in eating marshmallows, but is taking particular joy in finding optimal sticks for the others to use 

Perfuma is using the fire to make everyone a soothing pot of althaea officinalis (Marshmallow) Root Tea because she doesn't approve of the corn syrup in artificial marshmallows

Scorpia is happily scarfing down the homemade, corn syrup free marshmallows Perfuma made that are suspiciously pre-burnt (but she doesn't mind)

Forsta tried freezing her marshmallows and nearly cracked a tooth when she bit into one

Lonnie keeps trying to get the perfect roast and getting impatient and just eating them raw

Kyle's marshmallow ended up in the coals 

Rogelio's marshmallow is a hot dog 

Huntara's marshmallow is a horrifying giant bug thing she killed that has Micah salivating with envy 

Wrong Hordak is roasting Peeps (no one knows where he even got them from)

It’s almost as if Catra is trying to play into the fawn trauma response with shadow weaver and Hordak in the later seasons. While Adora is framed as “the good kid” it’s Catra who abides by the horde and their strict policy for disobedience because it’s often how the neglected child acts when they are paired with another one when they grow up together. Even if Catra isn’t seen as competent as a fighter as adora, she desperately tries to win Shadow Weavers attention and get her praise even if it means going against the girl she loves and her morals she can’t understand. I find it a little weird that Adora just accepts her new life with Bow and Glimmer without much internal struggle in episode two. It’s been her destiny to be the chosen one and the golden child so obviously she is going to take this to the extreme and run with it? Catra? She doesn’t know where she stands with her own talents so she turns to her abuser to gain validation. Op is right as well as everyone else. It’s so baffling that she ra has taught me more about domestic abuse than other forms of media. It really shows how ahead of its time it was.

the first two episodes of She-ra are still so fascinating to me because we're presented with these two characters, Adora and Catra, and from design alone, you can tell Catra's the more rebellious one: with the lack of Horde red on her clothes, ripped leggings, and spiky hair; contrasting Adora's zipped up, clean cut red jacket and practical ponytail. The first scenes show us Adora diligently preparing for the day and arriving on time for training, and Catra showing up partway through, seemingly slacking off, and using an underhanded tactic to secure victory. Catra jokes around and Adora joins in, but Adora straightens up and salutes the second Shadow Weaver appears. Catra slowly assumes attention, then falls back into a forced relaxed position, notably neglecting to salute. Throughout the episode, we see Adora is deferent, always toeing the line, where Catra is "disrespectful" and clearly disregards and resents authority. Yet, Adora is the one to defect.

Though we know Adora is the main character and must become She-ra and join the good guys™, it's still somewhat of a subversion of expectations. It drew in my attention immediately. What reason would Catra, who seemingly dislikes the Horde and is mistreated by Shadow Weaver, have to stay? How could Adora, who previously seemed so dedicated to serving the Horde with all of her being, leave so easily? It's such a good set up for the series
