how can i convey my feelings for the whipping scene in Prisioneros de la tierra(1939). This is one of the most empowering worker uprising shots in cinema history, but it’s not optimistic in the least, there’s no hope presented after the rebellion, but that doesn’t make the act depicted any less just. There’s no backpatting or sense of national pride either by the film makers, it talks to me of an endless struggle by the exploited workers and the guaraní people. One battle was won, but the outcome will be the endless struggle between classes/races. The scene stands in absolute contrast to the melodrama aesthetic of the rest of the film. There are no easy conclusions to draw from this scene
