NEWMEN #4

We get another two-part story beginning in this issue. This was unusual for the era when single-issue stories were the norm in most comics. Pasttime has joined the team, he's now living with the rest and has a fancy new costume. Out in the woods some mysterious red and purple monster, possibly an alien, calling itself IKONN is on a rampage. Reign was out on a jog when he encounters Ikonn, who then tries to kill him. In desperation, Reign sends out a telepathic distress call to his teammates. Marc Silvetri's character RIPCLAW, from his team CYBERFORCE, shows up, saying he was "drawn to the pacific northwest by a mystical disturbance", and he begins fighting Ikonn. When the rest of the Newmen arrive, they see Ripclaw and assume he's the danger, and start fighting him. Eventually, they realize their mistake, and the Newmen and Ripclaw prepare to fight Ikonn together.

It's basically the plot of Newmen #2 again, the team fighting some big villain but ending in the middle of the fight. We get a new team member, when the current team members were still woefully undeveloped, and we don't learn much about him either, other than the fact that he's British and used to be in Her Majesty's Secret Service, which seems like a major backstory to explore. Plus, does that mean he's an adult, unlike the others? And why was Girth sent to kill him, what's he wanted for? Don't know. And Proctor, the team's mentor, doesn't even appear in this issue. But we do get Ripclaw, who was basically a Wolverine clone, and like how Marvel often used Wolverine to make random appearances in other titles for publicity, Ripclaw's appearance in this issue feels completely unnecessary. But there's lots of action for Jeff Matsuda to draw.

rosemary had only found the secret sight recently but she came almost everyday to calm her thoughts whenever she finished errands sent by the church.

This one was inspired by my recent studies of Brian Haberlin’s work - while it isn’t quite where I wanted it to be, it was a good piece to play around with some of his techniques. I think I missed on his colour palette (but I wasn’t really trying to emulate it exactly. It was a really fun piece to work on though!
