Welcome to the Castle of the Crystal, the Lords will see you now... All props completed for The Great Con-Junction, this was three solid weeks of work around my day job and my work with my horses. Who needs sleep?! I loved every aspect of this build; I've had so much fun playing with materials, putting stuff together from scratch and bits I had to hand, finding shapes and forms that suit the world of The Dark Crystal, and the reaction from everyone on the day made it even more worthwhile. If you counted individual props there were over 40 items, not including the feathers and the fabric sourced to cover the tables (more on those later). Delicious Gelfling, in a photo collage. When I'm working on props I forget how much they change from their first stage to their last. I have a photo somewhere of the pile of fabric I used for Red XIII and it baffles me that he was ever not a fully made monster costume. What was their original purpose that the Skeksis then usurped by putting Gelfling in them? It wouldn't be The Dark Crystal without a spoon - shown with the finished pumpkin. The spoon is actually a salad sever; I filled in the gap with some foam. The spoon is ANOTHER item that I think went missing at the event! Skeksis food! Including some weird eggs in husks, and almost a dozen crawlies. Interestingly, 4 or 5 of the Crawlies went missing at the Banquet, as did one of the husked eggs, and a couple of the brightly coloured ones. I genuinely do NOT mind that this happened given I gave out the rest of them anyway, I'm very amused that people liked the little critters enough to adopt them. Or save them from the Skeksis. At least one Fizzgig had a go chewing on these. Closer detail of the finished props, with the Crawlies escaping (naturally, nobody wants to be dessert) and getting into everywhere. I particularly love the patina on the big chunky ceramic bottle. Here's an example of the colours I opted for on most of the 'metal' props: greens, purples, and bronzes, which were painted over with silvers or golds. This gave them a really old, ugly, and 'cared for but not maintained' look as if layer on layer of expensive lacquer or polish has been set into each item, augmentations as the Skeksis wrangle for social power with each other. A couple of the plain wooden boxes went on to be Skeksis trinket boxes. I wanted to make these into cutlery set holders - ran out of time to do that. I've taken some liberties with the Skeksis script/text and almost all these pieces have some kind of angular scrawl on them - if it doesn't make sense, it doesn't have to. These items which were originally made by Gelflings to Skeksis orders would have been maintained or re-made by drained Podlings, who would be unlikely to know which way is up let alone another alphabet. Need a generic wiggly 'critter' to fill space? I grabbed some of these squishy light-up balls with tendrils all over them. They look *weird* and their neon colours contrasted all the tarnished metals and worn-in purples of the other props.
