An illustration of SMT IV Apocalypse X Ben 10 Alien Force with Nanashi as this world's Ben, Demons are now Aliens.
Redesigned are made to the characters to match the Alien Force Ben 10 series.
Two versions of the same image due to Hallelujah's original skin tone was yellow with a color picker, so I did a tanned skin tone on the left and the original skin tone on the right side.

It's funny that Chernobog became so popular, it is even in smite ffs. Honestly i understand that it is one of those demons that should retire from smt but i find his design so good
It is unlikely that Chernobog is going anywhere anytime soon, as he’s ingrained in pop culture works. And in SMT he’s far behind in a queue of illegitimates that includes Stonka, Forbi, Pabilsag reworked into Girtablilu, etc...

Do you know why Ophanim's design is identical to a Cherub? As far as I know it should have been drawn as a wheel full of eyes. If i'm correct, SMT's design should be Type III or Type IV, no?
First, thanks for using our design types. :) If you have no idea what these mean, check out this article!
This is kinda blowing my mind, though. You’re right, obviously. But then I was thinking if there are any other demons that have a case of mistaken identity but otherwise an okay design. Sure enough, there’s Pabilsag.

Just like an Ophan isn’t a Cherub, Pabilsag isn’t a Girtablilu. But rename both of them and they’ll be fine.
But for the record, I declared Ophan a Type II design while Pabilsag is Type IV. The difference is that we know Kaneko’s entire intent for Pabilsag:
Pabilsag, for example, is a fusion between man and scorpion.
Kaneko: He’s from Sumer, I believe. I think he was one of the ten warriors Tiamat created. No one can say whether he was a scorpion man, though. I guess I just wanted to make him one. Scorpion men really have this strong Kamen Rider air, don’t they? It resembles Nirasawa’s style a bit… all right, I just wanted to draw him that way to be honest.

Kaneko just wanted to draw a scorpion man. To be honest I never considered this with the above rationale that it’s still an okay scorpion guardian even if it intentionally doesn’t match Pabilsag.
There exists also indirect Kaneko commentary about Ophan, in that it and Metatron are designed with space battleships in mind. The vintage SMT2 demon encyclopedia entry for Ophan also describes it as having Cherub’s fourfold features, so genuine error might actually be behind the design; also in its defense, essentially an evolution of the design was corrected to Cherub in Devil Summoner. The description in Kaneko Works 2 is updated and refers to the galgalim, so they realized this mistake fairly quickly, it seems.
Our assessments definitely aren’t infallible, though. Like, SMT1 “Slimer” Abaddon is just a hellmouth; this makes the claim that he’s a Type III “original form” kind of dubious.
Tumblr media
He’s just one of these with the Slimer features, so that’d make him Type II.
For the moment, I’m going to leave them as-is--because I’d have to change the tallies, plus every time I edit the Odin article, or anything else on Blogger, the formatting inevitably screws up. Mostly laziness, though. But if there’s another example like Ophan or Pabilsag where it’s the right design to the wrong demon, they might need their own category.

Why is Pablsag a Scorpion-Man in SMT media? The only description I can find of him is "The Greek Sagitarius' Centaur is based on the God Pabilsag" so I... guess/would think he's also kind of a centaur? Or maybe he's an archer or have a horse, something like that. Where does the scorpion part comes from?
We know this one now. Kaneko was just ripping off Yasushi Nirasawa’s designs:

Scorpion men really have this strong Kamen Rider air, don’t they? It resembles Nirasawa’s style a bit… all right, I just wanted to draw him that way to be honest. There are people who love cyborgs, right? This type of combination has a certain aesthetic. That is why, as I just said, I love Nirasawa’s creature modelling.

This makes Pabilsag the first of the tokusatsu guest demons. It’s all Kaneko’s fault yet again!
